Abstract

The processes behind the transformation of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) in the USA from a segregated organization in 1920 to an organization promoting racial equality, both within its ranks and in the wider community by 1965 are explored. The interracial friendships and relationships formed by women within the YWCA were crucial in breaking down the national organization's acceptance of segregation and creating the will to overcome regional inertia, conservatism and hostility.

Abstract

Edith Sampson made significant contributions to civil rights, despite the tendency of African American historians to marginalize her work. Sampson was part of the World Town Hall Seminar, an anti-Communist world tour in 1949, where she spoke out about racial discrimination in the US. She was appointed part of the US delegation to the United Nations in 1950 and made other world tours. Sampson admitted she was out of touch with the civil rights movement but supported the NAACP's position that the US provided the best opportunities for racial progress.

Abstract

The narratives of both Ninotchka and Silk Stockings, two films within the capitalist/Communist romance genre that were most critically, commercially and aesthetically, successful are analyzed. The way in which the films both use consumption of fashion as a symbol of significant difference between the Soviet Union and the West is examined, exploring the discourse of female fashion consumption and in particular stockings, representing political, social, and economic values.
