The China Study of Midlife Women data is used to test the notion that East Asian women have a low level of midlife symptom reporting compared with North American women. The analysis demonstrates that women's midlife symptom reporting in China cannot be equated with findings on women in Japan.

The attitudes towards sex in later life, the actual prevalence of sexual activity and the relation of the sexual attitudes to the sexual behavior in middle-aged and older Chinese women are examined. The data shows that nearly three-quarters of the women above 40 years of age have an active sexual life, they display an age-cohort variation in sexual attitudes and levels of sexual activity and the attitudes about sex expressed by them are different from the sexual behavior that they report.
