There is a robust body of work highlighting distinctive challenges encountered by leaders of small schools in pursuit of school improvement but this work has focused on the school as the unit of change and neglects the role of the district. As the district potentially influences what principals know and how they use their knowledge, this article examines how districts provide professional support for principals of small schools in rural or remote environments. The article identifies from the literature features of effective districts in supporting change and improvement in their schools. A case study is then presented of one district in Western Australia. This district's magnitude and remoteness yield rich insights into strategies assisting principals to enhance performance and vitality of rural or remote schools and their communities. Finally, suggestions are made for strengthening these strategies referring to the new model of supporting schools on the cusp of its implementation in Western Australia. This essay subjects Adorno's historical dialectic of musical material, as it pertains to instrumentation, to Bataille's economic reading of dialectics (and latterly, to Derrida's reading of Bataille). There is a certain excess, an accumulation of waste, that cannot be jettisoned in Adorno's musicology; the problems that arise pertain directly to a musical work's ontological status as transcendental 'thing in itself', score, and/or performance. The implications of this reading point to a radical discontinuity between score and performance that cannot easily be reconciled by recourse to some fictive notion of the 'work' itself. Background: Identification of the biological markers of anorexia nervosa (AN) is crucial for the development of new treatments. We aimed to determine whether AN is associated with disturbances in the nonconscious neural processing of innate signals of emotion and whether these disturbances persist after weight gain. Methods: In a retest design, 28 adolescent females with AN were tested at first admission to hospital and again after they had gained weight. Matched healthy control participants were tested at the same times. We assessed emotion-elicited event-related potentials (ERPs) during overt and covert presentation of emotion expressions, scores on an emotion-identification behavioural task, and symptom measures. We performed between and within group analyses. Results: Individuals with AN had a marked alteration in ERPs relative to healthy controls. Irrespective of the form of stimulus, early and late ERP components were significantly reduced in AN patients at baseline (when underweight) and on retest (after weight gain), especially in the temporo-occipital regions, suggesting a persistent disruption of the early automatic appraisal of salient emotional signals. Limitations: This study could have been improved with a longer standardized retest interval. Conclusion: There is likely a core, generic disturbance in AN in the early 'automatic' neural processing of emotion irrespective of weight or nutritional status. Topotactic modification, by both oxidation and reduction, of the composition, structures and magnetic properties of the layered manganese oxychalcogenides are presented. The compounds have displayed antiferromagnetic ordering of the manganese magnetic moments in the outer layers of the perovskite slabs and fluorination has the effect of increasing the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature and the size of the ordered moment.

The research presents the synthesis, structure, electrical and physical properties of the polar oxysulfide CaZnOS. The compound is found to exhibit a non-phase-matchable second harmonic generation, as it is ferroelectric and contains very small pyroelectric coefficient between the room temperature and the boiling point of water.

Over the past few years there has been an increasing interest in the use of psychoanalytic ideas within a sociological framework. These ideas have been largely developed within sociological theory rather than practice. There does, however, seem to be a new frame of thought and practice emerging which we could term psycho-social studies, perhaps even a new discipline in its own right. In this article I will discuss the development of the use of psychoanalytic ideas around sociological issues, explore some of the tensions that have arisen and evaluate the implications for methodological practice. An homologous series of layered manganese oxysulfides which consists of Mn[O.sub.2] sheets separated from antifluorite-type copper sulfide layers of variable thickness by [Sr.sup.2} ions, are described. The entire series of oxysulfides display substantial and similar copper deficiencies in the copper sulfied layers and X-ray and power neutron diffraction measurements demonstrate that the copper ions in the m=2 and m=3 compounds are crystallographically disordered, which is consistent with the possibility of high two-dimensional copper ion mobility.

The synthesis of two structurally related strontium gallium nitrides containing [GaN(sub 3)](super 6-) anions is described. The results suggest that when both gallium and sodium are present in the melt, early transition metals are incorporated into the nitride products.

BaZnOS exhibits a structure composed of corner-linked ZnO2S2 tetrahedra, which represents a new coordination environment for zinc in the solid state. Measurement and calculation of the electronic structure shows a band gap of 3.9(3) eV, larger than the corresponding values in ZnS and ZnO and consistent with the more ionic nature of BaZnOS.

It is shown that the oxidative nitridation of intermetallies using ammonia is a convenient route for the synthesis of bulk ternary nitrides, which in the case of BaSiN(sub 2), for example may be employed at a relatively low temperatures. The structures of BaSiN(sub 2) and SrSiN(sub 2) appear to have no direct analogues in oxide chemistry or in the chemistry of the heavier chalcogenides or pnictides.

This article reports the findings of a recent survey of Russian households (N = 4023) which included questions on household budgetary management and financial decision-making. The findings are related to comparable British research on these questions. The budgetary practices of Russian households are shown to correspond to those typical of dual-earner Western households, but there is almost none of the variation according to socio-demographic characteristics of the household which has been found in British studies. In particular, there is no significant tendency for a higher degree of independence in budgeting or for men to have a larger say in higher income households or in those in which the woman defines herself as a housewife. Ammonolysis of reactive oxide precursors affords the vanadium(V) phase Ba2VO3N that is shown by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy to contain pseudotetrahedral VO3N4- anions. Ba3V2O8 is reported to be stable under NH3, it is formed here and then reacts with BaO or Ba-rich vanadium oxide phases to afford Ba2VO3N, indicating the higher Ba:V ratio is important in stabilizing the tetrahedral oxynitride anion.

Results indicate that the promoters for both the signal transducer/repressor blaRI/blaI as well as their mRNA are inducible. Data point out that the promoters also synthesize chloramphenicol acetyltransferase.

The Russian coal miners' strike which took place in Feb. 1996 failed despite overwhelming support from other workers due to the political weakness of the miners' trade unions. These unions failed to instill discipline into their members, preventing them from sustaining the strike and achieving political gains. Internal relations between production and management in Soviet enterprises pose the greatest challenge to reform. Such reform inevitably leads to deep conflicts, which cannot be handled with existing mechanisms. The four enterprises considered are all models, which began the market transformation early under dynamic leadership. They include Pionerka, a clothing factory; Bratchenko, a coal mine; LenKon, an industrial equipment manufacturer; and Plastmass, a large chemical factory. All illustrate the ways in which the power of Soviet workers differs from that of their Western counterparts.

This paper surveys a wide range of Soviet opinion poll data, mostly collected between the middle of 1990 and the middle of 1991, to investigate attitudes to the transition to the market economy. The majority of the population welcomed the transition to a market economy as the only means of freeing themselves from an oppressive system, and were willing to pay a high price for their liberation, but they were not willing to exchange one form of exploitation for another.

An analysis of the development of capitalism and privatizationin the former USSR is presented. Various political and administrative changes which occured in the former USSR contributed to the gradual introduction of capitalism and privatization into the economic system of the country.
