E-tutorial learning aids as worked examples and hints have been established as effective instructional formats in problem-solving practices. However, less is known about variations in the use of learning aids across individuals at different stages in their learning process in student-centred learning contexts. This study investigates different profiles of students' learning behaviors based on clustering students' use of worked examples and hints in subsequent learning phases in a naturalistic setting. In a blended instructional format, the study was conducted on 1,072 students over an eight-week introductory mathematics course. By explicitly differentiating between learning to prepare a tutorial session, the first phase, learning to prepare a quiz session, the second phase, and learning to prepare the final exam as third phase, this study aims to contribute to the call for more temporality in learning analytics applications. Our study finds three profiles of learning that differ in the intensity and timing of the use of learning aids. Moreover, different profiles come with different learning dispositions, such as epistemic and activity learning emotions.

The search for rigor in learning analytics applications has placed survey data in the suspect's corner, favoring more objective trace data. A potential lack of objectivity in survey data is the existence of response styles, the tendency of respondents to answer survey items in a particular biased manner, such as yeah saying or always disagreeing. Making use of multiple survey instruments that exhibit similar types of response styles, our empirical study identifies response style bias by estimating the aggregate level of a set of response styles, amongst them the Acquiescence Response Style and the Dis-Acquiescence Response Style. We next demonstrate that trace variables are indeed bias-free in that their estimated response style components are small in size, accounting for minimal explained variation. Remarkably, course performance data is not bias-free, implying that predictive modelling for learning analytics purposes will, in general, profit from the inclusion of these bias components or apply survey data containing such response style bias to increase predictive power. Learning analytic models are built upon traces students leave in technology-enhanced learning platforms as the digital footprints of their learning processes. Learning analytics uses these traces of learning engagement to predict performance and provide learning feedback to students and teachers when these predictions signal the risk of failing a course, or even dropping-out. But not all of these trace variables act as stable and reliable predictors of course performance. In previous research, the authors concluded that trace variables of product type, such as mastery, do a better job than trace variables of process type, such as clicks or time-on-task, in predicting performance. In this study, we extend this analysis by focusing on learning gains rather than learning outcomes as the most important performance dimension. Distinguishing two different levels of initial proficiency, our empirical analysis into the learning of mathematics by first-year university students indicates that the lack of stability of the engagement types of process type is mainly explained by learning pattern found in students of high initial proficiency. For these students, high levels of engagement lead to lower, rather than higher, predicted learning outcomes. Amongst students with lower initial proficiency, higher levels of engagement play a different role. [For the complete proceedings, see ED608557.]

Personalizing learning with technology in secondary schools might be a way to diffuse innovations in both technology and education at the same time. In the current study, personalizing learning with technology is studied from three perspectives: teacher, learner and technology. Data about the implementation and evaluation of the interventions in school were gathered by interviews with teachers and students, teacher logbooks and teacher and student questionnaires. Moreover, test and questionnaire data were collected on achievement, school motivation and self-regulation of more than 4800 students. Effects of 35 personalizing learning interventions with mobile technology in 27 secondary schools in the Netherlands were examined. Generally, three types of personalizing learning interventions seem to increase student achievement: 1) a comprehensive approach across the school organization and programs; 2) personalizing learning with teachers differentiating either convergently or divergently, and 3) learner-control interventions in which students have control of surface aspects such as pacing, sequencing and practicing within limits set by teachers or programs. Too much emphasis on learner control instead of teacher control does not seem to benefit cognitive outcomes. The conclusions with respect to students' motivation and self-regulation are less clear-cut. [For the complete proceedings, see ED590271.]

MLEARN, a European Union (EU)-funded project, is exploring and promoting teacher development of mobile learning practices in four member states--the Netherlands, the United Kingdom (UK) (England), Greece and Italy. This paper details the ways research findings have both fed into and been elicited from this pilot, supporting development and implementation of a teacher education programme for in-service teachers, focusing on mobile learning through appropriate pedagogic uses of mobile or handheld technologies. The research has focused on three dimensions to date: how contextual backgrounds for the programme can be considered and provided; a training needs analysis of trainers and teachers involved in the pilot; and gathering initial outcomes from teachers and learners after involvement in teacher education events and some one to two months of pilot uses in classrooms. Government regulations require businesses to improve their processes and products/services in a green and sustainable manner. For being environmentally friendly, businesses should invest more on eco-innovation practices. Firms eco-innovate to promote eco-efficiency and sustainability. This paper evaluates the eco-innovation performance of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with data envelopment analysis (DEA). Data were gathered from the world bank database and global innovation index report. Findings show that for most OECD countries, energy use and ecological sustainability are more important than other inputs and outputs for enhancing eco-innovation. In this paper we present preliminary results on a study on the effect of instructional method (observational learning and learning by doing) and reflection (yes or no) on academic text quality and self-efficacy beliefs. 56 undergraduate students were assigned to either an observational learning or learning-by-doing condition, with or without reflection. The participants were tested on academic text quality, self-efficacy beliefs and satisfaction with the instructional method. Our preliminary results suggest that there is no main effect of instructional method on academic text quality and self-efficacy beliefs. Observational learning and learning by doing seem equally effective for learning how to write a large and complex writing assignment, even though participants who learned by doing were more satisfied with the method than participants who learned by observing models. We found no effect of reflection. However, there appears to be an interaction between instructional method and reflection: in observational learning reflection seems to have a negative effect on academic text quality while in learning by doing it appears to have a positive effect. The researchers analysed Pajek, one of the programs used for the processing and visualization of bibliographic and bibliometric data, within the framework of the implementation of IRNet research network project and activities, and presented several examples of visualisation. This empirical study aims to demonstrate how Dispositional Learning Analytics can contribute in the investigation of the effectiveness of didactical scenarios in authentic settings, where previous research has mostly been laboratory based. Using a showcase based on learning processes of 1080 students in a blended introductory quantitative course, we analyse the use of worked examples by students. Our method is to combine demographic and trace data from technology enhanced systems with self-reports of several contemporary social-cognitive theories. We find that the same maladaptive learning orientations that play a role in worked examples learning theories as to explain the effectiveness of worked examples do predict the use of worked examples: this time in the role of individual learning dispositions. Internet-based learning is increasingly applied in medical education, but its effect in the field of public health training is still unclear. This meta-analysis was undertaken to explore the impact of Internet-based learning on students'/professionals' knowledge of public health compared with no intervention and with traditional face-to-face (FTF) formats. Two reviewers independently searched Medline, Web of Science, ProQuest, Google scholar, ERIC and Elsevier databases for relevant studies between 1st January, 1990 and 30th December, 2016. Studies in English language providing information on educational outcomes after Internet-based training in public health courses compared with no-intervention or a pre-intervention assessment, or with FTF control group were retrieved, reviewed, and assessed according to the established inclusion/exclusion criteria in the current study. There were 16 eligible studies with 1183 participants in total. Heterogeneity in results was detected across studies. A random effects model was used to pool effect sizes for knowledge outcomes. The pooled effect size (standardized mean difference, SMD) in comparison to no intervention was 1.92 (95% CI: 1.05 to 2.78; P<0.0001), favoring Internet-based interventions. Compared with FTF formats, the pooled effect size was 0.39 (95% CI: -0.06 to 0.83; P = 0.09). The study suggested that Internet-based learning was superior to no-intervention in improving students'/professionals' public health knowledge. Compared with traditional FTF formats, Internet-based learning showed a similar effect. [For the complete proceedings, see ED579335.]

In this empirical study, we investigate the role of national cultural dimensions as distal antecedents of the use intensity of e-tutorials, which constitute the digital component within a blended learning course. Profiting from the context of a dispositional learning analytics application, we investigate cognitive processing strategies and metacognitive regulation strategies, motivation and engagement variables, and learning emotions as proximal antecedents of tool use and tool performance. We find that cultural diversity explains a substantial part of the variation in learning dispositions and tool use. The design of personalized learning paths will, therefore, profit from including national cultural dimensions as a relevant design factor. [For full proceedings, see ED571332.]

These proceedings contain the papers of the 13th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2016), October 28-30, 2016, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS), co-organized by the University of Mannheim, Germany, and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. This paper discusses three possible ways of applying podcasts in distance education: podcasts of recordings of virtual classes, podcasts produced for specific pedagogical aims, and podcasts produced by external organizations. Through a survey we gained insight in the (until now limited) experiences of our distant students with podcasts, and also in their preferences for future applications in education. Findings indicate that students prefer podcasts that can make them study as efficiently as possible, such as podcasts with explanations of hard topics, illustrations of subject matter and feedback on assignments. Recorded virtual classes and podcasts with elective subject matter are less popular. It is claimed in literature that podcasts in which students can see and hear their instructor can reduce feelings of isolation and increase feelings of connectedness. There are no indications that our students have a distinct preference for such podcasts. [For the full proceedings, see ED562127.]

The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference intention was to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There had been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aimed to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference received 98 submissions from more than 24 countries. Out of the papers submitted, 29 were accepted as full papers. In addition to the presentation of full papers, short papers and reflection papers, the conference also includes a keynote presentation from internationally distinguished researchers. Individual papers contain figures, tables, and references.
