A synthetic strategy was developed to perform synthesis of porphyrins containing between one and four stereogenic centers, such that their molecular weights vary only as a result of methyl groups which give the chiral forms. The self-assembly and chiral structure of the aggregates of porphyrin molecules are observed to be significantly influenced by the number of stereogenic centers.

The magnetic-field-induced birefringence as a new sensitive technique was applied to probe the aggregation kinetics of macrocyclic molecules in solution. The findings for aggregations kinetics which are linked to the molecular properties could provide guidelines to better understand the mechanisms underlying the self-assembly of molecules to allow more rational design of the molecular building blocks.

A joint experimental and theoretical approach for the study of the assembly of end-substituted oligothiophenes at surfaces with different polarities is presented. The studies of the self-assembly at surfaces of oligothiophenes end-capped with oligo(ethylene oxide) or hexyl groups show that the molecule-molecule interactions and the molecule-substrate interactions are both at work and lead to well-defined nanostructures, from two dimensional ultrathin regular layers to one dimensional fibrillar objects.

Monolayer formation and their properties at the organic liquid/solid interface with a focus on structure and control of monolayer formation, reactivity, and spectroscopy are studied. The liquid/solid interface provides an ideal environment to investigate self-assembly phenomena, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

The two-dimensional ordering of a unique electron-donor-acceptor-donor-triads molecule is presented. The donor and acceptor parts of the molecules are distinguished by bias-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy imaging.
