1. Synergistic Supervision Strategies of Mid-Level Professionals in Student Affairs

Abstract

This dissertation contributes to the body of knowledge about the utilization of synergistic supervision in practice and about the adult learning experiences reported by participants within the context of supervision. The research questions guiding this study are: (1) What are the synergistic practices of mid-level Student Affairs supervisors at a four-year public university?, and (2) What adult learning experiences do study participants report within the context of supervision? Using Winston and Creamer's (1997) Synergistic Supervision model as framework, data were brought to life through the narratives of the supervisors and supervisees participating in the study as they reflected on best practices for working together. Their adult learning experiences emerged through analysis of two sets of qualitative interviews and one workshop about synergistic supervision. 2. Information Seeking Research Needs Extension towards Tasks and Technology

Abstract

This paper discusses the research into information seeking and its directions at a general level. We approach this topic by analysis and argumentation based on past research in the domain. We begin by presenting a general model of information seeking and retrieval which is used to derive nine broad dimensions that are needed to analyze information seeking and retrieval. Past research is then contrasted with the dimensions and shown not to cover the dimensions sufficiently. Based on an analysis of the goals of information seeking research, and a view on human task performance augmentation, it is then shown that information seeking is intimately associated with, and dependent on, other aspects of work; tasks and technology included. This leads to a discussion on design and evaluation frameworks for information seeking and retrieval, based on which two action lines are proposed: information retrieval research needs extension toward more context and information seeking research needs extension towards tasks and technology.

16. User-Librarian Negotiations and Information Search Procedures in Public Libraries: Analysis of Verbal Protocols. Final Research Report.

Abstract

This study of negotiation processes between users and librarians in typical reference situations describes association patterns and search procedures in the information transfer process in terms of theoretical approaches, design, analysis, and findings. The thinking-aloud technique of cognitive psychology was adopted to the project, which involved exploratory recordings of communication and information searching, training 20 librarians and seven users in the technique, recording search processes of 13 librarians, and recording the communication and search procedures between three librarians and five users. Transcribing the recordings into protocols (text) included noting pauses, behavioral remarks, and materials used. Microanalysis of the protocols identified the relations between activities, thought processes, and information perceived by the subject during the problem solving process, while macroanalysis identified general problems in the search. Findings identify three basic mental attitudes which determine the nature of searches: open, fixed, and semi-fixed. Influence of knowledge structures on question negotiation processes and implications of the findings are also discussed. Eleven figures, four tables, and 67 sources are provided. (RBF)
