This New Zealand study investigated employment attitudes and their relationship to mental health of 137 long-term unemployed people with disabilities. Results suggested that level of income support was not related to employment attitudes. People receiving the invalid's benefit had high levels of work commitment in contrast to those receiving accident compensation or unemployment benefits. (DB)

The Department of Rehabilitation Studies at Massey University (New Zealand) incorporates attitude-changing strategies during the students' first year in the program. These strategies involve personal contact with people with disabilities, provision of accurate information about disabilities, and simulation or role playing. Students' attitudes improved over the year and were more positive than attitudes of a control group of agricultural students. (DB)

This New Zealand study examined attitudes toward persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) via a survey of 35 people with SCI, 27 SCI rehabilitation workers, 16 outpatient hospital rehabilitation workers, and 37 people from the general population. Results were analyzed in terms of age, ethnic identity, gender, professional training, and amount of contact with people with disabilities. (Author/JDD)
