Abstract

The genomic similarities of several Chlamydia isolates were investigated by examining genomic amplified fragment length polymorphism fingerprints. Cluster analysis of selected isolates from all species showed groups other than those based on sequence data from single genes but was in agreement with available DNA-DNA hybridization data. Cluster analysis of amplified fragment length polymorphism fingerprints of representatives of all species gave suggestions for a grouping of chlamydiae based on the analysis of the whole genome.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the existence of additional members of the order Chlamydiales. A polymerase chain reaction was designed to determine all known Chalmydiaceae sequences in one reaction. Primers were chosen to amplify a fragment of the 16S rRNA gene. DNA was then isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of health controls. Experimental results indicated a novel lineage separated from the genus Chlamydia with four known Chlamydial species.

Abstract

In this paper we present a case history of a homosexual HIV-positive male with a painless nodule on the penis. Screening for sexually transmitted diseases did not detect any infection until the node perforated spontaneously. A diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum was made when chlamydia trachomatis type L2 DNA was extracted from the lesion. This case illustrates that standard screening may not be sufficient for making the diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum. DOI: 10.1097/OLQ.0b013e3181c134b1
