International and national agendas are redesigning the terms of intellectual-property (IP) laws to create cultural property for developing nations. Debates over IP and cultural-property 'rights' or legal needs for 'protection' are critical to anthropology's effort to reflect on how the production of knowledge, even culture itself, is variously construed to originate with, or 'belong to,' particular individuals, ethnic communities, or nation-states. Reite people on the Rai Coast of Papua New Guinea describe a large ceremonial drum (a garamut) as a man. In its construction, a garamut is the focus of a process which brings forth a form of social relations, as well as the object itself. I ask, 'What language might we use to describe such a creation?'. In recent discussions of art, the concepts of aesthetics and technology have been central. Drawing briefly on this literature, I approach an ethnographic description of garamut construction as revealing the particular way in which Reite people generate their social world. The construction is based upon mythic knowledge. This shapes the mode in which persons as gendered agents, and with particular identities, are made to appear. A specific 'aesthetic' scheme is thus apparent. The emergence of the garamut cannot be seen as the end of the process. The object has effect within and upon the relations given form by its emergence. Formation is ongoing, with becoming built in. Les Reite qui vivent sur la cote de Rai en Nouvelle Guinee papouasienne decrivent un grand tambour ceremonial (un garamut) comme etant un homme. Intellectual resources are strongly tied to ownership and identity among Nekgini speakers in Papua New Guinea. This relationship is complicated by the concept that intellectual resources are not the property of individuals nor simple collectivities.

A standard additions method for calibrating the response of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) is assessed. Desolvated particles from an ultrasonic nebulizer and particles from an ablation cell are introduced simultaneously to a twin quadrupole ICPMS. Matrix-matched or pelletized solid standards are not required, and the solution standards are easily prepared. The transport of sample particles from the LA cell and of aerosol particles from the solution nebulizer must be measured. The relative accuracy for the analysis of steel reference materials is a few percent, which is comparable to that obtained with matched solid standards.

Hydrolyzed soybean isolates SP-A and SP-B (Abbott Laboratories, OH), developed for use in enteral nutritional products, were tested in cultures of C2BBe cells, a colonic adenocarcinoma cell line with enterocytic differentiation, to evaluate effects on cell growth, maturation and ability to resist infection by enteric bacteria. SPA delayed formation of confluent monolayers by 10 d compared with cells cultured without SP-A. SP-A also caused a retardation in the development of intercellular tight junctions as measured by transmonolayer electrical resistance (TER). SP-B had no effect on cell proliferation otTER of intestinal cell cultures. SP-A and SP-B enhanced the development of the brush border enzymes alkaline phosphatase and isomaltase over a 28 d period. By these criteria, SP-A and SP-B appear to affect intestinal epithelial cell development in culture. When C2BBe monolayers were exposed to the enteric bacteria, Salmonella typhimurium or Salmonella typhi, an inhibition of the passage of S. typhi was seen in cultures with SP-A and SP-B. No effect on the passage of S. typhimurium was seen with either soy isolate. Partially purified soy isolates therefore impart resistance to selected enteroinvasive bacteria. Addition of soy hydrolysates to the media of cultured intestinal cells may serve as a rapid and economical screening mechanism for preclinical trials that would test the therapeutic benefits of soybean isolates. Pulses of analyte and matrix ions from individual drops are measured simultaneously using a twin quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The sample solution is introduced by monodisperse dried microparticulate injection (MDMI). At modest Pb concentrations (500 ppm), a shoulder on the leading edge of the [Li.sup.+] signal appears. At higher matrix concentrations (1000 to at least 1500 ppm), a dip in the leading edge of the [Li.sup.+] signal develops. These changes in the shapes of the [Li.sup.+] pulses are attributed to space charge effects in the extraction system and ion optics of the mass spectrometer. A qualitative depiction for this behavior is proposed, in which the [Li.sup.+] ions are deflected out of the preferred ion path and then refocused by the ion optics. Part of the [Li.sup.+] ion cloud is driven ahead of the [Pb.sup.+] cloud, and part is trapped behind the [Pb.sup.+] cloud. The result is a shoulder on the leading edge of the [Li.sup.+] signal. With the Pb matrix present, the shapes of the analyte ion pulses are sensitive to the voltages applied to the first two ion lenses, especially the extractor lens. This observation shows that the part of the matrix effect that occurs in the ion optics takes place mainly in the first two lenses.

Direct immunofluorescence may be a better, faster diagnostic test for rickettsialpox than the standard tests for blood antibody levels. Researchers studied 13 patients who were suspected of contracting rickettsialpox at some point during the 1980's in New York City. The suspected diagnosis was confirmed in all 13 patients, using indirect or direct fluorescent-antibody techniques. Rickettsialpox may be mistaken for chickenpox, but differs in that the initial skin lesion, the eschar, is larger and darker than the other lesions, which are sparser than those of chickenpox. The eschar was found to have higher concentrations of the organism than the secondary lesions, and may be a better site from which to diagnose the disease. Rickettsialpox has an incubation period of nine to 14 days. It may be successfully treated with antibiotics such as tetracycline or erythromycin. Rickettsialpox is transmitted from the house mouse via bloodsucking mites that bite and infect human hosts.
