This industry overview discusses how the fine chemical industry is able to more quickly deliver fine chemicals in a cleaner, safer, and more cost-effective manner. Chemists and engineers are critical to this process.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Council will consider during its national meeting to be held on April, 1996 on petitions to eliminate the Society Committee on Publications and to establish a new and lower dues category for postdoctoral chemists. The elimination of the Society Committee on Publications is a result of the decision of ACS Board of Directors to establish a Governing Board for Publishing. The second petition would provide ACS membership to postdoctoral chemists at half normal dues.

The establishment of the World Wide Web has stimulated a proliferation of on-line chemical information. Chemists can gain access to on-going research and other information through the network. Majority of the chemical web sites established in the World Wide Web came as a result of side-research projects.

More chemists are considering the use of electronic publishing over traditional printed materials. Electronic publishing is cheaper, enables users to access particular topics through huge document volumes and facilitates the acquisition of regular topic updates. The American Chemical Society has taken the lead in elecrtronic publishing, with its 23 journals available as the CJACS Plus file on the STN International on-line system.

Chemists participating in the First Electronic Computational Chemistry Conference and the first International Chemometrics Internet Conference witnessed the vast potential of holding conferences using the Internet. More participants were able to express their views and were capable of simultaneously saving and receiving comments from their peers. Although some technical and psychological problems were encountered, chemists agreed that conferences held through the Internet are very effective and fruitful.

Two petitions amending the governing documents of the American Chemical Society (ACS) will be the agenda during the council meeting in Aug. 1994. Among the proposed changes are the bylaws on ACS elections. The petition aims to clarify the distinction between the terms 'nominee' and 'candidate,'as well as an ambiguity on provisions governing vacancies in the office of president-elect. The other petition deals with membership requirements and aims to stress a bachelor's degree in chemistry as the basis for all admission decisions.
