An analysis of flyingfish Hirundichthys affinis of the East Caribbean determines otolith aging and growth rate variation by measuring daily otolith-increment in lab-produced larvae. This validates the use of counting otolith-increment measures to determine the age of H. affinis juveniles. Their growth rate is influenced by temporal and spatial temperature variations, with high growth in high sea-surface temperature for juvenile hatching in summer and higher growth rates near islands. Temporal and spatial differences in H. affinis spawning frequency are influenced by varying juvenile growth rates.
