A sustainable transdisciplinary research network was established through a research practice partnership (RPP) between an urban farm, faculty and staff from a Historically Black College (HBC), and researchers at a medium-sized private university. We investigate student-worker resilience at this urban farm situated on the HBC campus, drawing on literature that explores tensions between informal learning environments and formal spaces, equitable food systems and farming systems, as well as the resilience of farm work, and which is grounded critical food systems education theory. Utilizing a participatory design approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews and deductively analyzed the data. The research questions guiding this paper are: (1) What topics of discussion are most important to the student-workers and staff working on an urban farm, (2) How do student-workers and college staff members perceive and experience resilience on an urban farm? We found that what participants on an urban farm discuss, relating to their experiences, include (1) how participants were eager to "engage" with the local community, (2) how participants demonstrated "resilience" while working on the urban farm, (3) how "power dynamics" played a pivotal role informing the direction of the urban farm, (4) how participants consider community "access" to healthy foods an important mission for the farm, (5) how the college acted as a power wielding entity, perpetuating its "privilege" over the farmers and the farm operations. These findings have the potential to enable community organizing spaces to promote resilience for their volunteers and workers, and for urban farms top partner with their community to promote the mission of increasing access to healthy and affordable food options.

This study aims to determine to what extent preschool teachers include traditional Turkish music within the scope of music activities and what is the effect of this music on children. The study which was designed as qualitative research. A total of 50 preschool teachers, 92% of whom are female (n=46) and 8% are male (n=4), constitute the participants of the study. In the study, "semistructured interview form" prepared by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. The obtained data were analyzed according to thematic analysis technique. The research findings were analyzed under four themes: "Likes and Use", "Teaching", "Developmental Contributions" and "Challenges and Solutions". As a result of the research, it was found that preschool teachers partially included traditional Turkish music in their music activities, they did not receive training on teaching traditional Turkish music during their undergraduate education, children had various difficulties in vocalizing traditional Turkish music, and traditional Turkish music had development areas such as cognitive, psychomotor and language skills on children. It has been concluded that it has positive effects on the development of cultural memory and cultural transmission.

Understanding executive functions (EFs) development is of high value to global developmental science. Recent calls for a more inclusive and equitable developmental science argue that tasks and questionnaires that are developed using only a subset of the population are not likely to be appropriate for EFs measurement in global contexts unless explicitly tested. Here, we examined a task commonly used to assess EFs in Western populations in a non-Western sample of Jordanian children. We used the Hearts and Flowers (HF) task to examine (a) its value for assessing EFs development in Jordanian children, and (b) whether task performance was associated with socioeconomic variables and parent report of academic achievement, internalizing, and externalizing behaviors measured with the Arabic Child Behavior Checklist. We report data from N = 93 5.5-8.5 year-old Jordanian children. We found the task to be valuable for distinguishing performance among EFs constructs (working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility) in this cohort. However, there were no age differences in EFs performance, nor any EFs-specific relationship to any of the parent-report measures of EFs-related constructs. Instead, EFs were related to paternal education and location of residence (Jordanian governorate). We discuss these findings in the context of the expansion of developmental science into global contexts and call for special consideration of measurement and generalizability biases in investigations with human subjects.

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the epistemic connections between three instructional coaches and a first-year in-service teacher during remote planning and debrief meetings. Prior evidence suggests that remote instructional coaching leads to better teaching practices and identifies the instructional coaching moves used to prompt teacher reflection. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, the authors utilized quantitative ethnography and epistemic network analysis (ENA) approaches to explore the epistemic frames of three remote university-based instructional coaches as they supported a first-year in-service teacher. Findings: Quantitative ENA findings shed light on the network connections between instructional coaches and teachers, as well as the epistemic frames observed during planning and debrief meetings. Additionally, the authors provide qualitative findings that complement and reinforce the quantitative results. Research limitations/implications: All data collection occurred via Zoom, and the class was in a hybrid modality, with some students attending class in person and some attending remotely via Zoom. This unique context could have impacted the epistemic connections surrounding technology and logistics. Practical implications: This study provides a practical codebook for use in future studies that explores instructional coaching. Findings from this study can be used to inform instructional coaching decisions. Originality/value: The ENA findings helped deepen the authors' understanding of how instructional coaches can support a first-year in-service teacher during planning and debrief meetings in several ways. Additionally, this study presents a unique context given the COVID-19 pandemic and the remote model of instructional coaching.

This article sheds light on criticism of the increasing degree of formalisation in collating and synthesising research findings in the systematic review format in education. A textual analysis of two systematic reviews produced by the Swedish Institute for Educational Research unpacks the significance of interaction between formalisation and professional judgement. The article also shows that there is a mismatch between the "front-stage" and "back-stage" of the review process. Interestingly, criticism is aimed at the ideal image of scholarly practice rather than the actual review process.

Emergency remote and hybrid instructional approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges to science teachers, including how to incorporate authentic, hands-on, and collaborative learning experiences via Zoom™ instruction. Through a school-university partnership, a first-year middle school science teacher, an assistant professor, and two doctoral students collaborated to support student learning despite the constraints imposed by COVID-19. The partners worked together to develop and adapt a six-lesson, integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) unit for use in a hybrid learning environment. In this article, we describe the unit, which focused on science concepts of force and motion through an engineering context related to helmet design. We highlight the key adaptations that were made to transition this unit to a hybrid format, including the assets brought by each partner. Finally, we discuss lessons learned and implications for teachers.

In this study, it is aimed to determine the effects of active learning activities on viola students' performance and motivation. One group pretest-posttest experimental design was used in the study. The study group consist of 10 students, 7 of them receiving Viola training within the scope of the Individual Instrument course at Gaziosmanpasa University Fine Arts Education Department Music Education Department and 3 students within the scope of Turkish and Western Music Instruments course at Tokat Fine Arts and Sports High School. During the eight-week practice, with the students in the study group, active learning-based activities which are prepared for the viola training were carried out with students in the study group. In the study, as a means of data collection, by adapting 'Exam Performance' dimension of 'Violin Lesson Performance Form' to the viola, the 'Motivation Scale' part of 'Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire' were used. According to the results of the study, it was determined that the activities based on active learning increased viola performance success, and influenced the students' motivation for viola lesson positively.

Background: Promotion of healthy behaviour is increasingly highlighted worldwide as a way to improve public health, prevent disease incidence, and decrease long-term costs for healthcare. In Sweden the National Board of Health and Welfare (NBHW) used the well-established format of national guidelines to facilitate a more widespread use of approaches for promotion of healthy lifestyle habits in healthcare. Aims and objectives: The aim of this case study was to explore the tensions between public health knowledge and the tenets of evidence-based medicine (EBM) in the creation of national guidelines on lifestyle habits. Methods: Based on data from interviews with guideline professionals and the collected documents of the national guidelines, we examine how NBHW negotiated the conflicts between public health knowledge and the format of national guidelines. An analytical model based on approaches from the sociology of standardisation is used to explore the ramifications of these negotiations. Findings: In line with findings in the sociology of standardisation, we show how conflicts between public health knowledge and the format of national guidelines result in both having to yield on certain points. This, we claim, results in compromise, but perhaps also compromised notions of validity and causality. Discussion and conclusion: This case offers important learning about the general compatibility of public health and currently dominant methods of EBM. Important crossroads are outlined, concerning how validity and causality are configured in public health guidelines and how these require extensive epistemological deliberation.

This paper presents results from using an asynchronous Web-based discussion forum coupled with an integrated student peer rating system as one component of an introductory Information Systems (IS) course with high enrollment (e.g. a class with over 100 students). There are two major issues with the typical introductory IS course: it covers too many topics, and it is difficult to engage students in active learning in a classroom environment due to large class sizes. To address these issues, an open source discussion forum was modified and used for topical discussion outside of the classroom. Students were allowed to participate in a discussion about topics of their choice and were encouraged to rate their peers' contribution in forum. Overall, students evaluated the online forum discussion positively and provided suggestions for improvement.

Pressure on evaluators has been investigated recently by surveys in the USA, the UK, Germany, and Switzerland. This study compares the results of those studies regarding pressure on evaluators in different countries. The findings suggest that independence of evaluations does not exist for many respondents. Moreover, the person who commissioned the evaluator for evaluation is identified by all studies as the primary influencing stakeholder in the evaluation process. In terms of differences, Germany seems to be more prone to pressure on evaluators. However, German evaluators do not show stronger tendencies to surrender to pressure than the other countries' respondents. We suggest that this pattern may be explained by the strong state tradition in Germany as opposed to the U.S. and Switzerland, in conjunction with evaluators' profession-based, principled resistance to such pressure.

With rising student demand, time-limited therapy is becoming the rule rather than the exception at college counseling centers today. While many have viewed this shift as an unwelcome intrusion, this article will examine how to embrace and capitalize on this new, compressed form. Rather than seeing it as a constraint, it will be argued that it provides an opportunity to be more poetic and musical about our work, allowing us to take more therapeutic risks, establish greater momentum, and increase the number and variety of transformative moments in our sessions. Emphasis will be placed on the lessons that poetry and music can teach with respects to deepening and enhancing relational psychotherapy with our students.

This article presents findings from a quasi-experimental evaluation of quality with a sample of 28 family child care providers in the All Our Kin Family Child Care Network, a staffed family child care network which offers a range of services including relationship-based intensive consultation, and 20 family child care providers who had no affiliation with All Our Kin. The All Our Kin Network providers had significantly higher scores on a measure of global quality and on a measure of adult-child interactions than the comparison group. The results suggest that network participation contributes to improved family child care quality and have implications for future quality improvement efforts.

In this article we describe and diagnose ailments suffered by the so-called "medical insurance decision-making support tool" that was published in 2007 as part of a major reform of the Swedish social insurance. Through document studies and interviews the guideline is analysed and compared with a reference case, a guideline within cardiology. Particular attention is paid to different types of objectivity and how they relate to the sick-listing guidelines and their uncertain, multi-professional, high-stakes or "post-normal" character. Conflicting concerns and probably unavoidable choices are found in the ambitions, formats, implementation mode and experts of the guidelines.

In this article, the authors state two arguments: first, that the four categories of context, politics, polity, and policy make an adequate framework for systematic review being both exhaustive and parsimonious; second, that the method of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is an appropriate methodical approach for gaining realistic results that are useful for political practice. Instead of providing unsatisfactory monocausal explanations, the approach identifies different combinations of conditions leading to a given outcome. The authors illustrate their points with a two-step multi-value QCA (mvQCA) of 17 transport policy cases in Switzerland. (Contains 2 figures, 3 tables and 3 notes.)

A model of coping with stress is proposed in which coping mediates the relationship among organizational stressors and personal characteristics, and job-related strains and organizational outcomes. Study results, based on a sample of professional salespeople, provide overall support for most of the hypothesized relationships among work-related stressors, personal characteristics, and coping styles. Findings also support the influence of emotion-focused coping on the psychological outcomes of emotional exhaustion and job-induced anxiety; which in turn are found to influence job satisfaction and intention to withdraw. While problem-focused coping had no effect on job-induced anxiety, problem-focused coping did effect emotional exhaustion, which in turn influences job satisfaction and intention to withdraw. Minor differences were found when the proposed model was applied to saleswomen versus salesmen. Overall, however, the model was robust across both genders. (Contains 3 tables and 2 figures.)

The authors examined the beliefs of 351 teacher candidates, from various levels of training, regarding the effectiveness of potential interventions for childhood disorders. They were primarily interested in participants' responses to three categories of interventions: (a) evidence-based, (b) controversial, and (c) primarily anecdotal. They found that the participants' endorsement levels across three types of disorders (autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD], and dyslexia) varied but not in a consistent manner, with only a few noticeable trends across interventions. Furthermore, respondents tended to endorse interventions, whether evidence-based or not, without admitted prior exposure to information about them. The results suggest that more attention should be paid to teaching critical evaluation skills as a part of preliminary training of future educators. The potential for practicing teachers, who often serve as a readily available consultant for parents of children with disabilities, to pass on misinformation poses a potential dilemma that should be addressed in teacher training programs. The psychometric integrity of the "Foreign Language Attitudes and Perceptions Survey" for college students was investigated. Two hundred and seventy-eight college students were administered a modified version of the survey (FLAPS-C). Internal consistency reliabilities, as determined by Cronbach's alpha, were 0.74, attitudes; 0.80, perceptions; and 0.86, combined. Test-retest reliability was equally robust (r = 0.83). Factor analytic data suggest a one-factor solution rather than two separate factors (i.e., attitudes and perceptions). Results provide preliminary support for the use of FLAPS-C as a measure of college students' attitudes and perceptions toward learning a foreign language. The FLAPS-C's potential utility for secondary and postsecondary special educators of at-risk students including those with learning disabilities is discussed. (Contains 2 tables.)

The dual system of vocational training, utilising both company training and vocational school attendance, is generally acknowledged to be a successful model for reducing youth unemployment. However, the decreasing number of training opportunities in countries with this system poses a crisis for the approach. One strategy for overcoming the problem involves offering incentives for companies to create new take-ups. The present study explores the necessary conditions for successfully influencing the number of training places through apprenticeship marketing. It does so following the realistic evaluation approach. A comparison of qualitative case studies of six projects demonstrates that context, in the sense of basic structural conditions and political sensibility, plays a role in the success of a project. However, even more important is the form of the project itself. This regards the behaviour of the actors involved (politics) as well as the choice of the measures (policy) and project organisation (polity). The study stresses the combined effects of these factors.

Due to increasing industry demand for personnel who work effectively in virtual/distributed teams, MIS students should undergo training to improve their awareness of and competence in virtual teamwork. This paper proposes a model for virtual teamwork training and describes the implementation of the model in a class where students were located in two separate geographical locations. Both survey and qualitative data suggests that the class increased students' awareness of and competence in virtual teamwork. Potential improvements to the course design are also discussed. Objectives: An extensive literature base exists for behavioral parent training; however, few studies have focused on training direct care staff at group home and residential facilities for children. This study was conducted to determine whether a behavioral staff training program consisting of classroom training and in-home feedback would improve staff interactions with children at two group foster care homes. Method: Staff at both homes were trained, and direct observation measures were obtained on positive and negative interactions and lack of interactions. A multiple-baseline design across homes was used to assess staff interaction behavior. Results: Increases in both positive interactions and tool use were observed in the treatment phase, as were decreases in negative interactions for both group homes. Conclusions: The results suggest that training direct care staff, including social workers, to use behavioral strategies change patterns of interaction, resulting in a greater likelihood of improved relationships between staff and children. Structural equation modeling was used to test the discriminant validity of three cognitions--thinking of quitting, intent to search, and intent to leave--in 242 sales workers. Results demonstrating a different relationship among the three cognitions were used to revise a 1977 model. (SK)
