A kinetic study of the aminolyses of aryl diphenylphosphinates and diphenylphosphinothioates, demonstrating the various effects of the modification of the electrophilic center from the P[double bond]O to P[double bond]S is presented. The results prove that the reaction of the aryl diphenylphosphinothioates proceeds through a tighter transition state, as compared to the other compound, as it is comparatively less reactive in nature.

The investigation of the effect of modification of the electrophilic center from C=O to P=O on reactivity and reaction mechanism was carried out to understand aminolysis of Y-substituted phenyl diphenylphosphinates and benzoates. It is concluded from the results that the aminolysis of Y-substituted phenyl diphenylphosphinates proceeds through a concerted mechanism in which nucleophilic attack and leaving group departure are advanced only to a small extent at the TS on the basis of the small [[beta].sub.nue] (=0.38) and small r (=0.30) values, respectively.

The impact of high work function metal gate and high dielectric on memory properties of NAND-type charge trap flash (CTF) memory devices are discussed. A key role is played by high work-function metal gate and high permittivity dielectric in the elimination of electron back tunneling though the blocking dielectric during the erase operation.

The conjugated polymer TFTs array was successfully fabricated on plastic substrate by the use of micro-contact printing method. The microcontact printing process, which uses a silicon elastomer stamp, enables the patterning of polymer layers without any photolithography process.

Research indicates that Transglutaminase C (TGase C) could play a role in the cellular aging process. The level and activity of TGase C protein in endogenously aged human red blood cells and in vitro multipassage human primary fibroblasts increased in response to aging. An organ-specific TGase C expression pattern in aging was identified via in vivo studies of the brain and liver tissues of various-aged Sprague-Dawley rats.

Several first-principle quantum chemical simulations are conducted to determine the oxygen deficiency defects observed in the amorphous, atomic layer deposited [Al.sub.2][O.sub.3] films. The films are shown to be highly oxygen deficient and are found to exhibit similar oxygen vacancy parameters as the crystalline films.

Aminolysis of X-substituted phenyl diphenylphosphinates in [H.sub.2]O/dimethyl sulfoxide is studied. The studies have shown that strongly basic ethylamine is ca. 2-fold more reactive than piperidine toward 2,4-dinitrophenyl diphenylphosphinate, although the former is 0.35 p[K.sub.a] units less basic than the latter.

The total synthesis of (+)-serratezomine A is described. Longest linear sequence (15 steps) is needed for preparing the natural product from a commercially available aldehyde and the assembly of the contiguous array of six stereocenters is accomplished with high stereocontrol.

The surface modification characteristics of liquid crystal (LC) alignment layers irradiated with various argon (Ar) ion beam (IB) energies are examined as a substituted for rubbing technology. The chemical structure analysis has showed that the alignment ability of LCs is because of the preferential reorientation of the carbon network due to the breaking of C[double bond]O double bonds in the imide ring parallel to the incident IB direction.

We investigated the magnetic properties of as-sputtered FeTaN films as a function of deposition temperature and composition. At the deposition temperature higher than 200 [degrees] C, both soft magnetism and magnetic moments can be fully achieved. While the Ta and N contents in the films affect the magnetic properties, the N content exhibits stronger effects. The magnetic properties are affected by the film microstructures via. crystallinity, grain size, and formation of [Fe.sub.x]N phases. An excessive N incorporation into the films causes incomplete crystallization and/or formation of [Fe.sub.3] N phases in the as-deposited state, leading to a poor soft magnetic property. As-deposited FeTaN film at the optimum composition of [Fe.sub.91.7][Ta.sub.4.2][N.sub.4.1] gives the best soft magnetic properties; coercivity of ~2 Oe and permeability of ~1600 stable up to the frequency of 100 MHz. A double rectangular spiral inductor is fabricated using FeTaN films. The inductor is composed of internal coils sandwiched by magnetic layers. Characteristics of inductor performance are investigated with an emphasis on planarization of magnetic films. In the absence of the planarizaton process, the grating topology of upper magnetic films over coil arrays degrades the soft magnetic properties and the inductor performance. It also induces a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis aligned to the magnetic flux direction. This alignment prevents the upper magnetic films from contributing to the total induction. Glass bonding is a viable method for achieving a completely planar inductor structure. The planar inductor with glass bonding shows excellent performance: inductance of 1.1 [micro]H, Q factor of 7 (at 5 MHz), and the dc current capability up to 100 mA.
