This submission contains the Proceedings of the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG), held at Laval University in Québec City, Québec. The CMESG is a group of mathematicians and mathematics educators who meet annually to discuss mathematics education issues at all levels of learning. Mathematical reasoning features in curriculum documents around the world, but is understood and enacted poorly by teachers in classrooms. We explore teachers' noticing of reasoning during observed lessons. Two teams of primary teachers in Canada and Australia worked to plan, deliver, and observe lessons intended to include reasoning. They observed each other teaching a lesson that was planned with the assistance of a researcher, and later, a researcher observed each post-lesson discussion. Given the reported benefits of teachers' noticing of reasoning during peer-observed lessons, targeted professional learning support is required to further enact teachers' peer discourse to facilitate mathematical reasoning.

The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) is an international, non-profit educational organization. The Association's purpose is to advance the knowledge, theory, and quality of teaching and learning at all levels with information technology. The "EdMedia + Innovate Learning" conference took place in New York, New York and online June 20-23, 2022. These proceedings include 180 papers, including 2 award papers. The award papers cover the topics of VALUE (Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education) rubrics and teacher candidates' acceptance and intentional use of augmented reality (AR) technology.

Using an innovative recruitment tool, the social network site Facebook, survey data were gathered from samples of the Australian general public and from around the world. Views on the gendering of mathematics, science, and ICT were gathered. In this paper we report the findings from six of the 15 questions on the survey, and only from respondents in predominantly English-speaking countries. The findings reveal that the majority was not gender-stereotyped about mathematics and related careers. However, if a gendered view was held, it was overwhelming to endorse the male stereotype. Male respondents' views were more strongly gendered than were females'. [For the complete proceedings, see ED585874.]

The Generic Skills project is a research study being conducted in Canada to determine those overt and covert behaviors which are fundamental to the performance of many tasks and sub-tasks performed in a wide range of occupations. Data aimed at determining the needs for adult education and training have been obtained in two surveys. In the first, 340 workers and their 340 supervisors in 27 different occupations answered questions related to mathematics and communications skills. In the second survey, 490 workers and 480 supervisors in 37 occupations, 18 of which were repeated from the first survey, completed questions related to mathematics, communications, interpersonal, and reasoning skills. From the data, certain core skill requirements for work performance appear evident. All occupations require reading and listening at least the literal level of comprehension--reading forms and writing words/phrases on forms. Most of the skills of one-to-one conversation are common requirements and all occupations require instructional communication, the ability to demonstrate and instruct. An experimental bilingual bicultural French language program for kindergarten students in a former French-speaking area of Western Newfoundland was initiated in an integrated primary school in September 1975. The experimental class of thirty students was taught entirely in French while the control group received twenty minutes of French per day during the year. Research controls and continuous evaluation were provided by a joint school district and university team. Intra-school district class comparisons of achievement indicated minor lags in cognitive skills for the experimental group. Evaluation results were positive and the program will be continued and expanded next year. (Author)

The papers in this document follow the order of the meeting and consist of two guest lecturers and reports from four working groups; two topic group presentations are noted but not included. One lecture, delivered by Peter Hilton, discusses the nature of mathematics today and implications for mathematics teaching, while, in the other paper, Stephen I. Brown explores the nature of problem generation in the mathematics curriculum. Working group reports concern statistical thinking, training in diagnosis and remediation for teachers, mathematics and language, and the influence of computer science on the undergraduate mathematics curriculum. Topic groups heard presentations by Daniel Kahneman on intuitions and fallacies in reasoning about probability and by Tom Kieren on mathematics curriculum development in Canada. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether gender accounts for student differences in performance and achievement in mathematics. Data for the study were drawn from the Second International Mathematics Study (SIMS) of seventh and eighth grade students from Japan, Belgium, Canada (British Columbia and Ontario), France, the United States, New Zealand, and Thailand. Students were tested on the same mathematical items and problems. Results indicated no substantial gender effects or differences in any of the mathematics content areas, problem types, or national origins. Other studies suggested that curricula, pedagogies, or cultural factors may interact with gender differences in impacting quantitative performance. Tables and 21 references are included. (JHP)

This study examines the relationship between the interactive influences of two environmental settings--the home and the school--and three measures of student growth--reading, mathematics, and self-esteem. Each setting was measured along three dimensions of influence--attitudinal, process, and structural. A three stage, multivariate regression analysis was used to examine the data from 1,660 Grade 5 students in 144 classrooms in southern Ontario. Results showed a significant relationship between the problem-solving subtest of mathematics and the interaction of the two settings. But for reading, self-esteem, and mathematics concepts, no evidence of interaction was shown between the home environment variables and the classroom environment variables. (Author)
