Transport critical-current measurements of commercial multifilamentary [Nb.sub.3]Sn at temperatures from 4 to 17 K and magnetic fields from 0 to 14 T are studied. Findings reveal the control of specimen temperature to within 60mK.

The article discusses the effect of axial strain at 4K for developmental [Nb.sub.3]Sn multifilamentary strand for the central solenoid of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project. Findings reveal compressive pre-strain of 0.19 percent and an irreversible strain limit of 0.8 percent.

The various effects of fatigue under the transverse compressive stress on the slit Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) coated conductors are analyzed. The induced fatigue enhances the properties of the conductors, making it appropriate for applications, including rotating machinery and industrial magnets

Investigating the electromechanical properties of these conductors, as well as provide a preliminary comparison of the effect of transverse stress on YBCO coatings on pure Ni versus Ni-5at.% alloy substrate materials. The microstructure of the samples after electromechanical testing has shown cracking of the YBCO layer.

The effects of cyclic and static transverse stress on the critical current of Ya-Ba-Cu-O coated tapes made using ion-beam-assisted deposition at 76K in self magnetic field are measured.

A study on superconducting materials reports on the systematic transport measurements throughout a broad range of temperatures derived for a bronze processed Nb3Sn multifilamentary wire in high magnetic fields up to 15 T. Within the context of the study, a unified scaling law is proposed that describes the field, temperature and strain dependence of volume pinning force data. This law will contribute to the development of superconducting cryocooled high-field magnet technology.

A study outlines the design of a new probe that was developed to investigate the impact of the parameters of strain and temperature on the transport critical current density of superconducting wires and tapes in high magnetic fields. It presents the first variable strain measurement of critical current density as a function of magnetic field at a temperature above 4.2K (12 K). The measurement was performed on a bronze processed Nb3Sn multifilamentary wire.

The critical current density of two modified jelly roll wires was measured as a function of magnetic field and of strain at 4.2 K. The two wires were the Hot Isostatic Pressed (HIP'ed) and unHIP'ed Nb3Sn modified jelly roll wires. Both wires were investigated for the reversibility of critical current density. For the HIP'ed sample, the critical current and upper critical field were decreased. Compared to the unHIP'ed wire, the reduced upper critical field of the HIP'ed wire was found to be less sensitive.

A study was conducted on powder-in-tube Pb1-xSnxMo6S8 Chevrel wires' overall critical current density at high magnetic field of up to 24 tesla. An overall critical current density slightly over 100 A/mm2 at 20 tesla and 63 A/mm2 at 24 tesla were observed at 1.9 K. An abrupt occurrence of the resistive state was seen below 18 tesla, suggesting that the region has local defects.

The potentials of Chevrel phase superconducting wires were enhanced by heat treating a monofilamentary wire under 2 kbar of argon pressure at 940 degrees centigrade for 1.5 hrs. Results showed that the irreversibility field increased from 3 T to 34.5 T at 4.2 K as observed from resistivity measurements in high magnetic fields. The improvements can be attributed to enhanced superconducting properties at the grain boundaries.
