The aim of this study was to estimate the association between country income distribution and human development with the 12-month occurrence of major depressive episodes across countries. A total of 251,158 people surveyed by the World Health Organization from 2002 to 2003 from 65 countries were included in the study. The survey contained items for identifying major depressive episodes (MDE) in the previous 12 months, attained education (used as an indicator of individual socioeconomic status) and other demographic information. Income inequality was measured with the Gini index, a national-level indicator; the United Nations human development index (HDI) measured overall country development. Country-level and multilevel linear regression models were utilized to study the associations. We found that moderately developed countries had the lowest adjusted prevalence of MDE followed by high and low developed countries. The Gini index was positively associated with major depressive episodes, bur only among high HDI countries. After adjusting for age, gender, marital status, education and HDI, the multilevel prevalence ratio indicated a 4% increase in risk of MDE for a person living in a country associated with a 1% increment in income equality, This finding means, for example, that comparing two highly developed countries, one with low income inequality (Gini = 0.25) with another with high income inequality (Gini = 0.39), one would expect to see an increase in the prevalence of MDE from 4.0% to 6.2%. The roles of informal social ties in affecting healthcare workers' risk of injury and assault were investigated in a longterm care facility for the elderly in the US. The original hypothesis was that nurses and healthcare assistants who integrated more with their coworkers would have lower risk. A crude measure of familiarity and social integration with coworkers was constructed from staff attendance records. This variable, which indicates working a floor and shift one has routinely worked on in the past, was associated with a moderate increase in risk of being injured after controlling for lifting demands and a fairly strong increased risk of being assaulted after controlling for resident combativeness. An interaction between social integration and job title was found. The primary associations were in the opposite direction of what was expected. The results suggest that social forces among healthcare workers shape the distribution of risk among workers in a manner more complex than some theories of social integration have suggested. New hypotheses are proposed to explore how social norms and expectations affect the way workers interact with each other and shape the distribution of risk among workgroup members. A simple analytical solution is presented for approximating the time-dependent beach-profile response to severe storms. This solution is in the form of a convolution integral involving a time-varying erosion-forcing function and an exponential erosion-response function. The erosion-forcing function reflects changes in the nearshore water level and breaking wave height. In this paper, an idealized storm-surge hydrograph is considered from which an analytic solution is obtained for beach and dune erosion associated with severe storms such as hurricanes or northeasters. It is shown that for a given initial beach geometry and sediment size, the peak water level and the incipient breaking wave height determine the maximum erosion potential that would be achieved if the beach were allowed to respond to equilibrium. Because of the assumed exponential erosion rate, beach response obtained from the convolution method is found to lag the erosion forcing in time, and is damped relative to the maximum erosion potential such that only a fraction of the equilibrium response actually occurs.

The precautionary principle has provoked a spirited debate among environmentalists worldwide, but it is equally relevant to public health and shares much with primary prevention. Its central components are (1) taking preventive action in the face of uncertainty; (2) shifting the burden of proof to the proponents of an activity; (3) exploring a wide range of alternatives to possibly harmful actions; and (4) increasing public participation in decision making. Precaution is relevant to public health, because it can help to prevent unintended consequences of well-intentioned public health interventions by ensuring a more thorough assessment of the problems and proposed solutions. It can also be a positive force for change. Three aspects are stressed: promoting the search for safer technologies, encouraging greater democracy and openness in public health policy, and stimulating reevaluation of the methods of public health science.
