Abnormal perceptual-motor coordination is hypothesized here to be involved in social deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To test this hypothesis, high functioning children with ASD and typical controls, similar in age as well as verbal and perceptive performance, performed perceptual-motor coordination tasks and several social competence tests. Spontaneous coordination, and intentionally required in-phase and anti-phase were examined. The oscillation kinematics, as well as the accuracy and stability of spontaneous coordination were similar in both groups. In intentional coordination, ASD children produced less accurate, less stable and less complex relative phases than the control group, and in-phase and anti-phase performances that were similar in accuracy, stability, and complexity. Simultaneously executed limb movements interfere with each other. Whereas the interference between discrete movements is examined mostly from a cognitive perspective, that between rhythmic movements is studied mainly from a dynamical systems perspective. As the tools and concepts developed by both communities are limited in their applicability to the other domain, it remains unclear if a common cause underlies motor interference in both domains. We investigated the interference between simultaneously executed discrete and rhythmic wrist movements. The discrete movements' reaction time and movement time decreased with increasing rhythmic movement frequency. The discrete movements accelerated or decelerated the rhythmic movements in a manner that depended on movement frequency and the discrete movement's initiation phase. The acceleration/deceleration profile was bimodal at low frequencies and unimodal at high frequencies, mimicking the hallmark feature of rhythmic-rhythmic coordination, thus suggesting that interference between movements may be invariant across different movement types. A series of 8 experiments examined the phenomenon that a rapid aimed hand movement is executed faster when it is performed as a single, isolated movement than when it is followed by a second movement (the 1-target advantage). Three new accounts of this effect are proposed and tested: the eye movement hypothesis, the target uncertainty hypothesis, and the movement integration hypothesis. Data are reported that corroborate the 3rd hypothesis, but not the first 2 hypotheses. According to the movement integration hypothesis, the first movement in a series is slowed because control of the second movement may overlap with execution of the first. It is shown that manipulations of target size and movement direction mediate this process and determine the presence and absence of the 1-target advantage. Possible neurophysiological mechanisms and implications for motor control theory are discussed.
