The closure of schools, social hubs, and extracurricular activities due to lockdown measures imposed to curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2, has increased the risk factors for students' mental health. This cross-sectional study, conducted from March 2020 to March 2021, aimed to estimate socio-emotional, cognitive, and affective disorders and substance use in a sample of first- and second-grade high school students in Northern Italy. This study compared data from 284 Italian students' self-perceptions along with the perceptions of their parents and teachers through a web-based survey. The differences in the perceptions of the three groups (students, parents, and teachers) were analyzed using an analysis of variance test, applying a Bonferroni correction. The X[superscript 2] test was used to assess the comparison between students, parents, and teachers in the substance use questions. The results showed statistically significant differences among the three groups. The most important outcomes were sociality, scholastic performance, extracurricular activity, emotional symptoms, affective disorders (depression and anxiety), and substance use. These findings could be interesting for the promotion of mental health and prevention of psychopathological risks in students.

This paper draws draw on conceptualisations of language as heteroglossic to examine whether and how multilingual practices and plurilingual pedagogies are enacted as instructional strategies in two multilingual English-medium universities in western Canada. Multilingual educational contexts have the potential to comprise 'translanguaging spaces' [Li, W. (2018). Translanguaging as a practical theory of language. "Applied Linguistics," 39(1), 9-30. doi:10.1093/applin/amx039], wherein educators and students mobilise a range of semiotic resources for teaching and learning purposes. From a monolingual paradigm, such practice is often seen as interference or deficit; however, from a multilingual paradigm, this practice is seen as legitimate and unrestricted, with students free to use their linguistic resources as they wish to their own benefit. To conceptualise and analyse engagement with multilingual practice, we draw on Cenoz and Gorter's [(2017). Minority languages and sustainable translanguaging: Threat or opportunity? "Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development," 38(10), 901-912. doi:10.1080/01434632.2017.1284855] distinction between 'spontaneous' and 'intentional' translanguaging. To assist faculty to observe, act and reflect on implementation of plurilingual pedagogies, we propose a three-dimensional matrix comprising axes of (1) faculty- and student-initiated; (2) planned and spontaneous engagements with plurilingualism; and (3) plurilingualism as either a scaffold or a resource for curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

Research on first language, second language, and multilingual socialization has flourished over the past three decades in many formal and informal educational contexts around the world. One relatively recent site for such research, particularly for multilingual students learning English as an additional language, is post-secondary institutions where English is the medium of instruction. This article reviews research on this topic conducted at Canadian universities in particular, focusing both on students enrolled in short (one year or less) study-abroad programs and on those in full degree programs (undergraduate and graduate) whose goals may include improving their English language proficiency and their disciplinary knowledge in various fields. It highlights the changing theoretical understandings of language/literacy socialization processes based on a number of studies, in terms of students' trajectories, the interplay of students' (multiple) languages in their learning and performance, the various agents and directions of their socialization, acts of resistance versus compliance with established norms, and the role of peer support and social networks in their academic and social experiences, and ways of tracking these. In addition, the article notes the various methodological approaches that exist for studying issues related to language/literacy socialization and the units of analysis typically involved in this research.

The spread of integrated language and content approaches alongside with the move towards specificity in English for academic purposes (EAP) have increased expectations of interaction between language and subject-areas instructors. This, in turn has intensified the need to examine collaborations between these two groups. This information is necessary for institutions to be aware of the investments required to support such partnerships, and to assess and recognize the contributions that emerge out of these endeavors. This article focuses on the experiences of EAP and disciplinary instructors collaborating in the context of a first year undergraduate program designed to support the academic socialization and language development of international English language learners at a large western Canadian university. The participants were six EAP and thirteen disciplinary instructors working together over the course of an academic year. Drawing on data collected through semi-structured interviews, this qualitative study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the multiple factors that enable and sustain such collaborative efforts, and identifies a number of indicators that serve as evidence of positive collaborations. This article also includes recommendations for future research on this topic.

Trans and gender-independent clients, who often experience unnecessary pathologization when accessing mental health care, can benefit from art therapy because it offers practitioners and clients the unique potential to disrupt social hierarchies. Art therapy research, however, has often replicated social structures that oppress people from diverse gender backgrounds. I examine existing publications in art therapy and address the need to challenge social structures that have affected research and had a detrimental impact on the lives of trans and gender-independent clients.

This article introduces the notion of individual network of practice (INoP) as a viable construct for analyzing academic (discourse) socialization in second language (L2) contexts. The authors provide an overview of social practice theories that have informed the development of INoP--community of practice (CoP; Lave & Wenger, 1991; Wenger, 1998) and social network theory (Milroy, 1987)--and review relevant literature on academic discourse socialization and more general L2 learning studies that have used either CoP or social network as theoretical frameworks. Next, they illustrate how INoP was applied in a study that examined the academic English socialization of Mexican students at a Canadian university. Findings from the INoP analysis of three participants provide evidence of its rich potential for examining academic (discourse) socialization processes in other contexts and possibly using complementary forms of data analysis involving the analysis of interactional data. The authors suggest future applications of INoP in TESOL to help refine and validate this construct. Investigating the INoPs of other groups of English language learners in English-medium institutions will help scholars, educators, and students better understand the often unseen but vital social processes that mediate learning and consider ways of maximizing the potential of social networks and practices for their own educational purposes.

The study involved 14 volunteer facilitators, four UBC staff members, and the researcher as participant; the data collected were observation notes, questionnaires, results from focus groups, and interviews. The study revealed that the key strengths of the training workshop lay in its approach to training, its focus on confidence and capacity building, the appreciation and contribution of volunteers' assets, and the support of the sponsoring university. The article concludes with a consideration of the implications for strategic planning for university-community engagement and replication of the program in other educational contexts. This article examines the authors' experiences living action research through an art therapy activity known as YaYa that involved creating and sharing visual representations of themselves as beginning researchers. This activity was part of a graduate course on education action research and students in the course found the activity transformative. The article first explores how four students in the course created and presented their YaYas. It goes on to discuss how the activity provided opportunities for students to imagine and re-imagine authored identities in the figured worlds of teaching and research. The role that visual arts play in transforming consciousness is also used to help understand the powerful impact of the YaYa activity. The YaYa as a visual artistic process opened students up to meaning-making and reconstructing identities that involved not only the mind, but also the emotions, body and spirit. The authors claim that learning action research can itself be a process of action research, and that living such practice is about involving and imagining the whole self in multiple figured worlds.
