A.G. Wilson's approach to deriving the gravity model and M. Schneider's intervening-opportunities model aided the formulation of strategy to evolve a new gravity-opportunity model for trip distribution. A combination of Furness's matrix calibration methodology and Hooke and Jeeve's nonlinear optimizing technique facilitate the calibration of the new model. Southern Brazil's intermunicipal passenger flow by public transport is measured using this model.
