A redox-transmetalation process that is effective as a general protocol for the fabrication of high quality and well-defined core-shell type bimetallic nanoparticles on the sub-10 nm scale is presented. The nanostructures, magnetic properties and reaction byproducts of the core-shell nanomaterial including Co@Au, Co@Pd, Co@Pt and nanoparticles are spectroscopically characterized and identified to confirm the chemical process that promotes the core-shell structure formation.

The composition, magnetism and stage transition of core-shell type CoPt nanoparticles on the route to solid solution alloy nanostructures are methodically examined. The relationship between the nanostructures and their magnetic characteristics is explained through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy as a vital analytical tool.

Several different Shewanella strains are analyzed to determine the ability of the strains for the biogenic production of the various novel, photoactive As-S nanotubes. The analysis also demonstrates the significance of the bacterial growth and reduction rate of As(V) compounds in the production of these strains.

Amorphous Ge nanoparticles are prepared by capping butyl groups and are characterized using XAS, TEM, FT-IR reflectance and electrochemical cycling. The capping ligand plays an important role in controlling the irreversible capacity as opposed to lithium-storage metals, which showed a large irreversible capacity.

The local structures around Co atoms in cobalt oxide subjected to electrochemical insertion-extraction of lithium are investigated using Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The insertion of lithium causes the local structure around Co atoms to become asymmetric.
