1. Learning and Teaching about Scholarly Communication: Findings from Graduate Students and Mentors

Abstract

Graduate students are increasingly expected to publish peer-reviewed scholarship during the course of their studies, yet predictable mentoring and education on academic publishing is not available to all graduate students. Although academic librarians are well positioned to offer such instruction, their efforts are not always informed by comprehensive investigations of what, and how, graduate students need to learn. This study used focus groups with graduate students and faculty mentors to explore strengths and gaps in current mentoring and learning practices, while also discovering and uncovering suggestions and opportunities for further development in education about scholarly publishing. Thematic analysis of the data revealed that current training and mentorship meet some, but not all, of students' needs and preferences. Future library instruction should employ a blended and compassionate approach to teaching about this complex topic, and this study offers a way forward as librarians-as-partners in scholarly communication.

3. Success of Students Screened as Twice-Exceptional as a Function of Major Selection and Academic Strength

Abstract

In this study, the success of 6,054 college students "screened" as twice-exceptional (2e; i.e., those with significantly discrepant math vs. reading scores on the ACT [formerly, American College Test] or SAT [formerly, Scholastic Aptitude Test]) was examined based on major selection and type of potential learning disability using a screening technique proposed by McCallum et al. There were no differences in high school grade point average, college grade point average, or first-year retention rates between students screened as 2e who had a major in line with their academic strength versus those who did not (p > 0.05). However, students screened as 2e based on an exceptionally high math score but a lower reading score yielded statistically significantly higher rates of retention (p < 0.05) than students screened as 2e with the reverse pattern of scores (i.e., gifted in reading with a potential learning disability in math). Implications for screening 2e students are discussed.

4. Visions of the Possible: Engaging with Librarians in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This article encourages thoughtful discussion on cross-disciplinary partnerships among those researchers, practitioners, and librarians engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Through personal experiences, examples from the literature, and the goal of meaningful collaboration, the authors describe four models of engagement with librarians in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. We propose that it is time for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and its practitioners to more fully engage with librarians because they bring complementary perspectives, powerful areas of expertise, and significant insights into students' learning experiences.

5. Alternating Treatments Designs: Interpretation Challenges and Design Solutions for Validating and Comparing Interventions

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and describe why alternating treatments design (ATD) researchers should consider employing a no-treatment series during the alternating treatments phase. To identify limitations associated with excluding this design element, we obtained examples of ATD studies published in five school psychology journals published over 10 years. Next we read, scored, and analyzed these articles with our primary focus being authors' isolated and comparative effectiveness conclusions. After taking into account authors' relative effectiveness conclusions, we describe why some isolated treatment effectiveness conclusions may not be warranted because threats to internal validity were not controlled. Also, we describe how including a no-treatment series during the alternating treatments phase can address these limitations by allowing researchers to assess and possibly rule out many threats to internal validity. Discussion focuses on how including this design element may increase the number of studies validating specific interventions, yield better relative effectiveness conclusions, and prevent researchers and consumers of research from concluding that an intervention was effective when observed changes were caused by uncontrolled threats to internal validity.

6. An Investigation of an Early College Entrance Program's Ability to Impact Intellectual and Social Development

Abstract

Self-reported perceptions of the impact of acceleration through an early college entrance program at the University of Iowa National Academy of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering (NAASE), revealed the program's contribution to students' overall development. Responses from a sample of 76-gifted participants to a 64-item survey offered insights about accelerated college-aged students' perceptions of their intellectual and social growth, peer and family relationships, leadership ability, happiness, and peer acceptance. Self-perceptions of NAASE program effectiveness were generally positive. Not all abilities or skills were perceived as equally impacted as a function of participation in the NAASE program. Results add to the growing literature explicating the effects of participation in an early college entrance program on the development and peer relationships of gifted students. Implications are discussed for further research.

7. Screening for Giftedness Using a Reading Curriculum Based Measure

Abstract

The psychometric integrity of a curriculum-based measure to screen for academic giftedness (Monitoring Instructional Responsiveness: Reading [MIR:R]) was evaluated by examining its ceiling, item gradient, and predictive capacity using 460 fourth grade students. Eighty fourth graders (17.39%) scored one standard deviation above the MIR:R mean. Ten fourth graders (2.17%) scored two or more standard deviations above the mean, indicating an adequate ceiling. Item gradients were sufficient, that is, one raw score change produced less than one-third of a standard deviation change in standard deviation units. The MIR:R accurately screened students who performed in the "advanced" range on an end-of-the-year measure (i.e., Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program [TCAP]). Results of a chi-square indicated that 78.3% were identified as non-gifted by both the TCAP and MIR:R and 5.9% were identified as gifted.

8. Academic Success of General Education College Students Compared to Those Screened as Twice-Exceptional and Gifted

Abstract

In this study, the high school and college GPAs of college students who were screened as twice-exceptional were compared to college students screened as gifted and average college students. From a sample of 32,741 college students, those screened as gifted earned significantly higher means than students screened as twice-exceptional (2e) and the general college population on both high school and college GPA (p < 0.05); students screened as 2e earned high school and college GPA means higher than those from the general college population (p < 0.05). No mean college GPA differences were found between students screened as 2e with STEM majors and those with non-STEM majors GPA (p > 0.05), but STEM majors had higher high school mean GPAs than those with non-STEM majors (p < 0.001). Additionally, 2e students screened as having a reading learning disability (LD) yielded higher mean high school and college GPAs than 2e students screened as having a math LD (p < 0.001). Implications for advising are discussed.

9. Bonus Rewards for Everyone: Enhancing Mathematics Performance with Supplemental Interdependent Group Contingencies

Abstract

Teachers regularly apply independent group-oriented contingencies (e.g., each student who scored above 89% gets a reward) which are designed to enhance students' academic performance and achievement. In some instances, these contingencies are ineffective with low performing students. Numerous researchers have demonstrated that applying interdependent group-oriented contingencies (e.g., the entire class receives extra free time if the class average exceeds 89%) can meaningfully enhance mathematics performance across students. Research designed to evaluate the application of interdependent group-oriented bonus rewards on students' independent mathematic performance will be described and analyzed. Recommendations for applying these procedures will be provided. These recommendations focus on research-based procedures and strategies designed to maximize the effectiveness of interdependent contingencies while minimizing the negative side effects associated with these procedures.

10. A Successful Formula for Middle School Inclusion: Collaboration, Time, and Administrative Support

Abstract

This report summarizes the results of a survey on attitudes toward inclusion, which was conducted in a middle school in a large school district in the Southeast. The survey was given prior to the beginning of the school year, and immediately prior to the implementation of full inclusion. Respondents were general and special educators, para-professionals, and administrators. Results of the survey revealed that, although the majority (98.2%) of respondents were willing to make needed instructional adaptations for their students with disabilities, most (76.8%) did not believe that most students with disabilities could be educated in regular education classrooms. Fewer than half (44.6%) indicated that inclusion was a desirable educational practice for regular education students, although a greater percent (57.9%) believed that inclusion was a desirable educational practice for special education students. Time was the most significant area of concern for respondents who indicated that they (a) did not have adequate time to consult with other teachers and specialists who were working with their students with disabilities, (b) lacked time to go to meetings pertaining to their students with disabilities, and (c) lacked time to undertake the responsibility to educate students with disabilities in regular classrooms. 11. Initiating the Use of GIS Technology in Wyoming Public Schools through In-Service Workshops.

Abstract

This paper reports the results of a 2-year study investigating the types of experiences and support necessary for in-service teachers to effectively integrate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in their teaching/learning environments. The complex nature of GIS software prompted the authors to ask whether GIS can be a useful tool in the classroom. In an effort to answer this question, workshops were conducted, assessed, and revised in an iterative process. Assessment measures included classroom observations, interviews, participation in Web-based discussions, and lesson plan analyses. Results include documentation and rationale for the evolution from an intensive multi-day workshop with follow-up classroom support to a three-part series of workshops distributed over a 6-month period with classroom support available. Qualitative analyses include excerpts from classroom observations, interviews, and lesson plans which contrast the level and type of use by teachers who participated in the in-services. Many of the 15 participants in the first workshop did not successfully integrate GIS into their classrooms settings. The large majority of participants in the last workshop were able to plan and implement lessons incorporating GIS in meaningful contexts. GIS is a tool that is being used extensively by researchers, scientists, and planners. Until recently it was not feasible for educators to use this spatial data resource because the cost of the software was prohibitive and the size of the data files was too large to load on the personal computers used in most school settings. Demand from public and private sectors, coupled with spiraling innovations in technology, have resulted in the recent introduction of software which can be used to manipulate spatial data on personal computers. Software companies such as Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) have produced software bundles for school systems at affordable educational prices. Educators who have had the opportunity to explore these resources are excited about the potential of these spatial data resources to enhance the achievement and conceptual understanding of students in content areas including geography, science, mathematics, art, and technology. Students can investigate real-world problems to understand concepts and patterns about such topics as climate, human usage patterns, and the earth as a system. These same patterns can serve as inspiration for art projects, and the software tools can allow multiple perspectives. Students can also take on the role of planners by querying the spatial data to help manage crop production, range management, county, and city planning. The purpose of this study is to develop effective professional development workshops in the use of GIS. This includes the support and information necessary for interested Wyoming teachers to use these resources in their classrooms to increase and enhance student achievement in areas of art, science, mathematics, geography, and technology. 12. Exploring Children's Spatial Visual Thinking in an HyperGami Environment.

Abstract

This study investigates children's spatial cognition in the microcomputer environment created by "HyperGami." Two categories of spatial cognition have been described: spatial visualization, which involves mentally rotating, manipulating and twisting two- and three-dimensional objects; and spatial orientation, which involves the ability to remain unconfused by changing orientations of spatial configurations. "HyperGami" is a computer application which allows students to design, decorate, explore, and manipulate a two-dimensional net made up of polygons and their associated three-dimensional solids. Subjects for this study were 12 sixth- through ninth-grade students in the University of Wyoming Laboratory School. Students were given pretests and posttests. Once a week for a period of 6 weeks, the subjects interacted individually with "HyperGami" for 1 hour. They were divided into three groups, each with different exploration exercises and different aims. In the first group, each subject made gains in their ability to recognize the nets of solids, which require spatial visualization ability. Results from the second group suggest that interaction with "HyperGami" may have helped the subjects improve their ability to visualize the solid from its two-dimensional net. No evidence was found in the third group to show that the hours spent interacting with HyperGami helped the children to count vertices, to count faces, or to identify faces after truncation of vertices. This article explains a professional development experience of fifth to twelfth grade teachers in using geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) technologies to enhance classroom teaching and learning environments. A key challenge faced by the developers was whether teachers would value the technology tools enough to warrant the time necessary to develop the skills for productive use of the technology. 14. Development and Evolution of an Interactive HRM Course: A Case Study

15. The Parental Bonding Experiences of Sex Offenders: A Comparison between Child Molesters and Rapists.

17. Computer Equipment and Curriculum Requirements for Quality Data Processing Instruction. Research and Development. Final Report.

Abstract

Analysis of the curriculum and hardware needs for data processing instruction in Iowa was undertaken in order to prepare a sample curriculum and equipment recommendations for instruction in postsecondary institutions, as well as suggestions for a K-12 computer literacy program. More than 60 publications on computer-related topics and K-12 computer literacy were reviewed to determine competency requirements for computer programmers and computer operators, as well as six dimensions of computer literacy. In addition, data were collected through visitations to recognized data processing education centers; a telephone survey of two-year colleges to examine the hardware being used in training programs; a mailed survey to employers of computer programmers and operators who had been enrolled in a community college program; and a telephone survey of placement officers at Iowa area schools with programming/operations departments. All four of the surveys indicated the following similar necessary characteristics: the need for current, relevant curricula in step with technology advances; the need for modern equipment used by the industry in the primary service area; the need for modern equipment used by the industry in the primary service area; the need for experience through field study, cooperative study, or other arrangements; and the need for various options for enrollees to satisfy their needs and to take advantage of the employment opportunities available. As a result of the study, a listing of required and optional topics as well as recommended non-computer course work for programmers and operators was proposed to aid postsecondary schools in building their curricula; and a list of proposed topics and hardware requirements for a K-12 computer literacy curriculum was developed. 18. Keyboarding Issues in Elementary Education: Some Research Findings.

Abstract

This paper explores the issue of how, when, and where to teach keyboarding at the elementary school level through a review of the keyboarding literature and descriptions of three studies conducted with fifth grade students in the laboratory school at the University of Wyoming. The literature review briefly summarizes findings on the following topics: (1) when keyboarding skills can be taught; (2) whether motor proficiency affects the ability to acquire keyboarding skills; (3) whether formal keyboarding instruction improves elementary students' keyboarding skills; (4) the effect of keyboarding on student achievement in other subject areas; and (5) the students' attitudes toward learning keyboard skills. The three studies conducted at the University School are then described. The first involved observation of students learning keyboarding with a personal typing book and progressing at their own rate. The second study compared the achievement of two groups learning keyboarding using the traditional typing text and individualized instruction; one group used Apple microcomputers and the other used typewriters. The third study investigated whether students who had completed a nine-week keyboarding class would produce longer stories using a computer than students who had no formal keyboarding instruction. It was found that elementary students showed positive attitudes toward keyboarding activities, learned to keyboard through formal instruction, and showed some improvements in language arts achievement as a result of participation in keyboarding activities. 19. Will the Integration of Media Projects into an Existing Language Arts Curriculum Affect Year-End Achievement? A Research Study.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of the integration of media projects into an existing language arts curriculum on the year-end achievement of fifth and sixth grade students at the University of Wyoming laboratory school. During their communication arts block of language arts, reading, and literature, each student completed a minimum of four projects involving slide tape, video, filmstrip, and super eight film. Production work groups of one to eight students planned their productions and wrote the accompanying scripts. Achievement for both the experimental and the control groups was measured by the Metropolitan Achievement Test (1978 edition). The experimental group showed a significant increase in both reading and language arts achievement test scores; however, only the medium reading achievement experimental group showed a statistically significant increase in reading scores. The added time required for the media projects did not require the elimination of existing objectives. The use of media projects increased student interest and motivation as observed by the teachers involved, and reluctant learners became involved in language activities, especially reading, writing, and speaking. It was concluded that students gained valuable technical knowledge about media and greater understanding of the communications process. Five references are listed. (LMM)

22. The Challenge Project: A Treatment Program Evaluation for Perpetrators of Child Sexual Abuse.

A British follow-up study of 25 convicted perpetrators of child abuse compared group and individual treatment outcomes. Results found some evidence for positive change in the group condition in terms of greater honesty in reporting normal and deviant sexual outlets, in addition to the improvement in attitudes toward women. 23. The Challenge Project: Perpetrators of Child Sexual Abuse in South East London.

This study collected a range of personal, offense-related, and psychometric data on 80 convicted child molesters and compared findings with those of other offender populations. 26. Needs for Integrating Career Education Services Within the Des Moines Area Community College District.

Abstract

The purpose of the planning study was to examine the career education needs of the Des Moines Area Community College District (DMACC), to develop a plan and timetable for implementing career education services for the district, and to present a study model to be used by local schools in assessing district needs. Analyses were made of the general population characteristics, the public and community college curriculums, enrollment trends, and financial resources. Tables display these data by county. Surveys of county high school students, administrators, and women yielded data addressed to a wide variety of needs assessment factors, such as special needs identification, manpower needs, student aspirations, student interests, and the needs of women. Assessment of the data resulted in the formation of a five-year plan for the integration of career education throughout the area district. The feasibility study, by blending needs assessment and resource variables, present a model for conducting a planning study. Appendixes include a project abstract, listings of the advisory committee personnel, the Area 11 school districts by counties, and schools participating in the student survey and number of respondents. Samples of the survey instruments and a brief description of a mobile career exploration center project are also appended. (NJ)

Abstract

An analysis of competencies practiced by seventeen health occupation groups was conducted to determine the extent to which commonality existed in job activities. (The groups include accredited records technician, aide/orderly, dental assistant, dental hygienist, dental lab technician, dietetic technician, licensed practical nurse, medical assistant, medical lab assistant, medical lab technician, nuclear medical technician, occupational therapist, operating room technician, orthopaedic physician's assistant, radiological technician, registered nurse, respiratory therapist.) Competencies for health occupations for which job entry preparation is available in community colleges were obtained from a literature review, professional associations, and health occupation education programs. The competencies from all sources were combined into a comprehensive single listing for distribution to a sample of 4,075 Iowa and upper midwest area health employees. Approximately 250 persons in each group were given the 720-item survey. They were asked to indicate the nature of each competency they practiced (skill or understanding), the frequency of practice, and the type of training needed to become proficient. The number of competencies common to all seventeen occupations was relatively small: twenty-five of a final 718 items. However, within smaller groups of occupations, extensive levels of common competencies existed. It was also found that a broad range of prior health occupations employment was reported by respondents for given occupations and that a diversity of responsibilities existed within selected occupational job titles. Recommendations drawn as a result of the study were that health occupation educators and instructional designers could utilize the findings to modify current delivery systems and emphasis on content.
