A survey of 375 chairmen and non-executives reveals that 70% of non-executives think that the entire amount of executive compensation and the rate of basic salary as a portion of total compensation are somewhat right. Results also show that 77% agree or strongly agree that yearly bonus plans represent strategic corporate priorities. Implications for managing executive compensation are discussed.

New Zealand has a unique model of public broadcasting for television. The state broadcaster is almost totally commercial although since 2003 it has been given a charter and some limited public funding. A state agency, NZ On Air, administers funding contestable between national broadcasters for public broadcasting, meaning in essence local (national) content in the threatened genres of drama, documentary, children's and minority programs. But this system is under challenge from the rise of multi-channel and the transition to digital Audiences are fragmenting and the combined impact of broadband, the PVR and VOD threaten the notion of the broadcast schedule and the viability of commercial free-to-air television itself. The concluding section of this paper examines issues for the New Zealand model in adapting to the digital challenge, and looks at the criteria on which the model's success or failure may be judged.

Solar urticaria (sun rash) occurs in some people after exposure to the sun. One of the characteristics of this condition is the formation of a skin wheal, or raised area, with associated itching. The exposure time required to produce a wheal varies from person to person and is known as whealing time. Studies were performed on biopsies of skin from subjects exposed to a controlled radiation source designed to simulate the sun, with increasing doses of radiation given as multiples of the whealing time for each individual. Control biopsies were taken from normal, unexposed skin. The specimens were examined for the presence of eosinophil major basic protein, which serves as a marker for the presence of eosinophils, a type of blood cell present in inflammatory skin conditions. Eosinophil major basic protein is stored in large granules within the eosinophil when the cell is intact, and moves outside the eosinophil when the granules rupture, as they must do when the cell does its work against inflammation. This part of the normal response to tissue damage is known as degranulation. It leads to the deposition of several substances, including major basic protein, in body tissues, and is associated with swelling (edema) and changes in blood capillary permeability. Results indicate that eosinophils enter and remain in the tissue when a wheal is formed, with associated deposition of major basic protein. The amount of major basic protein deposited increases in proportion to the length of ultraviolet exposure. Eosinophilic degranulation, besides being part of the normal response to tissue injury, may be part of the process producing the symptoms of solar urticaria. Chronic actinic dermatitis, as a single syndrome, has been suggested to include actinic reticuloid and photosensitive eczema. Actinic reticuloid is a chronic, severe skin disorder (without apparent inflammation) which occurs most often in elderly men, affecting sun-exposed skin. It is often confused with T-cell lymphoma, but actinic reticuloid has a very low T cell helper/suppressor ratio. Photosensitive eczema has an eczematous appearance and occurs at lower levels of UVA radiation (under 340 nm). Due to reports of cases of photosensitive eczema at greater than 340 nm and cases of actinic reticuloid which seemed to progress to photosensitive eczema, the unifying concept was proposed. Fourteen patients with chronic actinic dermatitis were studied to determine if a low T cell helper/suppressor ratio exists for chronic actinic dermatitis, and if so, is there a relationship between the T cell ratio and the severity of tissue change, or the extent of photosensitivity. Photobiologic, histologic and immunohistochemical investigations were completed. The tissues studied ranged from chronic dermatitis (inflammation) to cutaneous T cell lymphoma (abnormal lymphatic tissue growth). Immunohistological staining revealed that infiltrates from the epidermis into the dermis of the skin consisted mainly of T cell lymphocytes, and more severe tissue changes were associated with lower T cell helper/suppressor ratios. Levels of helper/suppressor T cells circulating in the blood were obtained for six patients; they were normal in five patients, and reduced in one patient. The spectrum of photobiologic abnormality did not appear to correlate with the severity of the tissue change, or variation of the T cell ratios. It was concluded that the predominance of suppressor cells, which delay anti-tumor responses in the body, may indicate a predisposition to lymphoma in patients with actinic reticuloid.
