This paper focuses on e-mentoring of novice mathematics teachers as professional development, and reports findings of the e-mentoring practices enriched with videos to improve noticing skills of novice teachers. A single group pre- and post-test study was conducted with the participation of 17 mentees, novice middle school mathematics teachers. Participants' noticing skills were assessed through a whole-class teaching video shown to them before and after the intervention. The responses of the teachers to the video assessment were analyzed considering attending, interpreting and decision-making dimensions of noticing. The results revealed that the e-mentoring program improved the novice mathematics teachers' noticing skills significantly in all dimensions.

This paper is a part of a broader study which aims to investigate mathematics teacher candidates' mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) by using the Turkish translated versions of TEDS-M (Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics) Primary and Secondary Released Items. The sample of the study comprised freshman (first year) and senior (fourth and fifth year) students from primary and secondary mathematics teacher education programs. Firstly, this study aimed to examine differences in MKT of teacher candidates at the beginning and at the end of their undergraduate education. For both departments, senior students had statistically significant higher scores than freshman students. Secondly, this study also aimed to examine participating Turkish preservice mathematics teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching by using international results of TEDS-M Study. Participating senior preservice teachers' correct response percentages were higher than international average in all domains except "data" in primary level, and "data", "mathematical modelling" and "symmetry" in secondary level. The common content domains where primary and secondary preservice teachers' percentages were lower than international average is "data". In this paper, these areas will be examined within the context of Turkish education.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has been an integral part of many countries' educational policies. In last decade, various practices have been implemented to make STEM areas valuable for 21st century generation. These actions require reconsideration of both pre- and in-service teacher education because those who touch students in and out of the class settings are the teachers. In this respect, this phenomenograhic study aimed to investigate how STEM conceptions of pre-service chemistry and mathematic teachers' (N = 38) evolve as they work together through a STEM module, Collaboratively Learning to Teach STEM (CLT-STEM), depicted by the posters they prepared in groups before and after the implementation. The posters were analyzed with respect to two aspects; conceptions of STEM as a whole, and conceptions of each STEM area individually. For the conceptions of STEM, the codes emerged from data were used; whereas for the conceptions of each STEM area, definitions of these areas were referred. The results of the analyses revealed that the STEM conceptions of the majority of pre-service chemistry and mathematics teachers improved from a lower to a higher level of conception. In terms of the conception of each STEM areas individually, pre-service teachers refined their conception of each area by representing less detail, rather a more comprehensive and integrated view. Therefore, this study may encourage implementing STEM education in preservice science and mathematics teacher education.

The purpose of this research is to examine preservice elementary school teachers' geometry learning as investigated by both qualitative and quantitative methods. For the qualitative investigation, narrative analysis and thematic analysis methods were used. The findings of narrative analysis indicated two main kinds of stories: as a learner and as a beginning teacher. The thematic analysis findings yield to three themes: history of learning geometry, perceptions about geometry, effective geometry instructional practices. The findings informed the quantitative investigation on geometry content knowledge for the case of quadrilaterals. During the second phase of the study, 102 participants who enrolled in the methods course completed pre and post test of teachers' geometry content knowledge. Treatment group participants (n = 54) received series of activities (geometry activities and student work analysis) focusing on quadrilaterals, and control group participants (n = 48) received traditional instruction. Repeated measures ANOVA results showed a significant change in treatment group participants' geometry content knowledge. The mixed ANOVA results indicated a significant main effect of knowledge but no significant interaction between geometry content knowledge and grouping. Even though treatment group participants' geometry content knowledge growth was significant, the difference between treatment group and control group participants' growth in geometry content knowledge was not significant. This study informs mathematics teacher education in three important areas; limited knowledge of preservice teachers' geometry content knowledge, integrating mathematics content and the context of teaching into methods course, and use of student work with preservice teachers.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between teacher efficacy to student trigonometry self-efficacy and student trigonometry achievement. The study included 16 high school teachers and their tenth grade students (n = 571). Teacher efficacy was studied in terms of general teaching efficacy, mathematics teaching efficacy, and trigonometry teaching efficacy. No significant relationship was found between general teaching efficacy or mathematics teaching efficacy and student-related variables. The t-test results show that students of teachers who had high trigonometry teaching efficacy got higher scores on the trigonometry self-efficacy scale, than students of teachers with low trigonometry teaching efficacy. Between these two groups of students' achievement test scores, on the other hand, no significant difference was found. The results underline the importance of teachers' trigonometry teaching efficacy for students' trigonometry self-efficacy, as well as the importance of measuring self-efficacy in a task-specific way.

This research study examined the effect of origami-based geometry instruction on spatial visualization, geometry achievement, and geometric reasoning of tenth-grade students in Turkey. The sample ("n" = 184) was chosen from a tenth-grade population of a public high school in Turkey. It was a quasi-experimental pretest/posttest design. A control group (94 students) received regular instruction during a geometry unit in a tenth-grade classroom whereas an experimental group (90 students) received origami-based instruction for 4 weeks. The Spatial Visualization Test (SVT) was used to measure students' spatial visualization ability in this study. The SVT consists of the Card Rotation Test, Cube Comparison Test, and the Paper Folding Test which were originally developed by Ekstrom, French, Harman & Derman (1976) and translated into Turkish by Delialioglu (1996). Besides, Geometry Achievement Test and Geometric Reasoning Test were developed by the researcher to measure geometry achievement level and geometric reasoning level of participants in key aspects of triangles. All tests had versions of pretest and posttest, and these tests were administered to both groups. A repeated-measures Analysis of Variance was used on each test scores to analyze data. The results indicated that origami-based instruction had significant effect on all dependent variables (spatial visualization, geometry achievement, and geometric reasoning). This suggested that origami might be integrated into high school geometry lessons to make geometry learning more effective.
