Abstract

The usefulness of cathodoluminescence in the study of modern biogenic carbonates was presented. This property is believed to be the result of post-depositional precipitation or recrystallization processes undergone by reefal carbonates. A contrary view was held by a group of scientists, stating that while recent biogenic carbonate skeletons exhibit luminescence it is not always a result of diagenesis and that such properties of modern animal skeletons reflect on the environmental conditions during the animals' lifespan.
