The designing of safer genetically engineered organisms is discussed for environmental release with specific emphasis on the use of bacteria plasmid addiction systems to limit their survival for minimizing the anticipated risk. A novel strategy is conceptualized to construct 'Suicidal Genetically Engineered Microorganisms' by exploring/combining the knowledge of different plasmid addiction systems and inducible degradative operons of bacteria.

Clostridium carboxidivorans strain [P7.sup.T] is a strictly anaerobic acetogenic bacterium that produces acetate, ethanol, butanol, and butyrate. The C. carboxidivorans genome contains all the genes for the carbonyl branch of the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway for C[O.sub.2] fixation, and it encodes enzymes for conversion of acetyl coenzyme A into butanol and butyrate. doi: 10.1128/JB.00877-10

Oligotropha carboxidovorans [OM5.sup.T] (DSM 1227, ATCC 49405) is a chemolithoautotrophic bacterium with the capability to utilize carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. It is also capable of heterotrophic growth under appropriate environmental conditions. Here we report the annotated genome sequence of the circular chromosome of this organism.
