This study examines pre-service teachers' (PSTs') views of tasks that engage students in mathematical argumentation. Data were collected in two different mathematics courses for elementary school education majors (n = 51 total PSTs). Analyzed were (a) written journals in which PSTs defined tasks that promote student engagement in argumentation, (b) tasks PSTs posed to engage students in mathematical argumentation, and (c) accompanying explanations in which PSTs motivated tasks they posed. The analysis revealed that PSTs interpret tasks that foster argumentation in terms of activities of argumentation that a task elicits and space for argumentation that the task provides. Several features that PSTs associated with each of the two major task characteristics were identified. While posing tasks to engage students in argumentation, PSTs did not place equal emphasis on all of the identified features. [For the complete proceedings, see ED629884.]

The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) is an international, non-profit educational organization. The Association's purpose is to advance the knowledge, theory, and quality of teaching and learning at all levels with information technology. The "EdMedia + Innovate Learning" conference took place in New York, New York and online June 20-23, 2022. These proceedings include 180 papers, including 2 award papers. The award papers cover the topics of VALUE (Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education) rubrics and teacher candidates' acceptance and intentional use of augmented reality (AR) technology.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of Quick Response (QR) codes and mobile devices in the context of Finnish basic education. The feasibility was analyzed through a mobile learning framework, which includes the core characteristics of mobile learning. The study is part of a larger research where the aim is to develop a theoretical framework for mobile learning and mobile learning practices. QR codes were chosen in particular because teachers were interested in seeing how this relatively easy and versatile technology could be utilized in their classrooms. QR code implementations blended in and enriched the traditional teaching methods and classroom learning in a motivating and meaningful way. The core characteristics of mobile leaning were realized comparatively well. However, the study also indicated that the factors that should be added to the framework are the school curriculum, ICT integration strategies, teacher competencies, and technological, social and cultural change. This paper examines ten K-8 preservice teachers' visual representations of fraction operations using the four main pattern blocks. Data consist of figures made using the pattern blocks, drawn colored representations, and detailed written comments and algebraic formalism. The theoretical framework is drawn from representational theories and analyses of fraction operations, and work on coordination of different levels of units. The main result is that only those teachers meaningfully coordinating the different referent units in the fraction situations, were the ones consistent in their representations and reasoning, and in successfully establishing referential commutativity for multiplication of fractions. Using an innovative recruitment tool, the social network site Facebook, survey data were gathered from samples of the Australian general public and from around the world. Views on the gendering of mathematics, science, and ICT were gathered. In this paper we report the findings from six of the 15 questions on the survey, and only from respondents in predominantly English-speaking countries. The findings reveal that the majority was not gender-stereotyped about mathematics and related careers. However, if a gendered view was held, it was overwhelming to endorse the male stereotype. Male respondents' views were more strongly gendered than were females'. [For the complete proceedings, see ED585874.]

The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference intention was to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There had been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aimed to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference received 98 submissions from more than 24 countries. Out of the papers submitted, 29 were accepted as full papers. In addition to the presentation of full papers, short papers and reflection papers, the conference also includes a keynote presentation from internationally distinguished researchers. The Second International Conference on Educational Data Mining (EDM2009) was held at the University of Cordoba, Spain, on July 1-3, 2009. EDM brings together researchers from computer science, education, psychology, psychometrics, and statistics to analyze large data sets to answer educational research questions. The increase in instrumented educational software and databases of student test scores, has created large repositories of data reflecting how students learn. The EDM conference focuses on computational approaches for using those data to address important educational questions. The broad collection of research disciplines ensures cross fertilization of ideas, with the central questions of educational research serving as a unifying focus. The main aim of the Organisational Committee of the international scientific colloquium Mathematics and Children is to encourage additional scientific research in the field of mathematics teaching in Croatia. The development of science and education is a part of a long-term Education Sector Development Plan 2005-2010. Following the example of Europe and the rest of the world, special attention in the field of education is given to mathematical literacy of children (PISA programme) as well as to mathematics teacher training (quality insurance in higher education). Mathematics teaching in Croatia faces modified strategic, organizational, social and technical conditions. Introducing one-shift classes in primary schools, including children with special needs (talented ones and those with difficulties) in regular classes, extended day program for all students, two teachers per class, greater mobility of children and teachers in schools and new teaching technologies demand changes in the methodology of mathematical education of both children and future teachers of mathematics. It is important to develop a life-long learning programme for teachers of mathematics that includes doctoral studies. Research in the field of mathematics teaching implies multi- and interdisciplinarity. Therefore a cooperation with scientists outside the field of mathematics (psychologists, special-ed teachers, educators) is an imperative, although we strongly believe that improvements in mathematics teaching should be encouraged within the field of mathematics. A precondition for developing new approaches and methodologies in mathematics teaching in Croatia is a first-hand experience with the results of international research and standards in mathematics teaching and defining doctoral studies within the same field. We believe that the lectures, discussions and experience exchange between Croatian and international participants of the Mathematics and Children meeting will initiate and intensify scientific cooperation in the field of mathematics teaching on the international level. We would also like for this event to initiate the start of doctoral studies in the field of mathematics teaching in Croatia following the examples from Europe and worldwide. We are very grateful to numerous Croatian and international scientists who have recognized the importance of this event and managed to find the time to attend this gathering.
