Abstract

This book contains an edited transcription of the proceedings of the Conference on Teaching Creative Writing held at the Library of Congress in January 1973. Directors of the four pioneer writing programs in the United States presented papers and led the panel discussions. Panel members were distinguished graduates of or participants in these writing programs. The topics and directors of the four panels are "A Perspective of Academic Programs in Creative Writing" by Elliott Coleman, "The Writing of Poetry" by Paul Engle, "The Writing of Fiction" by Wallace Stegner, and "Nonfiction Prose" by John Ciardi. A list of publications on literature, based on lectures presented at the Library of Congress, is included. (JM)

Abstract

The rapid increase in the number of books published in the United States, especially during the past decade, has been the subject of much comment. Statistics are collected regularly by the trade papers, and these figures give the number of books for each year in each of several well-defined classes. There are at the present time 24 classes: as follows: (1) Philosophy; (2) Religion and theology; (3) Sociology and economics; (4) Military and naval science; (5) Law; (6) Education; (7) Philology; (8) Science; (9) Applied science, engineering; (10) Medicine, hygiene; (11) Agriculture; (12) Domestic economy; (13) Business; (14) Fine arts; (15) Music; (16) Games, amusements; (17) General literature, essays; (18) Poetry and drama; (19) Fiction; (20) Juvenile books; (21) History; (22) Geography and travel; (23) biography, genealogy; and (24) General works, miscellaneous. The charts included in this bulletin exhibit a block for each year from 1890 to 1916, both inclusive, and the figures in the middle of each block indicate the actual number of books published during the year. The figures in the upper part of each block give the number of reprints or new editions, and those in the lower part of the block indicate the number of books by foreign authors. 3. The New Journalism. The Underground Press, the Artists of Nonfiction, and Changes in the Established Media.

Abstract

The term "New Journalism" refers to a different style of journalistic writing which is based on a renewed commitment to principles of honesty and thoroughness and which encourages writers to exercise the freedom of a new subjective, creative, and candid style of reportage and commentary. The significance of New Journalism as a mode of public education and art is interpreted and explained in this book. The first two chapters offer an illustrative history of the underground press, including its growth and its cultural and social significance. Journalistic writing from the perspectives of various subcultures of America is also examined: the student revolution, black rationalism, rock culture, hippie culture, drug culture, and New Left politics. Presented next is a critical survey of New Journalism as a literary form with discussion of the styles of Tom Wolfe, Norman Mailer, and Truman Capote. Other New Journalists are described as ranging between two extremes: those who are transforming journalism into an art form and the New Muckrakers. They are considered under areas about which they have written--the general scene, the race and war scene, and the youth and radical scene. A discussion of changes in the journalistic attitudes of the established media and the future of New Journalism concludes the book. (Author/SH)
