Background and purpose: Aphthous and oral ulcers are the most common ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa, presenting as painful sores on the oral or tongue mucous membranes that make eating and drinking difficult. Zataria multiflora Boiss. has demonstrated therapeutic potential and has been used in formulations such as Protact® mouthwash. Recent studies indicate that this plant possesses several therapeutic effects, including alleviating inflammation and promoting healing in oral, digestive, and skin wounds. Given the documented effectiveness of this plant in treating various types of oral wounds and inflammation, along with the availability of Protact® mouthwash in pharmacies nationwide, this study aims to evaluate patient and physician satisfaction with the efficacy of Protact® mouthwash for treating oral ulcers and aphthous ulcers in Sari and Babol, the two largest cities by population in Mazandaran province. Materials and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included a sample of 75 individuals, consisting of 35 physicians and 40 patients from Sari and Babol who either prescribed or used Protact® mouthwash. A convenience sampling method was used, with participants selected based on their willingness to complete a checklist. Data were collected by trained interviewers visiting medical centers, physician clinics, and pharmacies, and inviting participants to complete the checklist. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (M ± SD), percentages, median, minimum, and maximum values. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-squared, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, and independent t-tests. Results: The majority of participants in both groups were men (patients: 52.5%, or 21 out of 40; physicians: 94.3%, or 33 out of 35). The mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum ages for physicians were 53.94, 56, 7.6, 40, and 68 years, respectively, while those for patients were 40.13, 42, 10.8, 18, and 63 years, respectively. Most patients in this study (75%) reported a high level of satisfaction after using Protact® mouthwash. This mouthwash was mainly used for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis and oral inflammation, with a frequency of 52.5%. Results from the physicians' checklists showed that Protact® mouthwash was most frequently prescribed by dentists (42.9%), followed by general practitioners, hematologists and oncologists, and radiologists (each with a frequency of 11.4%). Additionally, physicians expressed satisfaction with the healing progress in their patients. Conclusion: The findings support the effectiveness of Protact® mouthwash, a natural product produced in Iran, for the prevention and treatment of oral cavity-related conditions. The efficacy of this product is likely attributed to the presence of major phytochemicals in Zataria multiflora extract and essential oil, including thymol and carvacrol, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissue-regenerative properties beneficial to mucosal and skin healing.

Lakes play a vital role in water conservation, biodiversity, tourism and job creation. However, seasonal changes, inflow of sewage and erosion increase the amount of nutrients discharged into the lakes and affect the structure of the ecosystem and the diversity of its planktons through the reduction of water quality. The purpose of this study was to identify the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in Karon-4 lake to investigate the trophic indicators and water quality of this lake. For this purpose, after identifying 4 stations, sampling was done in 4 stages during 2017. Based on the results, 30 species of phytoplankton (belonging to 7 groups) and 58 species of zooplankton (belonging to 7 groups) were identified. The highest density of phytoplankton was observed in late summer and autumn, indicated the high values of soluble oxygen of the lake in these seasons beacause of increased photosynthetic activities. Most of the observed zooplankton species were also in the spring season and related to Copepoda, Rotifer and Cladocer. The average Shannon-Wiener and Margalf indices for phyto and zooplanktons indicated the improvement of living conditions and the possibility of the presence of more diverse species of zooplanktons due to the development of phytoplanktons in this lake. Therefore, in order to prevent algal bloom, in addition to controlling external factors (entry of various pollutants), attention should also be paid to internal conditions governing this dam. The life cycle of barnacles usually consists of two stages: the free-swimming larval stage and the stationary stage. Their larval stage has 6 stages. Considering that plant essential oils showed anti-algae properties in previous studies, in this study, the toxicity of this essential oil was investigated on different stages of barnacle larvae of A. amphitrite species. Because they should not have a negative effect on the food chain. Also, in order to evaluate the toxicity effects of Z. multiflora essential oil on barnacle larvae as a study model. This test was performed based on the determination of LC50 in a 24-hour period on different stages of barnacle larvae, in such a way that in 24-well plates of each stock, 6 concentrations of 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.125, 1.5 µg/ml was prepared, then 1 ml of sea water and 10 barnacle larvae were added to each well and the number of dead and alive was checked by loupe. The obtained results showed that the LC50-14.198 µg/ml in the (VI ( stage of and the LC50-36.91 µg/ml in the) II( stage have a significant difference. Also, this plant essential oil showed a toxic effect on barnacle larvae at concentrations higher than 20 g/ml. But in general, the use of this herbal essential oil has significant biological activity due to having carvacrol as the main component of the essential oil. Also, by having different compounds such as phenolic, terpenoids and alkaloids, it can be a pioneer in the development of practical and bio-compatible with eco-management goals in low concentrations.

Abstract Background Zataria multiflora Boiss. is a medicinal and aromatic plant from the Lamiaceae family. It is extensively used in Iranian traditional medicine, mostly as a replacement for Thyme species. This study was focused on the analysis of chemical composition and the distribution and types of trichomes of Z. multiflora grown under different conditions. Equilibrium headspace analysis in combination with GC-FID-MS was used to identify volatile compounds released by aerial parts of Z. multiflora in development stages of 50 and 100% flowering under normal and drought-stress conditions. Results The main constituents were p-cymene (20.06–27.40%), γ-terpinene (12.44–16.93%), and α-pinene (6.91–16.58%) and thymol (8.52–9.99%). The highest content of p-cymene (27.40%) and thymol (9.99%) was observed in the 50% flowering stage at the 90% field capacity, while the maximum γ-terpinene (16.93%) content was recorded in the 100% flowering stage under normal conditions. Using the SEM method, it was found that peltate glandular and non-glandular trichomes are distributed on the surface of the leaf, stem, and outer side of the calyx. However, capitate trichomes only are detected on the stem and calyx in the 100% flowering and beginning of blooming stages, respectively. The type and structure of trichomes do not vary in different development stages, but they differ in density. The highest number of leaf peltate glandular trichomes was observed in the vegetative and beginning of blooming stages at 50% and 90% field capacity, respectively. Non-glandular trichomes of the stem were observed with high density in both normal and stress conditions, which are more densely in 90% field capacity. Conclusions Since this plant has strong potential to be used in the food and pharmacological industries, this study provides valuable information for its cultivation and harvesting at specific phenological stages, depending on desired compounds and their concentrations.

Abstract Aims Thymus plant is a very useful herbal medicine with various properties such as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Therefore, the properties of this plant have made this drug a suitable candidate for wound healing. In this study, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) gel containing Zataria multiflora volatile oil nanoemulsion (neZM) along with polycaprolactone/chitosan (PCL-CS) nanofibrous scaffold was used, and the effect of three experimental groups on the wound healing process was evaluated. The first group, HPMC gel containing neZM, the second group, PCL-CS nanofibers, and the third group, HPMC gel containing neZM and bandaged with PCL-CS nanofibers (PCL-CS/neZM). Wounds bandaged with common sterile gas were considered as control. Methods The nanoemulsion was synthesized by a spontaneous method and loaded into a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) gel. The DLS test investigated the size of these nanoemulsions. A PCL-CS nanofibrous scaffold was also synthesized by electrospinning method then SEM and contact angle tests investigated morphology and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of its surface. The animal study was performed on full-thickness skin wounds in rats, and the process of tissue regeneration in the experimental and control groups was evaluated by H&E and Masson's trichrome staining. Results The results showed that the nanoemulsion has a size of 225±9 nm and has an acceptable dispersion. The PCL-CS nanofibers synthesized by the electrospinning method also show non-beaded smooth fibers and due to the presence of chitosan with hydrophilic properties, have higher surface hydrophobicity than PCL fibers. The wound healing results show that the PCL-CS/neZM group significantly reduced the wound size compared to the other groups on the 7th, 14th, and 21st days. The histological results also show that the PCL-CS/neZM group could significantly reduce the parameters of edema, inflammation, and vascularity and increase the parameters of fibrosis, re-epithelialization, and collagen deposition compared to other groups on day 21. Conclusion The results of this study show that the PCL-CS/neZM treatment can effectively improve wound healing.

Purpose: The increasing resistance to onychomycosis treatment globally is a major concern as it results in treatment failures. This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of incorporating nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) in a gel formulation for treating mild to moderate Candida-associated onychomycosis using Zataria multiflora (Zt) essential oils. Methods: The characteristics of Zataria multiflora-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (Zt-NLCs) were validated using a carbopol gel (1 % w/w). In vitro tests were conducted using CLSI M60 standards to evaluate the susceptibility of ten commonly encountered dermatophyte species to antifungal agents. A clinical study was conducted involving 40 volunteers randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving the Zt-NLCs gel and the other receiving a placebo, using a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. The objective was to assess clinical manifestations and mycological findings after topical application for 2 and 4 weeks. The causative agents' species were identified using a PCR-RFLP method. Results: The preparation of Zt-NLCs gel resulted in a uniform suspension of spherical nanoparticles with favourable characteristics and no cytotoxic effects. Nowadays if essential oils can remain stable in food processing conditions, they can be used as an alternative to synthetic preservatives in food products. In this research, in addition to investigating the compounds of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the antimicrobial properties of two essential oils before and after heat treatment (200 °C; 10 min) against Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger were evaluated. Based on the obtained results, the thermal process did not significantly affect the main compounds of the essential oils. Cinnamaldehyde and eugenol were the main constituents of cinnamon essential oil, while phenolic compounds (thymol and carvacrol) made up 61.5% of Z. multiflora essential oil. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils against Aspergillus niger were 250 and 4000 µL/mL, respectively, while the minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) were 250 and 16,000 µL/mL, respectively. Against Bucillus subtilis, the MIC and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) values were 7.8 and 15.6 µL/mL for Z. multiflora, and 16,000 and 32,000 µL/mL for cinnamon, respectively. The inhibition zones of heated Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils were 20.5 and 16.05 mm against A. niger and 29.00 and 17.00 mm against B. subtilis, respectively. In general, the results demonstrated that the thermal process did not significantly affect the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils, meaning that they are suitable for use as antimicrobial agents in products that undergo thermal processing.

Objective: Liver is an important player in regulation of body homeostasis. Study investigated the effects of hydro-alcohol extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM) on oxidative damage, level of IL-6 and enzymes of liver in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rats.Materials and Methods: The rats were distributed into 5 groups: 1) Control; 2) LPS; and 3-5) ZM-Extract (Ext) 50, ZM-Ext 100, and ZM-Ext 200. ZM-Ext groups received 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of extract 30 min before LPS. Drugs were injected intraperitoneally. The entire period of this project was 17 days. In first three days, only extract was injected and then, ZM was injected along with LPS.Results: LPS increased the level of ALT (Alanine aminotransferase), AST (Aspartate aminotransferase ), ALK-P (Alkaline Phosphatase), IL-6, malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) metabolites and lowered thiol, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) concentration. ZM extract not only reduced ALT, AST, ALK-P, IL-6, MDA, and NO metabolites concentrations but also increased thiol content, and SOD and CAT levels.Conclusion: Extract of ZM prevented LPS-induced hepatotoxicity. This protective effect was associated with reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress.

Background and Objective: Exercise training and Zataria multiflora have a positive effect on health and can modulate cardiovascular risk factors. Adipose tissue-derived factors such as ANGPTL8 and adhesive molecules play an important role in exerting the pathological effects of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of resistance-endurance exercise training combined with Zataria multiflora ingestion on the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 in sedentary overweight and obese men. Methods: In this clinical trial study, 40 sedentary overweight and obese men (with an average body mass index of 28.41±1.75 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to four groups with 10 subjects each. The groups included placebo, Zataria multiflora, training, and training + Zataria multiflora. The exercise training was combined training consisting of resistance-endurance exercise, conducted three times per week over eight weeks. Zataria multiflora supplement consumption was set at 500 mg daily. Blood sampling was conducted before and after the eight-week intervention, and the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 were measured using the ELISA method. Zataria multiflora Boiss is a perennial plant with a wide spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities including antidiabetic, anti-nociceptive, anti-asthmatic, anti-fever, anti-spastic, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. This paper reviews the therapeutic effects of Zataria multiflora based on recent reports. The relevant reports were extracted by checking the electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar from the beginning of 2010 until the end of May 2023. The neuroprotective effects of Zataria multiflora can be attributed to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and alleviation of brain oxidative damage. Zataria multiflora also exerts its protective effects on the respiratory system, liver, and kidney by reducing the level of inflammatory cytokines, scavenging the free radicals, and augmenting the antioxidant enzymes. Additionally, Zataria multiflora accelerates wound healing via upregulating transforming growth factor-β, insulin-like growth factor 1, fibroblast growth factor 2, and vascular endothelial growth factor, and inducing angiogenesis and collagen biosynthesis. Overall, the protective impacts of Zataria multiflora on different organs are mainly attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

In this study, sequential electrospinning was employed to produce a multilayer film consisting of zein nanofibers (Z) and Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) with different layers. The layers include: Z (without ZMEO), Z1 (one layer of Z + ZMEO), Z3 (three layers of Z + ZMEO), and Z5 (five layers of Z + ZMEO). Then, the effect of this antimicrobial packaging was investigated in relation to increasing the shelf life of strawberries at 4 °C for 12 days. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the fibers demonstrated a uniform and smooth structure without any beads. The use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that ZMEO was physically encapsulated into multilayer Z, resulting in an enhancement in thermal stability. The multilayer film showed a sustained release pattern of the encapsulated ZMEO for Z3, lasting for 90 h, and Z5, lasting for 180 h. This was in contrast to the rapid release within 50 h observed with Z film. The release kinetics for Z5 showed a good correlation with both the Higuchi and Korsmeyer–Peppas models, while for Z1 and Z3 films, Fickian diffusion was identified as the underlying mechanism. The findings of this study indicated that the multilayer film released ZMEO through a combination of diffusion and polymeric erosion. During a 12-day period of cold storage, strawberries that were treated with Z5 showed significant preservation of their anthocyanin (32.99%), antioxidant activity (25.04%), weight loss (24.46%), titratable acidity (11.47%), firmness (29.67%), and color (10.17%) compared to the control sample. The findings indicated that the sequential electrospinning technique used to create the multilayer nanofibrous film could be used in various fields, such as bioactive encapsulation, controlled release, antimicrobial packaging, and food preservation.

Abstract Dental caries and oral infections have become a widespread issue in the modern world. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxicity characteristics of the extracts of Echinacea purpura, Arctium lappa, and the essential oil of Zataria multiflora as a potential herbal mouthwash. The essential oil of Z. multiflora leaves and the extracts of E. purpurea and A. lappa roots were prepared. The characterization was carried out by GC-MS and also, total phenol and flavonoid were assed for all three samples. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects were evaluated against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The cytotoxic effect of the samples was evaluated on HEK 293 and HDFa cells by MTT test. Thymol and carvacrol contents in EO of Z. multiflora were measured at 31% and 42.2%, respectively. A. lappa had the lowest total phenolic and flavonoid value among the samples. On the other hand, the total phenolic content of Z. multiflora and the total flavonoid content of E. purpurea were the highest. The MIC values of Zataria, Arctium, and Echinacea against S. mutans were 0.011% v/v, 187.5 mg/ml, and 93.75 mg/ml, while MBC were 0.011% v/v, 375 mg/ml, and 187.5 mg/ml, respectively. The formulation showed bactericidal activity against S. mutans in the concentration of 5.86 mg/ml for Echinacea and Burdock extracts and 0.08 µl/ml for EO of Zataria. The formulation significantly affected microbial biofilm formation and induced biofilm degradation. The cell viability percentages were higher than 50% during 24 and 48 h. The formulation had a significant antimicrobial effect on cariogenic bacteria and C. albicans, with the lowest cytotoxic effects. Therefore, this formulation can be an appropriate candidate for mouthwash.

Abstract Background Allergic rhinitis is a widespread disorder across the globe. The Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) has been shown to have considerable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study assessed the effect of this herbal product on alterations in inflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokines. Method This study was conducted on the bank sample before and after the intervention to measure interleukin-4, interleukin-5, and interferon -γ levels with the ELISA test method in a supernatant taken from the PBMC cell culture from 30 allergic rhinitis patients. Results The IL-4 level had no significant difference between the two groups before the treatment. However, it had a significant increase in the case group after the treatment. The IL-5 level was significantly higher in the case group before the treatment. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences between the case and control groups after the treatment. Similarly, no significant differences were observed between the two groups considering IFN-γ before and after the treatment. Conclusion Consuming thyme with an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and a decrease in IL-5 cytokine control inflammation and improvement in allergic rhinitis symptoms. Thymus species have found remarkable importance in food and medicine industries. The present study investigates the potential effect of Ag nanoparticle elicitors on proliferation of callus, and production of carvacrol and thymol in Zataria multiflora and three Thymus species. Firstly, callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 2 mg l−1 of 2, 4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 1 mg l−1 of kinetin (Kin)). Secondly, the effects of two different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles (4 and 8 mg l-1) were studied on callus growth and its secondary metabolites production. Results elucidated that after elicitation by 8 mg l-1 ofAg NPs, significantly the highest callus growth rate (CGR) (0.02 mm day-1), callus fresh mass (CFM) (0.99 g), and carvacrol (0.68 mg l-1) and thymol (11.09 mg l-1) content was achieved. Comparing different Thymus species, notably the greatest carvacrol and thymol amount was obtained in .kotschyanus Boiss. & Hohen. and T. Daenesis Čelak. at 8 mg l-1 concentration ofAg NPs. Hence, it is evident that the stimulation by NPs is dose-dependent. This study has potential to be commercially applied for the enhancement of pharmaceutical compounds in different species of Thymus.

The utilization of plant essential oils (EOs) and nanomaterials due to their safety compared with synthetic chemicals has been considered in the management of plant diseases. In this study, the inhibitory effects of Zataria multiflora, Nepeta haussknechtii, Artemisia sieberi, and Citrus aurantifolia EOs in pure and Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanocapsulated formulations were evaluated on the mycelial growth of Alternaria solani to find a suitable alternative for synthetic chemicals. The crystal structure and morphological properties of the fabricated nanomaterials were assessed via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. The textural features of the prepared nanoparticles were investigated with Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, and the presence of elements in the samples was studied with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique. The mycelial growth inhibitory (MGI) was performed in the laboratory by mixing with potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium at concentrations of 100, 300, 600, 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 ppm. Based on the results, major differences were monitored between different concentrations. At the highest studied concentration, the inhibition of Z. multiflora EO was 100%, which was 43.20, 42.37, and 21.19% for N. haussknechtii, A. sieberi, and C. aurantifolia, respectively, and the inhibition of their nanocapsules was 100, 51.32, 55.23, and 26.58%, respectively. In the greenhouse study, Z. multiflora EO and its nanocapsule (ZnO-ZmEO) were compared with the ZnO and chlorothalonil fungicide based on the highest inhibitory of Z. multiflora in vitro. The highest antifungal effect was related to the ZnO-ZmEO by 53.33%. Therefore, the ZnO-ZmEO formulation can be recommended as a biofungicide for managing and controlling tomato early blight disease after further research.

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of thyme extracts from Zataria multiflora and Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam on some productive traits and blood parameters. A total of 240 one-day-old, male broilers of Ross 308 were used in a completely randomized design with 6 experimental groups and 4 replicates with 10 birds in each. Experimental treatments consisted of a basal soybean-meal diet (control), the basal diet supplemented with vitamin E at 200 mg/kg, Zataria multiflora essential oil at 200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg, and Ziziphora clinopodioides essential oil at 200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg. The results showed that the birds in the experimental groups consumed more feed and had significantly greater body weight as well as energy and protein efficiency in the whole experimental period, especially Ziziphora clinopodioides at the level of 400 mg/kg, compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Thyme extracts had a significant effect on the most blood factors, except cholesterol and LDL-c (P < 0.05). Thyme extracts significantly reduced serum albumin and improved HDL-c level (P < 0.05). The experimental groups had a significant effect on the relative weight of breast and thigh, malondialdehyde concentration, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activity (P < 0.05). Based on the results, Ziziphora clinopodioides at the level of 400 mg/kg can be introduced as an effective oral additive to improve the studied traits.

Abstract Background Novel and more efficient compounds are urgently required for medical treatment of cystic echinococcosis (CE). Germinative cell culture of Echinococcus granulosus could be used for anti-echinococcosis agent tests and other biological studies on CE. This study was performed to establish an in vitro cell culture model for E. granulosus germinative cells and to evaluate the lethal effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) on the cultured cells. Methods The inner surface of germinal layers of CE cysts was scraped, and the obtained materials were trypsinized to obtain a suspension of single germinative cells. Medium 199 was used as the basic culture medium and was supplemented with fetal bovine serum, 2-mercaptoethanol, l-cysteine, l-glutamine, glucose, sodium pyruvate, hydatid fluid, amphotericin B and antibiotics. The cells were cultured at a concentration of 104 cells/ml of culture medium and incubated at 37 °C. The culture medium was replaced every 7 days. Chemical composition of ZMEO was identified by GC-MS analysis. ZMEO was tested at concentrations of 0.5–8 mg/ml. Viability of the cells was assessed by trypan blue exclusion assay. Results A significant increase in the cell number was evident at 20, 30 and 45 days after cultivation. At 45 days of cultivation, the number of cells was approximately five-fold higher than on the first day. In GC-MC analysis, carvacrol, p-cymene, g-terpinene and thymol were found to be the main compounds of ZMEO. The lethal effect of ZMEO on the germinative cells at concentrations of 6, 7 and 8 mg/ml was 100% after 60, 25 and 7 min of exposure, respectively. Conclusions At 45 days of cultivation, the cell concentration was suitable for the desired in vitro experiments. A high lethal effect of ZMEO on the germinative cells of E. granulosus may be considered an opportunity for the introduction of a novel, more effective and safer therapeutic agent for treatment of CE using an herbal product. Statement of the Problem: Zataria multiflora (ZM) is a thyme-like plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is native to the center and south of Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Evidence shows that ZM contains thymol and carvacrol and is therefore, effective for the treatment of many conditions especially fungal infections. Oral candidiasis is the most common opportunistic infection of the oral mucosa that plays a role in the development of denture stomatitis. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the antifungal efficacy of ZM and nystatin suspension for the treatment of denture stomatitis. Materials and Method: This single-blind clinical trial evaluated 28 patients (> 18 years old) suffering from type II or III denture stomatitis. Patients were divided into two groups. The control group used nystatin suspension while the case group used ZM drop. The number of Candida albicans (C. albicans) colony-forming units (CFUs) and erythema of the palate were evaluated at baseline and at 14 days after treatment. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 11 via Student’s t test and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: The results showed similar efficacy of nystatin and ZM in the reduction of C.albicans CFUs compared to the baseline value (p= 0.593). Both medications significantly decreased the colony count (p< 0.001). Introduction: Coronaviruses are animal-derived enveloped viruses that in addition to respiratory and digestive diseases have also been found in neurological diseases, some of which have caused nephritis or have been observed in patients with Multiple Sclerosis and mouse hepatitis. However, in general, the most important effect of coronaviruses is on the respiratory and digestive systems. This study aimed to compare the genome of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-28) with that of other viruses of the coronavirus family. Moreover, it was attempted to investigate the possibility of its falsification and finally evaluate the effect of linalool and thymol on the inactivity of the orf1ab protein of SARS-CoV-2. Materials & Methods: The Coronaviridae family virus genome sequence was obtained from the NCBI database. After alignment, the number of mutations, nucleotide diversity, number of sites in which the same substitution occurred, clustering, similarity and genetic distance, as well as dN/dS index were evaluated in this study. The three-dimensional structure of the orf1ab protein prediction and the accuracy of the predicted model was also investigated. Furthermore, this study examined the motif and the domains conserved for the orf1ab gene in all viruses of the Coronaviridae family, as well as the membrane, cytoplasm, and kinase domains in the orf1ab virus of SARS-CoV-2. Regarding the molecular docking, linalool (the most important thirst-suppressing substance of Scrophularia striata) of the model plant (i.e., araboidopsis) and thymol (the most important ingredient of Trachyspermum ammi L.) were used to prevent the inactivation of the orf1ab protein of SARS-CoV-2.Ethics code: IR.UOZ.REC.1399.003 Findings: The SARS-CoV-2 virus has 11 conserved domains and 11 genes. The presence of the NSP13 superfamily and SUD-M superfamily in the SARS-CoV-2 virus genome indicate the ability and effort of this virus to be more stable in the environment. Based on the numerical value of dN/dS (1.036) and Tajima´s D (4.39) for orf1ab, the slope of the changes during evolution for the orf1ab gene is very slow, and there is no choice of direction in virus changes. Based on the highest interaction between linalool protein and orf1ab protein (-41.0), the highest accuracy (0.172), lowest energy level (ΔG=-6.23Kcal/mol), and the best combination (Full Fitness=-1340.18 Kcal/mol) between thymol phytochemical and orf1ab protein, molecular docking results showed that both linalool protein and thymol substance bound to orf1ab protein and inhibited its activity. Discussions & Conclusions: Linalol and thymol affected the inactivity of the orf1ab protein in the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, clinical trials on linalool and thymol should be performed to confirm these hypotheses. If the hypothesis approves, it is suggested to use them in this regard. In addition, by examining the dN/dS indices, as well as evaluating the singletons, domains, and conserved areas of all viruses, it was found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus could not be purposefully manipulated.

Background: Hydatidosis is a common disease of both humans and animals, resulting from infection with the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm. The aim of this study was to investigate the antiparasitic (protoscolicidal) activities of three essential oils in vitro. Methods: This study was designed to evaluate the biochemical composition and in vitro antiparasitic effects of Zataria multiflora, Origanum vulgare and Mentha pulegium essential oils. Gas chromatography was performed to identify the main components of the herbal oils. To determine the antiparasitic properties of the essential oils, live protoscoleces from hydatid cysts were exposed to three concentrations of the herbal oils and were incubated at 37°C for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 minutes. Results: The biochemical analysis of these oils indicated that carvacrol and thymol were the major compounds of the Zataria oil. Further, carvacrol and thymol in Origanum essential oil and pulegone and piperitone in Mentha oil were the major compounds. The quickest and slowest antiparasitic effect was achieved from Zataria and Origanum (10%) or from Zataria (0.6%), respectively. This study aimed to examine the effect of Zataria multiflora Boiss. mouthwash on the microbial load of the oral cavity in patients under mechanical ventilation. This randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2019 on patients under mechanical ventilation. Sampling was performed using the consecutive method. Using a block randomization method, 90 patients were allocated to three equal groups of 30 to receive mouth care using chlorhexidine, Z. multiflora, or normal saline. Mouthwash was used three times a day for a week. Eight hours before and after the intervention, sterile samples of saliva were collected and cultured in the laboratory. Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, paired t and McNemar’s tests, and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. After the interventions, a significant difference in the microbial load was found between the three groups (P < 0.021). The Tukey post hoc test showed a significant difference between the group treated with Z. multiflora and those who received chlorhexidine (P value = 0.016). The frequency of patients with positive cultures was lower in the group treated with Z. multiflora and the differences were statistically significant in terms of Acinetobacter (P = 0.01) and Klebsiella pneumonia (P = 0.02). Z. multiflora mouthwash was effective in decreasing the microbial load of the oral cavity. This mouthwash can be used to reduce the microbial load of the oral cavity in patients under mechanical ventilation and reduce the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Objectives: Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogenic bacterium and one of the pathogens that commonly causes biofilm infections in the clinic. Antibiotic resistance has spread worldwide in Staphylococcus aureus and is a serious problem for the treatment of patients. In this study, the effect of thyme essential oil of Shirazi and cinnamon on the formation of biofilm in Staphylococcus aureus strains has been investigated. Methods: In this study, 20 clinical samples of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from the urine of patients admitted to the intensive care unit of Taleghani Hospital in Tehran. The microdilution test was performed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils on strains. The ability of biofilm formation in the collected strains was assessed by microtiterplate and the effects of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils were evaluated on biofilm formation. Results: In this study, 75% of Staphylococcus aureus strains formed strong biofilm and 25% moderate biofilm. Treatment of Staphylococcus aureus strains with Zataria multiflora essential oils in MIC concentration revealed that biofilm formation were 40% weak and 60% strains did not form biofilm. Treatment of strains with cinnamon essential oil at MIC concentration was observed to be 25% strong biofilm and 75% moderate biofilm. The present study shows the effect of essential oils of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon in reducing the biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus strains.

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death among women; thus, developing new drugs is crucial. Essential oils (EO)s with a wide range of bioactivities, such as anticancer effects, have provided a valuable source for this purpose. In this study, components of two medicinally important EOs were identified using GC-MS analysis. Moreover, antioxidant effects, as well as anti-cancer properties, were evaluated.The EOs formulated into nanoemulsion using the spontaneous emulsification approach, separately. Comprehensive stability tests were performed to select the optimum nanoemulsions of each EO. Anticancer effect of the most stable nanoemulsion of Zataria multiflora with a particle size of 43 ± 4 nm (PDI 0.4 ± 0.2 and SPAN 0.6 ± 0.1) was significantly better non-formulated form against four human breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7, MDA-MB-175, MDA-MB-231, and MDA-MB-468. Interestingly, the anticancer effect of Artemisia dracunculus nanoemulsion (16 ± 4 nm, 0.2 ± 0.1, and 0.4 ± 0.1) was also significantly improved in compassion to the essential oil. Considering the results, prepared nanoemulsions could be used as supplementary drugs or food additives.

Objective: Paraquat (PQ) is a herbicide which induces oxidative stress and inflammation. Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects were shown for Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora) and carvacrol previously. The effects of Z. multiflora hydroalcoholic extract and carvacrol on systemic inflammation and oxidative stressinduced by inhaled PQ were examined in this study. Materials and Methods: Six groups of male rats used in this study were as follows: control group exposed to normal saline aerosol, one group exposed to PQ 54 mg/m3 aerosol, animals exposed to PQ 54 mg/m3 and treated with Z. multiflora (200 and 800 mg/kg/day) or carvacrol (20 and 80 mg/kg/day) for 16 days after the end of exposure to PQ. Exposure to PQ was performed 8 times, every other day, each time for 30 min. After the end of the treatment period, different variables were measured. Results: Significant increases in nitrite (NO2), malondialdehyde (MDA) and interleukin (IL)-6 serum levels but significant reduction of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) serum levels as well as IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio were observed in PQ-exposed compared to control group (p2, and IL-6 but increased IFN-γ and IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio compared to un-treated PQ exposed group (p Conclusion: Treatment with Z. multiflora and carvacrol improved systemic inflammation oxidative biomarkers induced by inhaled PQ which may indicate therapeutic potential of the plant and its constituent, carvacrol in systemic inflammation and oxidative biomarkers induced by inhaled PQ.

Objective(s): The effects of PPAR-γ agonist alone and in combination with carvacrol and Zataria multiflora on inhaled paraquat (PQ) induced-systemic inflammation and oxidative stress were examined. Materials and Methods: Control group exposed to normal saline aerosol, one group exposed to 54 mg/m3 PQ aerosol and four groups exposed to PQ aerosol and treated with 5 mg/kg/day pioglitazone, pioglitazone + 200 mg/kg/day Z. multiflora extract, pioglitazone + 20 mg/kg/day carvacrol, and 0.03 mg /kg/day dexamethasone for 16 days after the end of exposure to PQ were studied. Exposure to normal saline or PQ was performed every other days for 30 min (8 times). Different variables were measured after the end of treatment period.Results: PQ exposure significantly increased serum levels of NO2, MDA and IL-6 but dexreased CAT and IFN-γ levels and IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio compared to control group (PConclusion: The effects of combination therapy of pioglitazone with Z. multiflora or carvacrol on inhaled paraquat (PQ) induced-oxidative stress and systemic inflammation were higher than the effects of pioglitazone alone. These results suggested that the effects of the extract and carvacrol may mediated through PPAR-γ receptors.

Hydatid disease is an economic and public health concern in many countries. Currently, surgery is the main treatment option for hydatid disease. In the surgical treatment of hydatidosis, the use of scolicidal agents is very important due to inactivating live protoscoleces and preventing the recurrence of infection. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate newscolicidal agents and novel medications with higher safety and efficacy. In the previous in vitro studies, the scolicidal effects of the methanolic extracts and aromatic water of Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora) have been demonstrated. Consequently, in this study, the impact of the nanoemulsion of Z. multiflora essential oil on subcutaneous hydatid cysts was compared with albendazole (ABZ). Fifty laboratory male mice were inoculated with 300 viable protoscoleces subcutaneously on the two sides of the abdomen. Following five months of infection, the remaining infected mice (n=42) were allocated into two treatment and one control (without treatment) groups containing fourteen animals each. Group A received ABZ at the dose of 50 mg/kg for 60 days, group B received the nanoemulsions of Z. multiflora at the dose of 50 mg/kg in drinking water for 60 days, and group C was considered as the control group. All the infected mice were euthanized and necropsied two months post-intervention. Afterwards, the cysts were cautiously collected and their number, size, and weight were compared between the mice of different groups. The mean number of hydatid cysts indicated that the nanoemulsion of Z. multiflora essence had a relative superiority to ABZ. On the other hand, the therapeutic effect of ABZ was higher than the nanoemulsion of Z. multiflora essential oil in terms of the mean weight and mean size of hydatid cysts. However, no significant difference was observed between the groups (P>0.5). Overall, the number, weight, and size of cysts were not significantly different between the groups in this investigation. The lack of satisfactory therapeutic results in this study might be due to the location of hydatid cysts in the subcutaneous space.

Abstract Background: Zataria multiflora Boiss is a well-known medicinal plant and its’ essential oil (EO) is traditionally used for treatment of respiratory and digestive disorders and/or bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections. Objective: This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of long-term consumption of Z. multiflora EO on hematological and biochemical parameters in patients infected with liver hydatid disease. Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients were administered orally with Z. multiflora EO (60 mg daily) for six months. Hematological and biochemical analysis were performed on the blood samples of patients before the start of treatment and after completion of the treatment course. In hematological analysis, WBC, RBC, Hb, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC and platelets were measured. In biochemical analysis, FBS, BUN, creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, Na, K, Cl, AST, ALT, and ALK were assessed. Results: No apparent changes were observed in the values of hematological parameters of the patients after treatment. No significant changes also occurred in the values of FBS, BUN, creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, Na, and K. The mean values of AST, ALT and ALK enzymes decreased significantly after treatment (P ˂ 0.05). No adverse clinical event was noticed in the patients during the course of study. Conclusions: Long-term consumption of Z. multiflora EO induced no adverse effect on the hematological and biochemical parameters of patients infected with liver hydatid disease. Since Z. multiflora EO reduced the level of liver transaminases (AST, ALT and ALK), this herbal product may be considered as a hepatoprotective agent in human beings.

Medicinal herbs are widely used in the both traditional and modern medicines. Thymus vulgaris (T. vulgaris), Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora), and Portulaca oleracea (P. oleracea) have been traditionally known as medicinal herbs. In this article, immune-modulatory effects of T.s vulgaris, Z. multiflora, and P. oleracea and their constituents, are reviewed. To this end, relevant articles, books, and conference papers published in English, until the end of September 2020, were retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. Based on the literature, T. vulgaris and thymol reduced IL-6, IL- 1β and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) at both gene and proteins levels. Z. multiflora and carvacrol increased serum levels of IFN-γ but reduced IL-4 levels. P. oleracea and quercetin decreased T helper 2 (Th2)/Th1 and Th2/ regulatory T cells (Tregs) ratios by inducing IL-10 but suppression of IL-4. Together, these medicinal plants might be considered for the treatment of conditions associated with immune-dysregulation such as asthma and cancer.

Objective: Stressors have an important role in sickness behaviors. We checked the effect of Zataria multiflora (ZM) extract against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anxiety and depression behaviors in rats. Material and Methods: Rats were distributed in the following groups (n=10): Control, LPS (1 mg/kg), LPS-ZM50, LPS-ZM100 and LPS-ZM200. LPS was syringed intraperitoneally (ip) 2 hr before performing behavioral tests. LPS-ZM groups were treated with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg (ip) of ZM extract 30 min before LPS administration. Open field (OF), elevated plus maze (EPM) and forced swimming (FS) tests were done. White blood cell (WBC) was counted in all groups. Results: In OF, pretreatment with ZM extract augmented the number of lines crossed and traveled distance in central and peripheral areas. The rats treated with ZM extract spent more time in the central zone and less time in the peripheral area compared to the LPS group. In EPM, the number of entries into the open and closed arms and stop time in the open arms in LPS-ZM groups were higher than the LPS group. The stop time in the closed arms of ZM-LPS groups was less than the LPS group. In FS test, swimming and climbing time in groups treated with ZM extract was more than the LPS group while their immobility time was less. WBC count in the LPS-ZM100 and LPS-ZM200 was lower than that of the LPS group. Conclusion: Based on the results, pretreatment with ZM extract restituted anxiety and depression caused by LPS in rats. This effect of ZM was associated with amelioration of LPS-promoted inflammation.

Objective: Zataria multiflora (Zm) has been proposed for memory enhancing in Persian traditional medicine; but to now, no study has been carried out in this field yet. The aim of this research was to study the plant effect on spatial memory in scopolamine-induced amnesia and investigate in vivo anticholinesterase effect of Zm. Material and Methods: Aerial parts of the plant were extracted with methanol and standardized on the basis of rutin content. Male rats received three doses of Zm extract (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (ip) for 7 days) and 30 min after the latest dose, scopolamine (1 mg/kg) was administered to animals. Learning capacity and spatial memory were studied using morris water maze (MWM) and passive avoidance test (PAT) methods. Anticholinesterase activity was studied using Ellman’s method. Physostigmine (0.3 mg/kg) and piracetam (200 mg/kg) were used as positive controls. Results: All doses of Zm extract significantly decreased the distance and time spent to find the platform in MWM and increased the time latency in PAT test. In both MWM and PAT tests, the highest effect of Zm was observed at 200 mg/kg which was in accordance with AChE inhibitory effect of the plant. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that Zm has anti-amnesic effect and might improve memory deficit through anticholinesterase activity.

Introduction : Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative and microaerophilic bacterium. About half of the human population in the world is infected with this bacterium. Helicobacter pylori is known to be one of the main causes of stomach ulcers and gastric cancer. The increased antibiotic resistance, the high cost of combined treatments and adverse side effects have led to an increase in the tendency to alternative methods such as the use of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, probiotics and herbal medicines. Material and method : In this study the published articles on the effects of 29 plant families, including 69 Iranian plant species against H. pylori in vitro and in vivo conditions were reviewed and categorized. Results : According to the obtained results, plants such as Mentha Piperita, Zataria multiflora, Salvia mirzayanii, Geum Iranicum, Rhus coriaria , Commiphora myrrha, Heracleum persicum, Trachyspermum amm, Artemisia absinthium, Glycyrrhiza glabra L, Olea europaea and Punica granatum are the most affected plants against Helicobacter pylori in vitro condition. Discussion and conclusion: The observed antibacterial effects of the tested herbs in this study suggest that these herbs have the potential to be used as a viable alternative treatement for of the H. pylori infections but antibacterial activity evaluation of herbal extracts against H. pylori should be evaluated both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Also, determining the effective ingredient can help further research in this regard. The effectiveness of the same plant species should be evaluated in the different regions and ultimately concluded in the field of their effect. It is clear that the obtain outcome of the antibacterial effect of the same herbal extract on different strains of a bacterial species might be different so the standard strain of H. pylori must be use.

Objective: Zataria multiflora (ZM) is a plant with ethnopharmacological value which was recently tested to reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of ZM essential oil on spatial cognitive and noncognitive behavior, as well as hippocampal tau protein and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) concentrations in rats with AD. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five adult male Sprague Dawley rats (300±30 g) were randomly divided into 5 groups: control (intact rats); sham (received intracerebroventricular (ICV) microinjection of normal saline); AD control (rats with AD that did not receive any treatment); vehicle control (rats with AD that orally received tween-80, 5% (ZM essential oil vehicle) for 20 days) and experimental (rats with AD that orally received ZM essential oil 100 µl/kg/day for 20 days). AD was induced by bidirectional microinjection of β amyloid 1-42 (10 µg/2µl). Tau protein and TNFα concentrations were measured by ELISA methods. Spatial cognitive and noncognitive behavior were determined by Morris water maze (MWM) test. Results: ZM essential oil significantly improved latency time, time spent in the target quarter and cognitive behavior of rats with AD compared to control and sham groups (pConclusion: ZM essential oil improves spatial learning and memory of rats with AD as assessed by MWM test. These effects are associated with decreased concentrations of hippocampal tau protein and TNFα.

Background and purpose: In recent decades, various efforts have been made to replace synthetic materials with natural disinfectants that have less disadvantages and lead to similar or even better results. The present study was conducted to compare the effect of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora as natural disinfectants with those of Deconex and sodium hypochlorite as two industrial disinfectants on Candida albicans. Materials and methods: This experimental study was conducted in 128 resin acrylic dentures. After the inoculation of C. albicans on each denture, they were divided into four groups, each containing 32 dentures. Deconex, Sodium hypochlorite, Artemisia aucheri, and Zataria multiflora were administered in each group in four densities (0.1, 0.01, 0.001, and 0.0001). Objective The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of two different levels of Zataria multiflora with Avilamycin antibiotic and probiotic based on Bacillus subtilis on humoral and cellular immunity and expression of MUC2 gene in broiler chickens of Arian strain. Materials and methods This study was conducted in a completely randomized design with five experimental groups with 4 replicates and 25 observations in each replicate. Experimental groups included basal diet and basal diet containing 100 mg Bacillus subtilis, 150 mg avilamycin, 200 mg and 400 mg Zataria multiflora essence, respectively. In order to evaluate the humoral and cellular immunity, the antibody produced against the sheep's red blood cell, white blood cell differentialcounts and the volume percentage of red blood cells were determined. Expression of MUC2 gene from the intestinal tissues was investigated by Real time PCR. Results The results showed that response to red blood cells of sheep, immunoglobulin G and M was not affected by experimental groups(p>0.05). The number of white blood cells and the ratio of heterophil to lymphocyte were not affected by the experimental groups (p>0.05). The expression of MUC2 gene in the chickens that consumed the basal diet included Zataria multiflora was significantly increased compared with the control group. Conclusions The results showed that the use of Zataria multiflora essence could be having moderating effects on the immune system. It, by increasing the expression of MUC2 gene, could be having improving effect on the digestive system performance of broiler chickens. Introduction: The current study aimed at evaluating the effects of Zataria Multiflora (ZM) on learning and memory of adult male offspring rats with prenatal lead-exposure. Methods: Pregnant rats in the case group received tap water containing 0.2% lead acetate throughout the gestation period. Control rats had free access to lead-free tap water. Two male offspring (two-month-old, weighing 180-200 g) from each mother were randomly selected and treated with either Z. Multiflora (50, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg/ Intraperitoneally (I.P) /20 day) or saline. Spatial memory of the control, saline, and ZM-treated rats was evaluated by a training trial and probe test using Morris water maze (6-8 rat/group). ABSTRACT Background and objectives: Utilization of essential oils instead of chemical preservatives has received significant attention in recent years. The present study aims to evaluate chemical composition and antibacterial and antioxidant properties of essential oils of Zataria multiflora, Artemisia deracunculus and Mentha piperita. Methods: Chemical profile of the essential oils was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The microwell dilution and agar disk diffusion methods were used to evaluate the antibacterial properties of the essential oils. Total phenolic content, β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching test and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays were carried out to determine the antioxidant properties. Results: Menthol (39.18%) and mentone (21.64%) were the main components of the essential oil of M. piperita, while estragol (34.75%) and limonene (15.72%) were the major components of the essential oil of A. dracunculus. The main components of the essential oil of Z. multiflora were carvacrol (36.81%) and thymol (33.04%). The essential oils of M. piperita and Z. multiflora showed greater antimicrobial effects. Moreover, Z. multiflora showed the greatest antioxidant activity among the essential oils. The total phenolic content of Z. multiflora was 228.14±0.45 mg gallic acid equivalent/g. Conclusion: Given their favorable antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, the essential oils of Z. multiflora, A. deracunculus and M. piperita can be used as natural food preservatives. Purpose: Albendazole is the drug of choice for chemotherapy of cystic echinococcosis (CE) but 40% of patients do not respond to it satisfactorily. With regard to the previously reported scolicidal activity of Zataria multiflora, this study was done to evaluate the efficacy of the co-administration of albendazole and Z. multiflora aromatic water (AW) on hydatid cysts in a murine model. Materials and Methods: Laboratory mice were infected with 1,500 viable protoscoleces. After development of hydatid cysts, the infected mice were allocated into four treatment and one control group. The mice of groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were treated orally with albendazole (100 mg/kg), Z. multiform AW (100 ml/l), albendazole (100 mg/kg) – Z. multiform AW and albendazole ((50 mg/kg) – Z. multiform AW respectively. Two months later, all the mice were euthanized and necropsied and the number, size and weight of hydatid cysts were compared between different groups. Results: The size of the largest cysts, as well as the total weight of cysts, were significantly lower (p < .05) in the mice treated with albendazole (50 mg/kg) – Z. multiflora AW in comparison to those treated with albendazole (100 mg/kg) alone. Conclusions: The results of this study revealed the superiority of co-administration of albendazole and Z. multiflora AW to albendazole alone in the treatment of CE in laboratory mice. Since Z. multiflora AW is a safe and useful drink, it may be used successfully to enhance the therapeutic effect of albendazole in the patients infected with hydatid disease.

Background: Aspergillus flavus is a toxic contaminant in foods, which can induce mutagenic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic effects. In last decades, synthetic fungicides have been used for inhibition of fungal growth in plants. The public attention was also attracted to contamination of food chain by these chemicals. Therefore, in the current study, we decided to use Zataria multiflora (ZM) essential oil to inhibit the Aspergillus flavus growth. Method: The essential oil from ZM was obtained by hydro-distillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal fungicidal concentration (MFC) of ZM essential oil were determined at different concentrations (0-1000 ppm). Results: In this study, Carvacrol (33.45%) and Thymol (34.44%) were the most frequent compounds of the ZM essential oil. The minimum inhibitory and fungicidal concentrations were 100 and 400 ppm, respectively. Conclusions: The presence of phenolic compounds such as Thymol and Carvacrol, as the major components of ZM essential oil inhibits the Aspergillus flavus growth. Furthermore, this essential oil has a very strong anti-bacterial effect. Considering these results, it seems that ZM essential oil is potentially an appropriate natural alternative for controlling Aspergillus flavus fungus.

Objective: Oxidative stress leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction, which causes tissue injury in diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Zataria multiflora extract on TNF-α, oxidative stress products, and insulin levels as well as lipid profile in diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: Rats were randomly divided into 6 groups of 10 animals. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ). Control and diabetic control rats orally received 1 mL/day of normal saline, whereas the other three groups received 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day of Z. multiflora extract, and one non-diabetic group orally received 1000 mg/kg/day Z. multiflora extract, for 28 days. At the end of the treatment course, rats were anesthetized and their serum samples were analyzed for TNF-α, malondialdehyde (MDA), super oxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), lipid profile, total plasma protein, blood glucose, insulin, and liver enzymes levels. Results: Our results showed that cholesterol, LDL, TG, MDA and TNF-α levels decreased, but HDL, SOD, TAC, and total protein increased significantly in the diabetic group receiving 1000 mg/kg Z. multiflora compared to the diabetic control group (P

ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram negative opportunistic pathogen and an important cause of wound infections and nosocomial infections. The purpose of this study was to study inhibitory effects of a new ointment prepared from medicinal plants against P. aeruginosa isolates. Methods: In this study, an ointment called ZOUSH was prepared from mixing alcoholic extracts of Satureja khuzestaniea, Zataria multiflora, Mentha mozaffariani Jamzad, honey and polyurethane. Minimal inhibitory concentration of ZOUSH and its compositions alone or combined was determined using the disk diffusion method. Results: S. khuzestaniea, Z. multiflora and Mentha mozaffariani Jamzad had inhibitory effects against P. aeruginosa. The ZOUSH ointment had greater antibacterial effects than the any of its compositions used solely or combined. The diameter of inhibition zone had a direct relationship with the concentration of the extracts. Moreover, the antibacterial effect of the ZOUSH ointment was identical to that of polymyxine B (300 µg). Conclusion: We demonstrated that the ZOUSH ointment has inhibitory effects against P. aerugionosa. The inhibition zone diameter is directly correlated with the concentration of the extracts. Our results suggest that the ointment could be useful for treatment of burn wounds and skin infections.

Background and Objectives: Plant-derived essential oils (EOs) shave many usages in health and medicine, such as antibacterial agents. The aim of this study was the improvement of antibacterial activities of two EOs using nanotechnology. Materials and Methods: Antibacterial activity was investigated on four important human pathogenic bacteria using the 96-well plate microdilution method, a quantitative approach. Eleven formulations were prepared using each of the EOs. Eventually, the best nanoformulation with the smallest particle size and polydispersive indices (PDI and SPAN) was selected using each EO for further investigations. Moreover, two microemulsions with similar ingredients and the same portion in comparison with two selected nanoemulsions were also prepared. Antibacterial activity of each EO was compared with its micro- and nano-emulsions. Results: The antibacterial efficacy of Zataria multiflora EO (ZMEO) was significantly better than Mentha piperita EO (MPEO). Besides, the antibacterial activity of nanoemulsion of ZMEO with a particle size of 129 ± 12 nm was significantly better than no- and micro-formulated forms of ZMEO. Interestingly, the efficiency of MPEO nanoemulsion (160 ± 25 nm) was also significantly better than MPEO and its micro-formulated form. Conclusion: Regardless of the intrinsic antibacterial property of two examined EOs, by formulating to nanoemulsion, their efficiencies were improved. Nanoemulsion of ZMEO introduced as an inexpensive, potent and green antibacterial agent.

Aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of herbal plant essential oils (EOs) from selected Iranian plant species such as Ferulago angulata, Zataria multiflora, Cuminum cyminum, and Mentha longifolia against antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains. For this purpose, the Escherichia coli strains, isolated from raw cow’s milk and local dairy products (yogurt, cream, whey, cheese, and confectionery products) collected from different areas of Hamedan province, Iran, were investigated for their resistance to antibiotics (i.e., streptomycin, tetracycline, gentamicin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, and cefixime). Thus, the E. coli strains were tested for their susceptibility to the above-mentioned essential oils. Regarding antibiotics, the E. coli strains were highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin. In relation to essential oils, the most effective antibacterial activity was observed with Zataria multiflora; also, the bacteria were semi-sensitive to Cuminum cyminum and Mentha longifolia essential oils. All strains were resistant to Ferulago angulata essential oil. According to the results, the essential oil of Zataria multiflora can be considered as a practical and alternative antibacterial strategy to inhibit the growth of multidrug-resistant E. coli of dairy origin.

Objectives: The hepatotoxicity induced by Acetaminophen (AAP) mostly mediated by effect on oxidative stress parameters. The Zataria multiflora (Z.M) is an herbal medicine with well-known antioxidant effect. The aim of this study is investigation of preventive effects of Z.M and Carvacrol (CAR) on AAP-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into four groups including: 1) Control, 2) Acetaminophen (AAP), 3) and 4) CAR. The saline, Z.M (200 mg/kg) and CAR (20 mg/ kg) were administrated orally for 6 days, after that AAP (600 mg/kg) was administrated in the 7th day. Blood sampling was performed on the first and last days. Also, the liver tissue was removed for evaluation of Malondyaldehide (MDA), Thiol content, Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase (CAT). Total Protein (tPro), Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (GOT), Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (GPT) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) in liver tissue were evaluated. The changes (Δ) of enzymes activities were presented. Results: The Δ GOT, Δ GPT and Δ ALP in CAR group significantly decreased compared to AAP group (P < 0.01 to P < 0.001) and Δ GPT in Z.M group was significantly reduced in comparison with AAP group (P < 0.05). Also, MDA, Thiol, SOD and CAT levels in treated groups were attenuated compared to AAP group (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001). Conclusion: Z.M and CAR have a powerful hepatoprotective effect. CAR is more effective than Z.M. Based on the results. Z.M and CAR could be potent supplementary agents against hepatotoxicity of AAP in patients.

The production of reactive oxygen species, such as hydrogen peroxide is inevitable in aerobic metabolism. Since, these compounds are effective at different concentration in a variety of processes in the cell and their excessive production lead to oxidative stresses, Therefore, their concentration must be controlled. In this study, Zataria multiflora essential oil with abundant phenolic compounds (thymol, carvacrol), and zedo gum polymers were used to encapsulate nanoemulsion production. The effect of zedo gum - Zataria multiflora essential oil nanoemulsion were investigated in the inhibition of ABTS (2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid), hydrogen peroxide free radicals intercellular and expression of the (NOX:NAD(P)H oxidase) gene with accession number AY561153 (the largest producer of reactive oxygen species). Nanoemulsion with 88 mg/gr phenol content showed a high ability to inhibit the free radical ABTS and hydrogen peroxide. On the other hand, at concentration of 25 and 50 µg/ml increased the expression of NOX and at concentration of 100, 150 and 200 µg/ml decreased it. Our results showed that, different concentration of nanoemulsion have different effect on reactive oxygen species and, therefore, they have the ability to control oxidative stresses.

Background: Due to the antioxidant effects of Zataria multiflora (ZM) and Carvacrol (CAR) in various problems and the prominent role of the ROS in neurotoxicity induced by Doxorubicin (DOX), this study was designed to investigate the effects of ZM hydroalcoholic extract and CAR on DOX-induced oxidative stress in rat brain. Methods: 24 male rats were randomly divided into four groups including: 1)Control ,2)Doxorubicin (DOX) that received DOX via a tail vein on the first day of the study, 3,4) ZM+DOX and CAR+DOX which received ZM and CAR by gavage for 28 consecutive days. Brain tissue removed for redox markers evaluation. Results: MDA level in the DOX group was significantly increased compared to control group while in treated groups did not show any significant changes in comparison with the DOX group. Also, Thiol content in DOX group showed significant reduction compared to control group. Thiol contents in treated groups showed no significant difference compared to DOX group. Catalase (CAT) activity, an antioxidant enzyme, in the DOX group were significantly decreased compared to control group and increased in treated rats in comparison with the DOX group. Activity of Superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant enzyme, in the DOX group was significantly reduced compared to control group and increased in treated rats in comparison with the DOX group. Conclusion: The present study showed that ZM hydroalcoholic extract and CAR could inhibit DOX induced oxidative stress of the brain mainly with effect on the enzymatic antioxidant defense system.

Objective: Zataria multiflora has been reported to have several medicinal properties including antioxidant, antibacterial, antispasmodic, and expectorant activities. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Z. multiflora hydro-alcoholic extract (ZMHE) on peptic ulcer caused by indomethacin in rats. Materials and Methods: ZMHE was prepared by maceration, condensed by rotary evaporator and dried by a freeze-drier. In this study, 72 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 12 groups, six in each including: normal rats, control rats, ranitidine-treated, and animals that were treated with ZMHE (100, 200, 400 mg/kg). Parenteral and oral treatments were done 1 and 2 hours, respectively before gastric ulcer induction by indomethacin (25 mg/kg, i.p.). After 6 hours, animals were sacrificed, two sides of the stomach were ligated and gastric contents and tissues were investigated in terms of pH and biochemical and histologic parameters, respectively. Results: ZMHE (at all doses) considerably decreased the ulcer area and ulcer severity in comparison to control group after oral and parenteral administration. Oral administration of this extract increased thepH of stomach contents while diminished pepsin activity in a dose-dependent manner. Following parenteral treatment, a significant difference in pH of stomach content was observed only by ZMHE 400mg/kg in comparison to control group. The myeloperoxidase (MPO) enzyme activity decreased in groups that received the extract via both oral and parenteral routes. Conclusion: It might be concluded that ZMHE could protect against experimental gastric ulcer induced by indomethacin and this action is probably mediated via reducing acid secretion and pepsin activity besides enhancing tissue antioxidant capacity

Objective(s): Cisplatin (CP), as an anti-neoplastic drug, causes testicular damage. Zataria multiflora Boiss (ZM), a medicinal plant, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ZM against CP-induced testicular toxicity. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, thirty-two adult male mice were randomly divided into four groups. The control group received normal saline with oral gavage during 7 days; ZM group received ZM (200 mg/kg) during 7 days by gavage; CP group received CP (10 mg/kg) intraperitoneally (IP) in the 5th day of study; ZM + CP group received ZM during 7 days and CP was injected in 5th day. Sperm parameters, biochemical (MDA, GSH, and PC) levels, serum testosterone levels, and histopathological and immunohistochemical assays of testis were examined one day after the last drug treatment. Results: CP treatment caused significant damage via changed sperm parameters (sperm motility, count, viability rate, and abnormalities), increased oxidative stress (increased MDA and PC levels, and decreased GSH level), histological changes (degeneration, necrosis, arrest of spermatogenesis, congestion, and decrease in thickness of the germinal epithelium, diameter of seminiferous tubules, and Johnsen’s Score), decreased serum testosterone level, and increased caspase-3 immunoreactivity. ZM preserved spermatogenesis and mitigated the toxic effects of CP on the testis tissue. In addition, treatment with ZM significantly reduced caspase-3 immunoreactivity. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that ZM as a potential antioxidant compound and due to free radicals scavenging activities has a protective effect against CP-induced testicular toxicity.

Background: Obesity is a major risk factor for many diseases. In Persian Medicine, much emphasis has been put on the balanced weight that maintains health. Therefore, the treatment of obesity is a top priority for health care in Persian and Classical Medicine. Objective: To compare the efficacy of therapeutic packages in Persian Medicine with Classical Medicine in overweight treatment. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted at Ghaem Hospital in Mashhad, Iran, from August 22, 2016 to December 20, 2016. Sixty-nine overweight women with body mass index (BMI) of 27-29.9 and waist circumference more than 88 cm based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, were included in the study. To control bias in sampling, with considering that the age variable is an interventional factor in the process of effective treatment, in addition to using the random allocation method, the population were studied in three groups of 18- 30 years old, 31-50 years old and >50 years old, who were classified by blocking method, and three types of treatment interventions were performed in each age group: Group A (Classical diet and orlistat), Group B (Persian diet and MDB) and Group C (classical diet and MDB). Calorie consumption was equivalent in the three groups. Blinding was done only for patients. The treatment period was three months in all three groups. Subsequently, we analyzed the effectiveness of the therapeutic packages on anthropometric index, body composition and laboratory parameters in the three groups. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 16. We used descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, ANOVA, paired-samples t-test, non-parametric Wilcoxon test and regression methods for the analyses of primary and secondary outcomes.
