Cognitive remediation (CR) improves function in attention, social perception, concentrating, remembering, problem-solving, and planning. CR involves drill and practice exercises, using computer-aided activities or in a small group to develop and practice cognitive function (McGurk, Mueser, et al., 2007). The application of CR has been shown effective with disability populations including autism, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and head injury, especially for persons with limited social functioning, which has a considerable impact on work and other major life activity (Derntyl & Habel, 2011; Fernandez-Sotos et al., 2019; McDonald, 2017). The following article will examine social cognition and its role in neurocognitive processing relative to social functioning and communications, clinical assessment of primarily, persons with severe mental illness (SMI) who may require social cognition interventions, current cognitive remediation of social cognition in rehabilitation practice, and implications for the field. For the purposes of this article our focus will be on people with SMI, although there is growing evidence that CR will be effective with other disabling conditions. A multiple probe across participants design was used to examine the effects of intervention on reality-based fictional narratives. Four boys with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and language disorder, aged 9-10, participated in a 1:1 intervention targeting the narrative macrostructure elements of character, setting, problem, feelings, and fix. Intervention involved clinician modelling, participants saying the entire narrative, narrative stimulus pictures, and macrostructure icons. An intervention effect, maintenance, and generalization to fantasy-based fictional narratives were demonstrated for three participants. Social validity measures indicated that a naive observer-rated post-intervention narratives as better than pre-intervention narratives. This study adds to the limited research into narrative intervention with children with ASD and co-occurring language disorder. The highly structured and semi-scripted intervention could be adapted to be delivered by teachers in small groups in the classroom. Conducting a functional analysis is the 'gold standard' of behavior assessment with best practices recommending identification of idiosyncratic variables as essential to valid results. One potential variable that might impact assessment results is language of assessment. For individuals who operate in environments with multiple languages (e.g., English and Spanish), the language of assessment might differentially impact assessment results. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate if language of assessment affects identified function. The current study presents the results of 10 cases in which the experimenters conducted assessments (i.e., functional analysis) in both the Spanish and English language. Participants were nine children with autism who engaged in problem behavior and whose parents reported Spanish as the primary home language. Result indicates correspondence of function for eight of the ten cases. Children with autism spectrum disorder often lack fundamental play skills, which can aid development with social, language, and imitation skills (Boutot et al. 2005). The purpose of this study was to extend the previous literature that successfully combined video modeling and matrix training. Matrix training is an efficient way of teaching that encourages generalization without direct teaching of some skills. In this study, play actions were selected from a 2D, 6 x 6 matrix to teach pretend play skills to 3-5-year-old children with a diagnosis of ASD. Play actions were made up of different toy kitchen foods and play actions within a play kitchen setting (e.g., rinse the carrot and cut the pear). Using a multiple probe design across behaviors, the play actions were taught using video modeling and other play actions from the matrix were later assessed for recombinative generalization.
