The effects of abiotic and biotic parameters on the occurrence of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) concentrations have been examined in waters north of the South Shetland Islands. Krill density rose from early to mid-summer, but density was low in the oceanic zone, and higher in the slope frontal zone.surface water circulation in areas of krill concentrations was sluggish, enhancing the residence time. Krill appear highly adapted to exploit the rich food resources of the frontal/inshore zone.
