Second-order rate constants (kN) are measured for the Michael-type reaction of 1-(X-substituted phenyl)-2-propyn-1-ones with a series of primary amines in H2O at 25.0 plusmn 0.1 degree Celsius and a linear Bronsted-type plot with a small beta(sub nuc) value is obtained. Hydrazine is more reactive than other primary amines of similar basicity and results in a positive deviation from the linear Bronsted-type plot.

Nucleophilic reactions of substituted phenyl acetates with butane-2,3-dione monoximate and p-chlorophenoxide have been examined. The results of these reactions in MeCN-H (sub)2 O mixtures of different compositions are presented.
