The practicality of developing highly-dechlorinating anaerobic methanogenic granules and their performance in treating wastewaters with high pentachlorophenol (PCP) concntrations were evaluated. A mixture of acetate, propionate, butyrate and methanol were used as the carbon source for the development of the granules in a laboratory-scale anaerobic upflow sludge blanket reactor. Higher PCP sensitivity was demonstrated by syntrophic propionate degraders and acetate-utilizing methanogens compared to syntrophc butyrate degraders.

The H.B. Fuller Co's actions in Latin America do not match its long-time record for corporate social responsibility. The company's has responded inadequately to charges that Latin American street children used its solvent-based shoe glue as a narcotic. It has also sold lead-based paints, banned in the US because the paint has been shown to cause pediatric brain damage, as recently as 1995 in Central America. The company has also sold pentachlorophenol-based pesticides there. The US government has opposed pentachlorophenol use and the World Hate Organization has warned that it is a carcinogen. Many Central American countries do not ban these substances but their marketing cannot be considered ethical in view of US findings.
