Much research has examined the association between precarious employment and wellbeing in adults, but little is known about this relationship in working students. Using a sample of 224 (M[subscript Age] 21 years; 68% female), we assessed self-perceptions of job precariousness across four domains (i.e., job insecurity, remuneration, conditions, flexibility) and tested the relationships between the four domains and student burnout, and whether these relationships could be explained sequentially by higher levels of job and financial strain and sleep disruption. Job insecurity alone related both directly and indirectly to burnout (via job and financial strain and poor sleep quality). Precariousness related to financial strain (insecurity, remuneration), job strain (insecurity, flexibility), and sleep quality (insecurity); financial and job strain related to sleep quality; and sleep quality related to burnout. By decomposing the job precariousness construct, the findings provide an improved understanding of how working in low quality, precarious jobs is related to student wellbeing. more...

Purpose: This study illuminates the assumption that internships facilitate labor market entry and answers the question of why internships have a positive effect on students' self-perceived employability. It is assumed that internships enable more positive employability perceptions by reducing career-entry worries -- the worries of not finding a suitable job or not being able to obtain a satisfactory career. Design/methodology/approach: A two-wave study among graduate students currently in an internship investigated these relationships. Data on career-entry worries, perceived employability and an evaluation of the internship were collected from 80 students (mean age: 24.6 years, 68% female) from various fields of study aiming at both bachelor's and master's degrees. Findings: The results showed that positively evaluated internships contributed to graduates' self-perceived employability by means of reduced career-entry worries over an eight-week period. Originality/value: By considering graduates' career-entry worries -- the perceived uncertainty about finding an "appropriate" career in the future -- the authors introduce a new concept to the career literature and show that these worries are significant in terms of self-assessed employability. more...

The high rates of training transfer failure that prevail still puzzle practitioners as well as researchers. The central aim of the present study is to analyze the relatively under-researched role of job dissatisfaction in the training transfer process. Specifically, we expect that job dissatisfaction would have a negative effect on transfer but that this effect would be buffered by the expectation of positive transfer consequences and motivation to transfer. To test these hypotheses, 220 participants in different training programs completed an online questionnaire 1 year after training. The results support our assumptions. They reveal that job dissatisfaction has a detrimental effect on training transfer, but that motivation to transfer and the expectation of positive transfer consequences have a buffering effect. The more motivated a person is towards transfer, the less negative is the effect of job dissatisfaction on actual transfer, but only if a person expects positive outcomes from transfer, such as acknowledgment or rewards.
