Wills (b), Susan Gregory (a), Julia Lawton (a) Keywords: Food; Teenagers; Parents; Weight; Socio-economic disadvantage; Scotland Abstract: This paper reports findings from a qualitative study which examined the perceptions and understandings underpinning the dietary practices in families with 'normal' weight and 'overweight' young teenagers living in poorer socio-economic circumstances. Thirty four parents/main food providers of boys and girls aged 13-14 years from socio-economically disadvantaged areas in Eastern Scotland were interviewed. Within the home there was a strong acknowledgement of these early teenagers' own food preferences; parents also saw them as having increasing responsibility for their own food choices outwith the home but these were often described as 'not healthy' choices. However, parents saw dietary issues as of fairly low priority in the hierarchy of health-relevant and other risks facing their teenagers. Equally, these interviewees felt that issues around body shape and size at this age were less potentially problematic than the risks to teenagers' mental or physical health of their becoming obsessed with weight loss. Parents often made sense of their teenager's body size and shape in terms of the variety of body types in families and inherited traits. Interviewees seemed to lack a discourse to understand weight and overweight in this age group, falling back on understandings derived from the adult lifestage. This paper deals with the ways in which young educated Israeli lesbians construct their bodies, disregarding the traditional categories based on binary criteria such as Butch/Femme. The 'lack of codes' is deconstructed in order to bring forward their complexity and their adherence to the postmodern era. The results, based on 50 in-depth interviews, point to the young lesbians' tendency to unify within their bodies two trends: one that allows the mingling of the male with the female body; and another that eliminates the option to choose to be either femme or butch. This study points to means of social control that assure the acceptance of the dressing code as well as bodily codes by the lesbian community. Their acceptance allows drawing boundaries not only between the lesbian and the heterosexual women but also between the young lesbians and the former generation of lesbians who lived out of the closet. Using multiple U.S. and European data sources, we show that observed physical attributes are related to participation in financial markets. Specifically, we find that individuals who are relatively tall and of normal weight are more likely to hold stocks in their financial portfolios. We consider several potential mechanisms that could drive the relation between physical attributes and portfolio decisions. We find that teenage social experiences as well as genetic and prenatal endowments that are fixed at birth are the two channels through which height affects financial decisions. Furthermore, we find that the relation between body mass index and portfolio decisions is largely driven by education and race. Cephalopods are a versatile group with several mechanisms in place to ensure the success of future generations. The Patagonian long-finned squid (Doryteuthis gahi) populations on the southern Patagonian shelf are believed to be genetically homogenous, but the mechanisms connecting them geographically and temporally are unresolved. Individual growth is highly variable within cephalopod populations and is likely to affect individual patterns of migration and, thus, population connectivity as a whole. Therefore, this study aimed to make inferences about population structure by analysing the size at which individuals were mature and aimed to describe the intrapopulation growth (allometric) trajectories of body shape, using landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques to describe phenotypes. Samples were collected from June 1999 to November 2017 around 52°S and 58°W. Smoothing curves from binomial generalised additive models (GAMs) suggested two size modes of maturity in females and one or multiple modes in males dependent on year and season. There was a gradual elongation of the mantle and an increase in the relative fin size throughout ontogeny. Shape scores from geometric morphometric shape coordinates revealed a continuous non-linear allometric trajectory with a significantly different slope angle for males exceeding 20.1 cm dorsal mantle length (DML). At the extreme of this continuum, the largest 'super-bull' form had a substantially more elongated body shape, a heavier fin and a larger fin area compared to the rest of the population, a body shape associated with enhanced swimming performance which may help to maintain population connectivity. The prevalence of these rare super-bulls in the fishery varied widely between years, suggestive of phenotypic plasticity. This study, based on sexual script theory, assessed ambivalence in the decision to have sexual intercourse for the first time in 687 adolescents. On average, adolescents showed moderate levels of ambivalence. Younger adolescents, students from the highest school track, adolescents with less positive body image, those with higher love attitudes, those who did not take the initiative to have intercourse, and those feeling pressured to have sex showed higher levels of ambivalence during their decisions. Higher levels of decisional ambivalence about having intercourse were associated with a later age at the time of first intercourse and with a lower probability of contraceptive use. Research with adults has shown a preference for average-weight female figures with waist-to-hip ratios (WHR) of 0.7, and average weight male figures with waist-to-hip ratios of 0.9. This study investigated the development of preferences for WHR sizes as well as preferences for specific body weights. Five-hundred eleven children ranging in age from 6 to 17 were presented with drawings of 12 male and 12 female silhouettes varying in weight and WHR and asked to select one they thought looked the nicest or most attractive. The youngest children showed preferences for the underweight figures, changing to consistent preferences for the average weight figures in the teenage years. The developmental curves for waist-to-hip ratio preferences were linear, changing gradually over time to become more adult-like.
