Abstract

The dimers involving benzene or other substituted [pi] systems were investigated to examine the relevance of the magnitudes of their attractive and repulsive interaction energy components in governing the geometries of several [pi]-[pi] systems. The findings suggest that the presence of substituents on the aromatic ring, irrespective of their electron withdrawing or donating nature leads to an increase in the binding energy.

The time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) approach is employed to explain the structure, as well as the optical properties of the phosphorescent platinum compounds. The interligand [pi]-[pi] interactions are shown to play an extremely significant role in determining the geometry and energy lowering in the triplet excimer formation in these phosphors.

The hyperthermal reactions, collision of ground state atomic oxygen [O([super 3]P)] with a liquid hydrocarbon squalane, were investigated using QM/MM direct dynamics. Abstract

What determines cross-national variations in the extent of anti-government protests in Asia? Anti-government protests have surged across Asia in recent years, with many contributing to consequential political change. However, systematic cross-national comparison of the determinants of protests in Asia is still largely missing. This article fills this important gap by quantitatively examining the explanatory power of the three main theories of contentious politics--grievance, resource mobilization, and political process theories--in the Asian context with new data on anti-government protests in all 25 Asian states from 1990 to 2016. The analysis finds that urbanization, information and communication technology, and regional demonstration effects are the strong catalysts of anti-govemment protests in Asia, while repressive state capacity particularly dampens protests. The findings offer important insights into the dynamics of the anti-government protests that have become increasingly salient in Asian politics. This paper examines an aspect of intra-household resource allocation not previously studied--the reassignment of dependent children among related income tax filers who have "doubled up" in a household for economic [...], This paper examines households with children and at least two related tax filers to determine whether the household lowers income tax liability by optimally reassigning dependents among filers. Using a simulation strategy, we examine the dependent claiming that leads to the lowest income tax liability for a household, and ask whether multifamily households claim optimally. We find that taxpayers in multifamily households reassign dependents to filers as the payoff to doing so--in terms of either tax minimization or EITC benefit--increases; and that the propensity to reassign dependents is greater for EITC-eligible filers. INTRODUCTION Human rights treaties articulate ambitious international standards, but in many parts of the world, domestic practices lag far behind. In the post-World War II period, the vast majority of [...], Since 1993, the United Nations has promoted national human rights institutions (NHRIs); these have spread to almost 120 countries. We assess what makes NHRIs effective, using quantitative and qualitative methods. We find that formal institutional safeguards contribute greatly to NHRI efficacy even in authoritarian and transition regimes. Complaint-handling mandates are particularly useful because they help NHRIs build broad bases of support. Our findings show how international organizations can wield great influence with soft tools such as recommendations and peer-review mechanisms.
