India celebrated its 60th anniversary of independence in 2007 with much joy and triumph because of its continuous success in the corporate sector as well as expansion in its global reach. The year has witnessed a deepening of ties with the U.S. and in spite of its economic growth and other achievements, India still has to overcome many shortcomings and challenges, especially poverty.

This article discusses India's peaceful revolutions which have occurred over the past two decades. The author argues the revolutions have affected society, economics, and the political system which have contributed to the strengthening of democracy and the ability of India to thrive in the future.

The year 1997 saw India struggling with a fresh round of disturbances and agitations. These included the demise of the United Front government, which is a group of 14 political parties which governed India for 18 months, and shaky relations with Pakistan and China due to the Kashmir issue and Tibetan activities, respectively. The political turmoil that dominated the Indian scene in 1997 affected economic development and foreign investments, as investors became wary of the Indian market.

As India and Pakistan "enter their sixth decade of independence, it is time to close a tragic chapter that has bedeviled their relations from the very outset."

The year 1996 was marked by political upheaval in India. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao initiated the investigation on illegal hawala transactions which involved several cabinet and opposition members. The move was perceived to be politically motivated but the scandal affected him negatively because his party was defeated during the Eleventh General Election. This was followed by several cases filed against him which included corruption, bribery and fraud. The United Front coalition selected H.D. Deve Gowda as Rao's successor after Rao stepped down from office.

The early stages of nuclearization in South Asia have resulted in the existence of the stability/instability paradox. South Asia, which has been witness to internal strife and interstate conflicts, may be further prone to crisis with the presence of nuclear forces. The acquisition of ballistic missiles by India and Pakistan may further destabilize the region.

India and Pakistan have already fought three wars and remain in a seemingly perpetual adversarial state. The status of Kashmir, the issue in the first two wars, remains a point of conflict. Still it is unlikely the two sides will war again soon as both realize the next one may not be limited.

The problem of mapping the parallel bottom up execution of Datalog programs to an interconnected network of processors is studied. The parallelization is achieved by using hash functions that partition the set of instantiations for the rules. We first examine this problem in an environment where the number of processors and the interconnection topology is known, and communication between program segments residing at non-adjacent processors is not permitted. An algorithm is presented that decides whether a given Datalog program can be mapped onto such an architecture. We then relax the constraint on the architecture by allowing program segments residing at non-adjacent processors to communicate. A theory of approximate mappings is developed, and an algorithm to obtain the closest approximate mapping of a given Datalog program onto a given architecture is presented.

The demise of the Cold War has resulted in the creation of a power vacuum in different regions. In the South Asian region, the Indian-Pakistani conflict over Kashmir could transform into widespread turmoil if left unattended. Although each of India's options in solving the Kashmir problem has its drawbacks, some choices are more feasible than others. A restructuring of Kashmir's administration and politics may be the best solution the Indian government could offer. Democracy and federalism must be instituted in Kashmir.

US foreign policy in the post-Cold War era needs to focus on South Asia as the region contains 1/4 of the world's population, is strategically located and conflict-prone. The US can play a significant role in promoting democracy and economic liberalization in South Asia. It can also help prevent nuclear proliferation in the region. South Asian countries, especially India and Pakistan, need to reconsider their foreign, economic and nuclear policies to effectively adapt to the changed international order.

Unlike many professional armies in the developing world the Indian Army has shown little or no interest in political involvement. During British colonial rule the officers and the men of the army were socialized into accepting the notion of political neutrality. Independent India's politicians, most notably Jawaharlal Nehru, carefully reinforced this tradition. In the past few decades several developments have threatened this Nehruvian legacy. Increasing ethnolonguistic violence coupled with the venality of local police forces have led to increasing reliance on the Army to maintain civil order. Its tactics and strategy are designed to fight organized forces not urban mobs or elusive civilian terrorists. More importantly, in an ethnically plural state like India, repeated use of the Army to quell communal violence threatens to politicize the Army. Inordinate reliance on the Army to maintain civil order may also help erode its long-standing tradition of political neutrality. When the Army begins to assume duties normally restricted to the civil bureaucracy the temptation to intervene in politics increases dramatically.
