Abstract

Balhimycin, which is a glycopeptide antibiotic having a hydrated keto sugar group, is derived from the fermentation broth of an Amycolatopsis sp. Spectroscopic and chemical analyses are performed for structural characterization of this antibiotic and its similarity to vancomycin is revealed. Balhimycins exhibit in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity and part antibiotic effects.

Abstract

Spectroscopic and chemical degradation studies enabled the examination of the structure of arthrichitin or C33H46N4O9. It is a new cell wall active depsipeptide isolated from the fermentation broth of Arthrinium phaeospermum. It comprises serine, beta-keto tryptophan, glutamic acid and 2,4-dimethyl-3-hydroxydodecanoic acid units. The long-range 13C-1H correlations between these four subunits are illustrated.
