Abstract

Competitive fertilization assays to test for conspecific sperm precedence is performed and it is found that eggs of the two sea urchins species showed a marked preference for conspecific sperm when fertilized with heterospeicific sperm mixtures. Results suggest that competition among males and an egg's choice of sperm may play a significant role in reducing the incidence of hybrids in these species.

Abstract

Research has been conducted on sympatric and allpatric populations of tropical sea urchins. The results demonstrate the difference between these populations and suggest that the binding is the subject to molecular character displacement in reproductive proteins.
