A simple solution method is used for preparation of single-crystal 1D nanostructure of [2-(p-dimehtyl-amniophenyl)ethenyl]-phenyl-methylene-propanedinitrile (DAPMP). The method used the directional supramolecular interaction induced by strong donor-acceptor dipole-dipole supramolecular interaction.

A case-control study was conducted to determine whether bone mass is reduced in Chinese patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and to study the risk factors for low bone mass in the same population. It was found that Chinese patients with AN are at risk of low bone mineral density (BMD), with duration of illness and lowest body mass index (BMI) being significant predictors of reduced BMD in Chinese patients with AN.

One-dimensional silicon-carbon nanotubes and nanowires of various shapes and structures were synthesized via the reaction of silicon with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (as templates) at different temperatures. The multiwalled silicon nanotube (SICNT) was found to transform to a beta-SiC crystalline structure by electron beam annealing under transmission spectroscopy (TEM).

Research on both anorexic and bulimic patients in Hong Kong indicates that the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) is a suboptimal screening tool for community assessment of atypical anorexia, although complementary application of a classification tree somewhat improved prediction.

A new series of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) molecules are prepared by attaching various strong electron-withdrawing groups to a triphenylamine backbone and their chemical structures and optoelectronic properties are examined. The compounds have displayed intensive ICT interactions that have led to substantial extension of their absorption spectral response, which is used for efficient solar cells.

Field-effect transistors with organic-inorganic heterojunctions of molybdenum trioxide (Mo[O.sub.3])/pentacene and Mo[O.sub.3]/copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) as active layers are studied. The studies have shown significant electron energy level bending and space charge regions of high conductivity at the heterojunction.

The Asian African Association for Plasma Training (AAAPT) has helped in establishing vigorous plasma-related programs, including materials processing and fusion studies, in developing countries. The research has included work to develop new concepts of radiation enhancement and an array of applications and the network has contributed significantly to the understanding of pulsed dense plasmas.

The synthesis of zinc selenide (ZnSe) nanoribbons and nanowires with their microstructural characteristics using laser ablation of ZnSe powders is reported. The study reveals that the growth of the nanoribbons and nanowires follows the vapor-solid and vapor-liquid-solid mechanism, respectively.

The production of a new type of hydrocarbon nanotubes and onions with interlayer spacings by sonochemical reactions of silicon nanowires with common organic solvents under ambient conditions is described. It is found that sonication facilitates the formation of different types of carbon nanostructures and causes the extrusion of the products.

The synthesis of single-crystal silicon ribbons of nano dimensions achieved by thermal evaporation of silicon monoxide (SiO) without using any templates or catalysts is reported. The discovery of the existence of well-ordered, defect-free and extremely thin narrow single-crystal silicon nanoribbons not only extends the understanding of crystal growth in nanoscale but is also scientifically interesting and technologically promising.
