A new, straightforward and versatile technique is proposed for studying more complex systems by extending classical 2D-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sequences into 3D-NMR experiments where the third dimension, created by the variation of the gradient strength, provided separation of mixtures of compounds according to their mobility and thus size. Variable strength pulse-field gradient defocusing-refocusing schemes can be successfully incorporated in many 2D pulse sequences.
