A virtual experiment combines insights from virtual reality in computer science, naturalistic decision-making from psychology, and field experiments from economics. The environmental policy applications of interest to us are the valuation of wild fire management policies such as prescribed burn. The methodological objective of virtual experiments is to bridge the gap between the artefactual controls of laboratory experiments and the naturalistic domain of field experiments or direct field studies. This should provide tools for policy analysis that combine the inferential power of replicable experimental treatments with the natural 'look and feel' of a field domain. We present data from an experiment comparing valuations elicited by virtual experiments to those elicited by instruments that have some of the characteristics of standard survey instruments, and conclude that responses in the former reflect beliefs that are closer to the truth. The rash of lawsuits against the smelting industry in Salt Lake County, UT, in 1904-1906 was an example of the Progressive reform attitude prevalent in America during the period. The progressive attitude is seen as a 'status revolution' of the old middle class, who felt threatened by smelter operators. These smelting capitalists even attempted to take control of local politics, further alienating the farmers, the representative middle class, who felt it was their area of concern.

Michael Martin's argument that theistic statements are factually meaningless because they do not pass the verificationist test is questionable. Analysis of Martin's theories as stated in 'Atheism: a Philosophical Justification' shows the problems of the weak verification theory. Richard Swinburne's criticism reveals the flaws in the theory. Moreover, even if the theory is accepted, the theistic statements can be proven meaningful. Martin's philosophical argument for atheism is groundless.

Network loading in an ATM network, which carries speech and broadcast style video signals, has been explained in the manufacture of a discrete-time, discrete state Markov model. The prediction of network overload is possible on the basis of whether the model has extended over an overload limit division which separate lossless from lossy states. This information has been responsible for the development of a simplified cell discard which is used to generate temporal patterns of cell discards for different network loading levels.

H.J. McCloskey and others have argued against theism on the basis that God could and would have created a world with less evil in it than this one. However, this argument requires omniscience with respect to the amount of good and evil in this world as compared to an alternative or with respect to the consequences of change given the interrelationships in the world. Eliminating evils may also reduce opportunities for growth and development of free creatures. The skeptic's argument fails because of human epistemological limitations.

A sturdy and accurate dual-photogate timer was constructed using materials easily available from the nearest electronic shop and department store. Students could construct the timer using only a pencil soldering iron, wire nippers and a small needle-nose pliers. The power source could be either a 6 V lantern battery or a universal calculator power supply. The timer can be used in a number of elementary physics experiments, such as the measurement of the free fall of a small object.
