An anaerobic batch system was used to measure the sorption and reduction kinetics of trichlorotheylenes and tetrachloroethylenes with metallic iron. A generalized Langmuir isotherm expression was used to model the sorption behavior of the compounds. The results showed that reduction rates of PCE and TCE are first-order and that sorption occurs primarily in nonreactive sites.

Different methods of weakly-nonlinear stability analyses are applied to prototype reaction-diffusion equations and the results are compared. These equations reproduce features of dissipative phenomena model systems. Importance is given to subtleties involved in scaling and deriving asymptotically-valid solutions. Pattern formational aspects of different instabilities are related to the bifunctional behavior of the model equations.
