Abstract

Due to easy accessibility to the Internet and prevalence of programs for designing World Wide Web sites, a special education teacher may now create a Web site with little cost or trouble. Special education teachers may want to consider creating a Web site to inform parents and caregivers about classroom activities, invite participation in special projects, send and receive e-mail, or link to school or other sites. The Web site acts as a powerful communication tool for students and caregivers, and it expands the classroom into the larger community. This paper gives specific guidelines for steps in designing and publishing a Web site: planning; defining the purpose of the site; achieving clarity through use of fonts and color; being consistent within school or district guidelines; structuring an easy-to-navigate format; finding and using graphics; and getting help with creating the site. A checklist of 15 points to remember is included. An appendix lists 25 Web sites (some annotated) that provide free graphics, search engines, information on HTML (hypertext markup language), and software. (SAS)

2. Incidence of Behavior Disorders in Children in South Carolina: Teachers' Perceptions.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of behavior disordered children in selected elementary classrooms as perceived by the regular classroom teacher. Two hundred four elementary teachers categorized students according to their perceptions of the students' needs for special services. The categories were defined as mild, moderate, or severely behavior disordered. The data were analyzed by perceived disorder and by sex and race of the students. The results are discussed, and it was found that the total mean of children thought to require special services was sixteen percent. It was concluded that the needs of behavior disordered children are not being adequately met. Implications for teacher competencies and administrative arrangements are made. Changes in three areas are suggested: preservice teacher preparation, inservice teacher training, and the provision of self contained and resource classes for behavior disordered students. (FG)

3. Special Education Students as a High-Risk Group for Substance Abuse: Teachers' Perceptions.

Abstract

Examined views of special education teachers concerning whether their students were at risk for substance abuse. Completed questionnaires from 166 special education teachers revealed that most special education students were not receiving either regular or special programs in substance abuse prevention. Of respondents, 70 percent believed that their students were at high risk for substance abuse. (NB)

4. The Effects of Labels on Teachers' Perceptions of the Prevalence of Emotionally Disturbed Children and Youth.

Abstract

The study determined the effects of labels on teachers' perceptions of the prevalence of emotionally disturbed children and youth in the regular classroom. Results showed that the labels used did have an effect on teachers' perceptions toward the children, and teachers were more willing to apply the "behavior disordered" label. (Author/TLJ)
