This work aims to present and discuss results of research about the perception of researchers regarding the deposit of scientific production in open access institutional repositories. The results presented compose results of a larger research whose purpose was to propose guidelines for the deposit of scientific production in open access institutional repositories based on the perception of the different actors that participate in the scholarly communication system. From the methodological point of view, the study has a descriptive purpose and a qualitative methodological approach, since the proposal of the guidelines was based on the perceptions of the actors involved. As a research method, the survey was adopted, which was operationalized with the adoption of the semistructured interview technique. Among the conclusions, the main motivations for depositing scientific production in institutional repositories are diversified according to the areas of knowledge. Among them are the awareness of the benefits of open access, compulsory deposit, institutional incentives and the link to culturally deposit-prone disciplines.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model to illustrate factors influencing research data communication on diseases caused by the Zika virus. Design/methodology/approach – The grounded theory methodology was adopted. For data collection, interviews were conducted with 13 Brazilian researchers involved with the Zika virus theme. Data analysis was performed using the open, axial and selective coding processes, according to the principles of the grounded theory. Findings – Based on data collection and analysis, seven theoretical categories representing intervening factors in Zika virus research data communication were identified. The emerging theory showed the centrality of researchers’ expectations for acknowledgment and reward, influenced by the aspects of research funding and academic culture. Three factors involved in the macro processes of research data communication: data use, data production and data sharing. In the use and production processes, factors related to collaboration figured most strongly. In the production and sharing processes, the factors regarding data processing and the use of research data repositories were more pronounced. Finally, data sharing, and the possibility of reusing data are directly affected by the social context of Zika virus disease as an emerging disease. Originality/value – The study presents a theory developed systematically to explain the phenomenon of communication of research data on Zika virus. The theory presents a set of intervening factors of the process of communication of research data and discusses the factors in light of the fundamentals of information science

In 2012, the Open Access Movement to scientific information celebrated ten years of existence. The period, which represents the first stage of consolidation of the movement, has been analyzed to allow the planning of new phases. With the purpose of providing tools and contributing to these discussions, the article addresses the historical aspects of the international and regional constitution of Open Access Movement. The approach was developed from a descriptive temporal narrative of the main events and initiatives identified in the scientific literature on the subject. The elements discussed in the present study work were organized under two parameters. The first refers to a temporal perspective, defined from the publication of Budapest Open Access Initiative. The second is related to brief discussion of the participation of Latin America. As result, we present a timeline of open access in the world and in Latin America, showing the main aspects covered in the study. The goal of the study is achieved by the proposed systematization as we analyze the open access initiatives in Latin America and establish how they influenced and were influenced by other regions of the world.

Conceptual relationships amongst information communication, information management and knowledge management are discussed, with the aim of presenting a theoretical framework of these topics within the scope of information science. The discussion resulted from both the analysis of the literature and authors’ reflexions upon readings and previous research works. Therefore, the article discusses epistemological aspects of information science as regard these issues. In this context, the interdisciplinary focus of the discussion allows approaching seminal authors from both information science and communication science, as well as authors from information and knowledge management. Throughout the discussion, models that illustrate approaches from the most relevant authors and researchers’ theoretical constructions that show crucial conceptual relationships amongst the topics covered are presented. It is concluded that an approach which takes into account these relationships should be privileged in information science. It requires, in turn, the adoption of an associated approach of communication and management in different contexts. That is, communication and management studies in information science should take into account their conceptual overlaps, in the extent to which these are concepts whose approaches tend to be strongly associated in the area.

This article, product of theoretical research, has as goal to signal the theoretical similarities between the approaches to knowledge management and to scientific communication. The clarification of the convergence points between such approaches is justified by the necessity of conceptual foundation for the studies on scientific knowledge management in the academic environment, since the specialized literature until the present moment seems not to consider the specificities within this context, or even the characteristics of the production and the communication of this type of knowledge. These reflections consider initially, the communication and knowledge management from the point of view of the enterprise organizations, preparing a theoretical model that illustrates the relationship between communication, culture and knowledge management. In a second moment, on the basis of theoretical reflections, it directs the discussion to the academic environment, considering, in the model, the scientific communication, the scientific culture and the knowledge management. After that, it explores the similarities between knowledge management and the scientific communication, based on a comparison between the processes involved in both approaches. The conclusion points out to the processes of scientific communication as an essential and indispensable layer to the management of scientific knowledge within the university context.

The international articulations in favor of open access (OA) emphasize the institutional repositories (IRs) as an efficient strategy for the institutional scholarly information management. However, despite the wide adhesion of the strategy, the development of IRs have followed divergent goals and practices. Bearing in mind the conceptual controversy, the study investigated the elements that are necessary to conceptualize and analyze the IRs. For this, we conducted a Systematic Literature Review on the most cited papers about the subject in the databases Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar. As a result of analysis, was proposed a definition for the concept of IRs in the context of OA and two analysis tools. The first is a set of essential features for the categorization of an information system as IRs. The second is the systematization of eight dimensions of analysis. The three contributions compose the model to evaluation of IRs.

This article presents the experience of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) – a large state-owned company that plays an important global role in research, development, and innovation for tropical agriculture – in the planning and implementation of Open Access to scientific information in the context of a developing country. The aim of this initiative is to provide the necessary mechanisms to capture, store, organize, preserve, retrieve, and widely disseminate the scientific information produced by Embrapa and by agricultural research communities. This report concludes with a discussion of the obstacles encountered and the organizational features, cultural considerations, and political matters that facilitate open access implementation at Embrapa

This work is about digital preservation and the open access to scientific information movement. Specifically about the paradigm change motivated on the provision of access and archiving in the authors’ original institution. Shows that the long term preservation as well as the self-archiving in institutional and subject repositories are just two of the several requirements for the open access. From the open access view those requirements don’t need to come together, because there is the risk to push forward the main concept (open access without restrictions) and to delayed its implementation, putting conditions to the success of the main objectives of the open access. The solution suggested is the building of digital repositories outside of the control of the editors and the commercial data base providers dedicated to the preservation of all kinds of scientific publications.

This paper presents the efforts undertaken by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation regarding Science and Technology information management, through one of its Decentralized Units, Embrapa Technological Information (Scientific and Technological Information Service', SCT). The major aim of SCT is to promote and improve the processes of scientific communication - information that feeds and that results from research activities - and of science and technology dissemination - information that results from research activities and that is directed to the general public

This article explores the question of the tacit knowledge in the context of science. It highlights, initially, the tacit dimension of the production and the scientific knowledge. Through of interviews it searched to get the perception of researchers from different subject areas about: processes of acquisition of the knowledge and experience, sharing of the scientific knowledge, scientific knowledge explicitation, the technologies in the sharing of the scientific knowledge and others. It concludes with the elaboration of a systematization on the dynamics of the tacit and explicit scientific knowledge in the research and the scientific communication

This essay focuses on the scientific communication transformations within the Information Science in Brazil, particularly those related to open access to digitaljournals and repositories. It is aimed to describe the characteristics of the openaccess Library and Information Science journals. The present context of Brazilianpublications was examined collecting data through a survey procedure. Resultsshowed that Brazilian scientific community is motivated in getting into the newscientific communication paradigm.

Universities have, traditionally, been recognised as the loci of scientific knowledge production and transfer. Although it has been possible to find studies on knowledge management within the university context in the specialised literature, these studies usually deal with the scientific knowledge in the same perspective of the organisational knowledge. However, the scientific knowledge and the environment where it is created, shared and used are peculiar. In this sense, institutional repositories appear as an alternative to both the speed up of the scholarly communication process up and the scientific knowledge management (SKM). This paper therefore discusses the adequacy and applicability of institutional repositories as tool to the scientific knowledge management.
