The Los Vaqueros reservoir and dam project near Brentwood, CA, is the recipient of the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award for 1999. Los Vaqueros is the first major water project to be built in California since the late 1980s after the Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) was able to obtain the 100 permits required for its construction. Built at a cost of $450 million, the dam supplies fresh drinking water to more than 400,000 residents and 28 industrial customers in Contra Costa County. Los Vaqueros has also improved CCWD's emergency water supply from three days to three to six months.
