A new study uses the single-beam Z-scan technique to measure the nonlinear absorption and refraction properties of CdTr microcrystals doped in borosilicate glass.

The self-formation of quasiperiodic void structure inside the Ca[F.sub.2] crystal is described by using the single femtosecond laser beam. The results have shown that the length of the void array varied with the focal depth beneath the sample surface and have also provided an effective method of fabricating three-dimensional periodic microstructures inside various types of crystal materials.
