Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) demonstrates various opportunities and risks. Our study explores the trade-off of AI technology, including existential risks. We develop a theory and a Bayesian simulation model in order to explore what is at stake. The study reveals four tangible outcomes: (i) regulating existential risks has a boundary solution of either prohibiting the technology or allowing a laissez-faire regulation. (ii) the degree of ‘normal’ risks follows a trade-off and is dependent on AI-intensity. (iii) we estimate the probability of ‘normal’ risks to be between 0.002% to 0.006% over a century. (iv) regulating AI requires a balanced and international approach due to the dynamic risks and its global nature.

Abstract Background Energy allocation between growth and reproduction determines puberty onset and fertility. In mammals, peripheral hormones such as leptin, insulin and ghrelin signal metabolic information to the higher centres controlling gonadotrophin-releasing hormone neurone activity. However, these observations could not be confirmed in lower vertebrates, suggesting that other factors may mediate the energetic trade-off between growth and reproduction. A bioinformatic and experimental study suggested co-regulation of the circadian clock, reproductive axis and growth-regulating genes in zebrafish. While loss-of-function of most of the identified co-regulated genes had no effect or only had mild effects on reproduction, no such information existed about the co-regulated somatostatin, well-known for its actions on growth and metabolism. Results We show that somatostatin signalling is pivotal in regulating fecundity and metabolism. Knock-out of zebrafish somatostatin 1.1 (sst1.1) and somatostatin 1.2 (sst1.2) caused a 20–30% increase in embryonic primordial germ cells, and sst1.2 −/− adults laid 40% more eggs than their wild-type siblings. The sst1.1 −/− and sst1.2 −/− mutants had divergent metabolic phenotypes: the former had 25% more pancreatic α-cells, were hyperglycaemic and glucose intolerant, and had increased adipocyte mass; the latter had 25% more pancreatic β-cells, improved glucose clearance and reduced adipocyte mass. Conclusions We conclude that somatostatin signalling regulates energy metabolism and fecundity through anti-proliferative and modulatory actions on primordial germ cells, pancreatic insulin and glucagon cells and the hypothalamus. The ancient origin of the somatostatin system suggests it could act as a switch linking metabolism and reproduction across vertebrates. The results raise the possibility of applications in human and animal fertility.

Introduction: Sessile plants engage in trade-offs between growth and defense capacity in response to fluctuating environmental cues. MYB is an important transcription factor that plays many important roles in controlling plant growth and defense. However, the mechanism behind how it keeps a balance between these two physiological processes is still largely unknown. Objectives: Our work focuses on the dissection of the molecular mechanism by which GhMYB33 regulates plant growth and defense. Methods: The CRISPR/Cas9 technique was used to generate mutants for deciphering GhMYB33 functions. Yeast two-hybrid, luciferase complementary imaging, and co-immunoprecipitation assays were used to prove that proteins interact with each other. We used the electrophoretic mobility shift assay, yeast one-hybrid, and luciferase activity assays to analyze GhMYB33 acting as a promoter. A β-glucuronidase fusion reporter and 5′ RNA ligase mediated amplification of cDNA ends analysis showed that ghr-miR319c directedly cleaved the GhMYB33 mRNA. Results: Overexpressing miR319c-resistant GhMYB33 (rGhMYB33) promoted plant growth, accompanied by a significant decline in resistance against Verticillium dahliae. Conversely, its knockout mutant, ghmyb33, demonstrated growth restriction and concomitant augmentation of V. dahliae resistance. GhMYB33 was found to couple with the DELLA protein GhGAI1 and bind to the specific cis-elements of GhSPL9 and GhDFR1 promoters, thereby modulating internode elongation and plant resistance in V. dahliae infection. The ghr-miR319c was discovered to target and suppress GhMYB33 expression. The overexpression of ghr-miR319c led to enhanced plant resistance and a simultaneous reduction in plant height. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that GhMYB33 encodes a hub protein and controls the expression of GhSPL9 and GhDFR1, implicating a pivotal role for the miR319c-MYB33 module to regulate the trade-offs between plant growth and defense.

China’s Grain to Green Program (GTGP), which is one of the largest payments for ecosystem services (PES) in the world, has made significant ecological improvements to the environment. However, current understanding of its outcomes on the social-ecological system (SES) remains limited. Therefore, taking the South China Karst as an example, a SES resilience evaluation index system was constructed followed by an exploratory spatial analysis, root mean square error, and Self-Organizing Feature Map to clarify the spatiotemporal changes and relationship of SES resilience, achieve the zoning of SES resilience and provide restoration measures. The results showed an upward trend in social resilience from 2000 to 2020, especially its subsystem of social development. Regional ecological resilience was stable, owing to a slightly declined ecosystem services and increased landscape pattern. Spatially, nearly half of the counties exhibited a distribution mismatch in SES resilience. There was an obvious inverted U-shaped relationship of SES resilience, indicating a clear threshold effect, and the constraint relationship of SES resilience eased over time, demonstrating the effectiveness of the ecological restoration program. GTGP played a positive role in reducing regional SES trade-off, but this positive effect was limited, reflecting the limitations of overemphasizing the conversion from farmland to forest and grassland. Regional SES resilience can be divided into four clusters, which were the key optimization zone for social system, the SES resilience safety zone, the key restoration zone for SES resilience, and the key optimization zone for ecological system. Adaptive adjustments for the GTGP in these zones should be taken to achieve maximum SES benefits in the future.

Objective: To achieve sustainable ecosystem management, it is necessary to understanding the complex relationships among multiple ecosystem services (ESs), especially in alpine ecosystems of the Northern Hemisphere where ESs have undergone significantly degradation. Therefore, a comprehensive exploration must be performed, from multiple time and spatial scales and perspectives, into the relationships and spatio-temporal changes of different ESs under climate warming. Method: We selected the Daxing’anling forest area, Inner Mongolia (DFAIM), which is both a sensitive, alpine ecosystem and an important ecological barrier in northern China, as the study area. We analyzed the local and overall relationships among four key ESs, soil conservation, water yield, carbon storage and habitat quality, using multiple methods at different time and spatial scales in 2013 and 2018. Further, we used the K-means clustering to identify ecosystem service bundles (ESBs) at different scales, and we proposed sustainable management strategies to optimize the ESs in this alpine ecosystems. Result: The main findings were as follows: (1) Most ES pairs had very significant synergistic relationships, but their synergistic strength did not increase from 2013 to 2018. The high-high synergies were mainly concentrated in the central DFAIM, while trade-offs and low-low synergies were concentrated in areas with more human interference. (2) Trade-offs dominated the relationships among all four ESs, which were widely distributed and significantly increased over time. The high synergies among all ESs were concentrated in the central and southern parts, but they decreased significantly over time. (3) The optimal number of ESBs in the DFAIM was five in both 2013 and 2018, at both the grid-scale and the forest management unit-scale. The distribution of ESBs was more fragmented at the grid-scale, but was relatively aggregated at the forestry management unit-scale. Changes in ESBs at the forestry management unit-scale became more pronounced over time. Conclusion: The local relationships between ES pairs were moderated and synergistic, but became more competitive over time. The overall relationships of the four ESs were dominated by trade-offs, with a significant increase in trade-off effects over time. Therefore, we suggested using our proposed ESBs to optimize ES management. These results can guide the implementation of sustainable integrated management strategies to optimize ESs supply levels in alpine ecosystems.

Resumo A discricionariedade dos agentes públicos vem ganhando importância como objeto de estudo por ser questão relevante na gestão e implementação de políticas públicas. Servidores públicos enfrentam decisões discricionárias de formas variadas, indo desde a construção de modos criativos para gerar bons impactos sociais até, no limite extremo, à inação, por medo de posterior responsabilização por conduta considerada indevida. Este estudo buscou compreender a experiência da discricionariedade para os servidores de carreiras de gestão e os dilemas existentes nessa atuação. Para tanto, procedeu-se a pesquisa qualitativa com especialistas em políticas públicas do estado de São Paulo e gestores governamentais do estado de Pernambuco. A pesquisa de campo englobou coleta por meio de 5 grupos focais. Na sequência, os dados foram analisados por meio da técnica da análise de conteúdo. Identificou-se que o principal dilema enfrentado pelos burocratas se encontra entre decidir dentro de sua competência e no melhor de seu conhecimento ou a inação, por medo de responsabilização, caso a decisão seja julgada como ilegal ou de má-fé. Por consequência, tem-se o chamado “apagão das canetas”. Há um constante trade-off entre a discricionariedade e a responsabilização, havendo meios pelos quais os servidores se valem para atenuar os riscos de sofrer sanções.

The trade-off and synergy relationship of ecosystem services is an important topic in the current assessment. The value of each service provided by the ecosystem is substantially affected by human activities, and conversely, its changes will also affect the relevant human decisions. Due to varying trade-offs among ecosystem services and synergies between them that can either increase or decrease, it is difficult to optimize multiple ecosystem services simultaneously, making it a huge challenge for ecosystem management. This study firstly develops a global Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) accounting framework. It uses remote sensing data with a spatial resolution of 1 km to estimate the ecosystem services of forests, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, and farmlands in 179 major countries in 2018. The results show that the range of global GEP values is USD 112–197 trillion, with an average value of USD 155 trillion (the constant price), and the ratio of GEP to gross domestic product (GDP) is 1.85. The trade-offs and the synergies among different ecosystem services in each continent and income group have been further explored. We found a correspondence between the income levels and the synergy among ecosystem services within each nation. Among specific ecosystem services, there are strong synergies between oxygen release, climate regulation, and carbon sequestration services. A trade-off relationship has been observed between flood regulation and other services, such as water conservation and soil retention services in low-income countries. The results will help clarify the roles and the feedback mechanisms between different stakeholders and provide a scientific basis for optimizing ecosystem management and implementing ecological compensation schemes to enhance human well-being.

Abstract Life‐history theory predicts that investment in reproduction should decrease survival (the ‘cost of reproduction’). It is often assumed that energy allocation drives such trade‐offs, with limited energy available for both reproduction and survival. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, maybe because survival costs of reproduction are only apparent when resources are limited. Here, we took advantage of a natural experiment created by fluctuating environmental conditions to compare energy expenditure of a seabird, the pelagic cormorant (Phalacrocorax pelagicus), between contrasting population‐scale scenarios of survival costs of reproduction. Operating leverage is one of the more popular parameters used in management practice and scientific research. However, in the literature, there are many definitions and methods of measurement, which are additionally presented imprecisely in both textbooks and scientific publications. This results in a great deal of freedom among authors in the selection of measures for estimating operating leverage and the interpretation of the results, which has a negative impact on functionality for synthesis and theory building. Although some authors made such reservations clear as early as the 1980s, the situation has not changed. Using a three-step process of asking questions relating to how it looks, how it works, and how it compares to other “somethings”, the article conducts a critical analysis of the operational leverage measures used in recent publications and proposes to organize and refine the concept of operational leverage as leverage to increase value added and profit at a given output level using a trade-off mechanism between variable and fixed costs. Finally, the article suggests directions for future research and provides tips on how to incorporate the proposed concept of operating leverage into empirical research.

The synergistic effect between heterogeneous structures has been proved to enhance the strength and plasticity of alloys, especially in the context of single-phase face-centered cubic (FCC) high-entropy alloys with low stacking fault energy. This study explores the synergistic effects of heterogeneous structures on the strength and plasticity of single-phase FCC FeCoCrNiMo0.2 high-entropy alloys. Through a combination of cryogenic rolling and annealing at 1000 °C for 0.5 h (RA-1000), the alloy demonstrates exceptional strength-ductility synergy and work-hardening ability. The heterogeneous structure comprises fine grains, nano-scale rich- (Cr, Mo) σ phase, and high-density annealing twins. The interaction of σ precipitation and FCC matrix induces heterogeneous deformation-induced strengthening (HDI), while annealing twins and stacking faults act as barriers to dislocation movement, enhancing strength and ductility through a dynamic Hall-Petch effect. Additionally, chemically ordered structures, ordered L12 phase, and type 63 topologically close-packed phases in RA-1000 alloys contribute to improved strain hardening via anti-phase boundaries. This work provides valuable insights for designing multi-scale heterogeneous structures to strengthen high-entropy alloys.

An experiment was conducted to examine how dietary interventions reducing enteric methane (CH4) emissions influence manure CH4 emissions in biogas production (as biochemical methane potential (BMP)) or under static conditions mimicking natural manure storage conditions. Experimental treatments consisted of a factorial arrangement of high (HF: 0.65) or low (LF: 0.35) levels of forage and 0 or 50 g of rapeseed oil per kg of diet dry matter. Oil supplementation reduced daily enteric CH4 emissions, especially in the HF diet, by 20%. Greater dietary concentrate proportion reduced CH4 yield and intensity (6 and 12%, respectively) and decreased pH, increased total volatile fatty acids, and molar proportions of butyrate and valerate in feces incubated under static conditions. Oil supplementation increased daily BMP and BMP calculated per unit of organic matter (OM) (17 and 15%, respectively). Increased dietary concentrate had no impact on daily BMP and BMP per unit of OM, whereas it reduced daily CH4 production by 89% and CH4 per unit of OM by 91% under static conditions. Dietary oil supplementation tended to decrease fecal CH4 production per unit of digestible OM (23%) under static conditions. Diets had no impact on the alpha diversity of ruminal prokaryotes. After incubation, the fecal prokaryote community was significantly less diverse. Diets had no effect on alpha diversity in the BMP experiment, but static trial fecal samples originating from the HF diet showed significantly lower diversity compared with the LF diet. Overall, the tested dietary interventions reduced enteric CH4 emissions and reduced or tended to reduce manure CH4 emissions under static conditions, indicating a lack of trade-off between enteric and manure CH4 emissions. The potential for increasing CH4 yields in biogas industries due to dietary interventions could lead to a sustainable synergy between farms and industry.

Abstract Background In the evolution from unicellular to multicellular life forms, natural selection favored reduced cell proliferation and even programmed cell death if this increased organismal fitness. Could reduced individual fertility or even programmed organismal death similarly increase the fitness of colonies of closely-related metazoan organisms? This possibility is at least consistent with evolutionary theory, and has been supported by computer modelling. Caenorhabditis elegans has a boom and bust life history, where populations of nematodes that are sometimes near clonal subsist on and consume food patches, and then generate dauer larva dispersal propagules. A recent study of an in silico model of C. elegans predicted that one determinant of colony fitness (measured as dauer yield) is minimization of futile food consumption (i.e. that which does not contribute to dauer yield). One way to achieve this is to optimize colony population structure by adjustment of individual fertility. Results Here we describe development of a C. elegans colony fitness assay, and its use to investigate the effect of altering population structure on colony fitness after population bust. Fitness metrics measured were speed of dauer production, and dauer yield, an indirect measure of efficiency of resource utilization (i.e. conversion of food into dauers). We find that with increasing founder number, speed of dauer production increases (due to earlier bust) but dauer yield rises and falls. In addition, some dauer recovery was detected soon after the post-colony bust peak of dauer yield, suggesting possible bet hedging among dauers. Conclusions These results suggest the presence of a fitness trade-off at colony level between speed and efficiency of resource utilization in C. elegans. They also provide indirect evidence that population structure is a determinant of colony level fitness, potentially by affecting level of futile food consumption.

AbstractThe paper investigates aggregation bias by comparing the risk and returns characteristics of stock exchange-traded shares and Treasury bills (T’bills) in Ghana. The study uses end of period annualized data on T’bills and stocks returns, and inflation from 1990 to 2020. We mainly consider four separate investment periods: 1990–2000, 2001–2010, 2011–2020, and 1990–2020 (i.e. the aggregated period) in order to determine possible aggregation bias occurring from lumping the years together. We measure average annual returns, standard deviations, co-efficient of variations, Sharpe ratio, ANOVA, Jarque-Bera test, maximum drawdowns (MDD), and correlation analysis to determine risk and return characteristics of the two instruments. The study finds that T'bills compared to stocks shows higher returns yet lower risk, thereby indicating an inverted yield curve. Levene’s Test for Equality of Variances indicates stocks significantly outperformed T’bills over the 31-year aggregated period. The study reveals the presence of aggregation bias as stock and T’bill risk and return characteristics of two segregated periods (i.e. 1990–2000 and 2011–2020) contradict the general expectation of risk-return trade-off theory contrary to that of the aggregated period. The MDD, ANOVA results, Anova F-test and Welch F-test reveal aggregation bias for T’bills but not for stocks. We recommend future studies to ensure that analysis and conclusions made do not suffer aggregation bias by disaggregating aggregated units.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a food-borne pathogen, which is often isolated from various seafood products. In this study, two kinds of bacteriophages was isolated from the offshore sediments samples. The anti-phage mutant strain were obtained after seventeen rounds of co-culture of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and mixed bacteriophage, multigroup sequencing was carried out on spontaneous the anti-phage mutant strain and the wild-type strain. We used the Sanger sequencing to verify the accuracy of the mutation sites. Biolog GEN III MicroPlates were used to evaluate the metabolic capacity of wild-type strains and the anti-phage mutant strain. In this study, we found that with flaG gene (slight homology to N terminus of multiple flagellins) mutated, making the bacteriophage unable to absorb to the cell surface of the host. And, the growth competitiveness of the anti-phage mutant strain is lower than the wild-type strain. These results indicated that the fitness cost, including loss of the growth competitiveness, constitutes a barrier to the prevalence of these defense mechanisms. And the selection pressure on different anti-phage strategies depends on the trade-off between mortality imposed by bacteriophages and fitness cost of the defense strategy under the given environmental conditions. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the phage-host interaction and phage resistance in Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Our study provided knowledge for the evolutionary adaption of bacteria against the bacteriophage, which could add more information to understand the phage resistance mechanism before applying in the industry.

Balancing the biomass requirements of different functions for the purpose of population reproduction and persistence can be challenging for alpine plants due to extreme environmental stresses from both above- and below-ground sources. The presence of ecosystem engineers in alpine ecosystems effectively alleviates microenvironmental stresses, hence promoting the survival and growth of other less stress-tolerant species. However, the influence of ecosystem engineers on plant resource allocation strategies remains highly unexplored. In this study, we compared resource allocation strategies, including biomass accumulation, reproductive effort (RE), root fraction (RF), as well as relationships between different functions, among four alpine plant species belonging to Gentianaceae across bare ground, tussock grass-, cushion-, and shrub-engineered microhabitats. Shrub-engineered microhabitats exerted the strongest effects on regulating plant resource allocation patterns, followed by tussock grass- and cushion-engineered microhabitats. Additionally, apart from microhabitats, population background and plant life history also significantly influenced resource allocation strategies. Generally, plants established within engineered microhabitats exhibited higher biomass accumulation, as well as increased flower, leaf and stem production. Furthermore, individuals within engineered microhabitats commonly displayed lower RF, indicating a greater allocation of resources to above-ground functions while reducing allocation to root development. RE of annual plants was significantly higher than that of perennial plants. However, individuals of annual plants within engineered microhabitats showed lower RE compared to their counterparts in bare ground habitats; whereas perennial species demonstrated similar RE between microhabitat types. Moreover, RE was generally independent of plant size in bare-ground habitats but exhibited size-dependency in certain populations for some species within specific engineered microhabitat types. However, size-dependency did exist for absolute reproductive and root biomass allocation in most of the cases examined here. No trade-offs were observed between flower mass and flower number, nor between leaf mass and leaf number. The capacity of ecosystem engineers to regulate resource allocation strategies in associated plants was confirmed. However, the resource allocation patterns resulted synergistically from the ecosystem engineering effects, population environmental backgrounds, and plant life history strategies. In general, such regulations can improve individual survival and reproductive potential, potentially promoting population persistence in challenging alpine environments.

Changes in climate and land use represent significant risks of biodiversity loss globally, affect ecological stability, impact nature’s contributions to people (NCP, i.e. ecosystem services) and compromise human livelihood. As framings of conservation evolve to consider the interdependence between species and human needs, there is a growing recognition of the importance of NCP and biodiversity in conservation actions. However, knowledge on the interactions and spatial repartition of NCP and biodiversity remains limited. Here we show a comprehensive spatial assessment for 15 NCP and one biodiversity – distribution of threatened species – indicators in Switzerland. Indicators values were computed using a panel of mapping and modelling methods extracted from the literature, or specifically developed for this study. Through the analysis of their relationships, we reveal significant trade-offs and synergies in the spatial repartition of these indicators. Results from a spatial bundle analysis performed on the 16 indicators revealed the existence of four bundles showing a heterogeneous repartition over the Swiss landscape. Furthermore, we identified that topography (slope), climate (temperature and precipitations), and habitat (forest and meadows) were among the most influential factors to explain the spatial distribution of the four bundles. We conclude that various significant relationships exist between NCP and biodiversity indicators in Switzerland, emphasizing the importance of informed conservation approaches considering both NCP and biodiversity supply. This work helps fill the gap in our understanding of the links among different NCP, between NCP and biodiversity, and highlight their relationship to climate and land use, providing key insights for optimizing conservation efforts.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is a promising energy-efficient technology designed to satisfy the demands of future networks by efficiently sharing radio resources. In NOMA, the same radio resource is simultaneously assigned to two users at different power levels based on the NOMA-power domain. Resource allocation in NOMA presents a non-convex challenge, characterized as a non-deterministic polynomial (NP-hard) problem. This involves user and channel assignment and power allocation, making it an extraordinarily complex task to achieve an optimal solution. In this work, Simulated Annealing (SA) is proposed as an optimization technique for resource allocation in an energy-efficient downlink NOMA system. This resource allocation scheme addresses user and channel assignment, as well as power allocation, using SA as an efficient standalone approach to maximize energy efficiency in NOMA. SA is utilized to execute the assignment of users to channels, distribute the necessary power for each channel, and determine the power ratio among users sharing the same channel. The results obtained demonstrate a significant improvement in energy efficiency, outperforming the existing numerical methods by 22 %. The proposed SA scheme not only achieves a close optimal solution but also in less computational time, offering sufficient reliability in terms of energy efficiency enhancement when compared to the existing numerical method.

Airborne dispersal of microorganisms is a ubiquitous migration mechanism, allowing otherwise independent microbial habitats to interact via biomass exchange. Here, we study the ecological implications of such advective transport using a simple spatial model for bacteria–phage interactions: the population dynamics at each habitat are described by classical Lotka–Volterra equations; however, species populations are taken as integer, that is, a discrete, positive extinction threshold exists. Spatially, species can spread from habitat to habitat by stochastic airborne dispersal. In any given habitat, the spatial biomass exchange causes incessant population density oscillations, which, as a consequence, occasionally drive species to extinction. The balance between local extinction events and dispersal-induced migration allows species to persist globally, even though diversity would be depleted by competitive exclusion, locally. The disruptive effect of biomass dispersal thus acts to increase microbial diversity, allowing system-scale coexistence of multiple species that would not coexist locally.

Animals are expected to respond flexibly to changing circumstances, with multimodal signalling providing potential plasticity in social interactions. While numerous studies have documented context-dependent behavioural trade-offs in terrestrial species, far less work has considered such decision-making in fish, especially in natural conditions. Coral reef ecosystems host 25% of all known marine species, making them hotbeds of competition and predation. We conducted experiments with wild Ambon damselfish (Pomacentrus amboinensis) to investigate context-dependent responses to a conspecific intruder; specifically, how nest defence is influenced by an elevated predation risk. We found that nest-defending male Ambon damselfish responded aggressively to a conspecific intruder, spending less time sheltering and more time interacting, as well as signalling both visually and acoustically. In the presence of a model predator compared to a model herbivore, males spent less time interacting with the intruder, with a tendency towards reduced investment in visual displays compensated for by an increase in acoustic signalling instead. We therefore provide ecologically valid evidence that the context experienced by an individual can affect its behavioural responses and multimodal displays towards conspecific threats.

Suburban rural ecosystem, especially those adjacent to large cities, constitute a key component of rural and urban sustainability and resilience. However, urbanisation often exerts a negative impact on suburban rural landscapes, leading to ecological degradation. Despite making a significant contribution to multiple ecosystem services (ESs), suburban rural landscapes do not receive commensurate attention compared to urban themes, particularly on a smaller scale. We explored key drivers of land use dynamics in the suburban rural area of Jiangning, Nanjing, China, via a quantitative statistical mapping approach, utilising multi-source geospatial data from 2005 to 2018 and relevant ecological and socio-economic data that would enable the quantification of four key ecosystem services. Landscape functional zones characterised by ESs bundles were also identified, and their association with surrounding landscape attributes was statistically analysed. Our results highlighted urbanisation-induced population growth as the macro-context driving the development of Jiangning. The analysis yielded five distinct landscape functional zones (LFZs) that displayed synergistic relationships between their ESs, namely, carbon storage and soil retention, n-output and water yield. Furthermore, these results linked LFZs to environmental spatial characteristics and created detailed landscape elements for each zone, thereby emphasising the need for more comprehensive landscape planning and designing for ecological transition zones. We were thus able to imply zoning attributes-based rural landscape designs that may optimise ecological benefits. This study provides a systematic method to integrate ESs, landscape functional zones, and environmental spatial characteristics into the whole process management of suburban rural landscape planning. It aims to promote sustainable multifunctionality in suburban rural areas by providing spatial-level management indicators and landscape element-level design strategies for each LFZ, thereby revitalising the countryside from the perspective of landscape architecture.

Student dropout prediction (SDP) in educational research has gained prominence for its role in analyzing student learning behaviors through time series models. Traditional methods often focus singularly on either prediction accuracy or earliness, leading to sub-optimal interventions for at-risk students. This issue underlines the necessity for methods that effectively manage the trade-off between accuracy and earliness. Recognizing the limitations of existing methods, this study introduces a novel approach leveraging multi-objective reinforcement learning (MORL) to optimize the trade-off between prediction accuracy and earliness in SDP tasks. By framing SDP as a partial sequence classification problem, we model it through a multiple-objective Markov decision process (MOMDP), incorporating a vectorized reward function that maintains the distinctiveness of each objective, thereby preventing information loss and enabling more nuanced optimization strategies. Furthermore, we introduce an advanced envelope Q-learning technique to foster a comprehensive exploration of the solution space, aiming to identify Pareto-optimal strategies that accommodate a broader spectrum of preferences. The efficacy of our model has been rigorously validated through comprehensive evaluations on real-world MOOC datasets. These evaluations have demonstrated our model’s superiority, outperforming existing methods in achieving optimal trade-off between accuracy and earliness, thus marking a significant advancement in the field of SDP.

Nestboxes are commonly used to increase the number and quality of nest sites available to birds that usually use tree cavities and are considered an important conservation intervention. Although usually safer than natural cavities, birds nesting in simple, unmodified wooden nestboxes remain at risk of depredation. Accordingly, numerous design and placement modifications have been developed to ‘predator-proof’ nestboxes. These include: (1) adding metal plates around entrance holes to prevent enlargement; (2) affixing wire mesh to side panels; (3) deepening boxes to increase distance to nest cup; (4) creating external entrance ‘tunnels’ or internal wooden ledges; (5) using more robust construction materials; (6) developing photosensitive shutters to exclude nocturnal predators; (7) using baffles to block climbing mammals; and (8) regular replacement and relocation. However, the benefits and costs of these modifications are not always well understood. In this global review, we collate information on predator-proofing avian nestboxes designed for tree cavity-nesting birds to assess the efficacy of techniques for different predators (mammalian, avian, and reptilian) in different contexts. We critique the potential for modifications to have unintended consequences—including increasing nest building effort, altering microclimate, reducing provisioning rate, and elevating ectoparasite and microbial loads—to identify hidden costs. We conclude by highlighting remaining gaps in knowledge and providing guidance on optimal modifications in different contexts.

Abstract Background The relative treatment effects estimated from network meta-analysis can be employed to rank treatments from the most preferable to the least preferable option. These treatment hierarchies are typically based on ranking metrics calculated from a single outcome. Some approaches have been proposed in the literature to account for multiple outcomes and individual preferences, such as the coverage area inside a spie chart, that, however, does not account for a trade-off between efficacy and safety outcomes. We present the net-benefit standardised area within a spie chart, $$SAWIS$$ SAWIS to explore the changes in treatment performance with different trade-offs between benefits and harms, according to a particular set of preferences. Methods We combine the standardised areas within spie charts for efficacy and safety/acceptability outcomes with a value λ specifying the trade-off between benefits and harms. We derive absolute probabilities and convert outcomes on a scale between 0 and 1 for inclusion in the spie chart. Results We illustrate how the treatments in three published network meta-analyses perform as the trade-off λ varies. The decrease of the $$SAWIS$$ SAWIS quantity appears more pronounced for some drugs, e.g. haloperidol. Changes in treatment performance seem more frequent when SUCRA is employed as outcome measures in the spie charts. Conclusions $$SAWIS$$ SAWIS should not be interpreted as a ranking metric but it is a simple approach that could help identify which treatment is preferable when multiple outcomes are of interest and trading-off between benefits and harms is important.

Amine transaminases (ATAs) catalyze the asymmetric amination of prochiral ketones or aldehydes to their corresponding chiral amines. However, the trade-off between activity and stability in enzyme engineering represents a major obstacle to the practical application of ATAs. Overcoming this trade-off is important for developing robustly engineered enzymes and a universal approach for ATAs. Herein, we modified the binding pocket of ω-ATA from Aspergillus terreus (AtATA) to identify the key amino acid residues controlling the activity and stability of AtATA toward 1-acetonaphthone. We discovered a structural switch comprising four key amino acid sites (R128, V149, L182, and L187), as well as the “best” mutant (AtATA_D224K/V149A/L182F/L187F; termed M4). Compared to the parent enzyme AtATA_D224K (AtATA-Pa), M4 increased the catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km1-acetonaphthone, where kcat is the constant of catalytic activities and is 10.1 min−1, Km1-acetonaphthone is Michaelis-Menten constant and is 1.7 mmol·L–1) and half-life (t1/2) by 59-fold to 5.9 L·min−1·mmol−1 and by 1.6-fold to 46.9 min, respectively. Moreover, using M4 as the biocatalyst, we converted a 20 mmol·L–1 aliquot of 1-acetonaphthone in a 50 mL scaled-up system to the desired product, (R)-(+)-1(1-naphthyl)ethylamine ((R)-NEA), with 78% yield and high enantiomeric purity (R > 99.5%) within 10 h. M4 also displayed significantly enhanced activity toward various 1-acetonaphthone analogs. The related structural properties derived by analyzing structure and sequence information of robust ATAs illustrated their enhanced activity and thermostability. Strengthening of intramolecular interactions and expansion of the angle between the substrate-binding pocket and the pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP)-binding pocket contributed to synchronous enhancement of ATA thermostability and activity. Moreover, this pocket engineering strategy successfully transferred enhanced activity and thermostability to three other ATAs, which exhibited 8%–22% sequence similarity with AtATA. This research has important implications for overcoming the trade-off between ATA activity and thermostability.

Abstract Background Clonal plants can successfully adapt to various ecosystems. A trade-off between sexual and clonal reproduction is generally assumed in clonal plants, which may be influenced both by the characteristics of the plant itself and environmental conditions. Currently, it is unclear how climate change, and specifically warming and increased precipitation, might affect sexual and clonal reproduction in clonal plants. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate both the sexual and clonal reproduction responses of Stipa breviflora to warming and increased precipitation. A controlled experiment was conducted by inducing increases in precipitation (ambient condition, 25% and 50% increases) and warming (ambient temperature, 1.5 °C and 3.0 °C increases). Results Warming significantly influenced both the ratio of reproductive ramet shoot biomass to total shoot biomass, and the ratio of reproductive ramet number to total ramet number. Additionally, the ratio of reproductive ramet shoot biomass to total shoot biomass was also significantly affected by increased precipitation. Increased precipitation benefited sexual reproduction, while effects of warming on reproductive and/or vegetative ramets varied from negative to positive depending on precipitation conditions. There was no relationship between the number or shoot biomass of reproductive ramets and vegetative ramets. Reproductive ramets displayed greater sensitivity to climate change than vegetative ramets. Conclusions The findings of our study suggest that there was no trade-off between sexual and clonal reproduction in S. breviflora. The combined impact of warming and increased precipitation promoted sexual reproduction but did not inhibit clonal reproduction. Clonal plants with the capacity for both sexual and clonal reproduction, may cope with climate change well via clonal reproduction, ensuring their survival.

Common bean is often considered a woman’s crop because they play important roles from production to marketing. However, breeding programs often focus on farmers without adequate attention to the interconnectedness between gender and other socioeconomic variables and how they influence varietal and trait preferences of other value chain actors. This study analyzed gendered differences in bean production and trade, implications of socioeconomic conditions on bean production and marketing, and the role of partnerships in closing gender gaps in the bean value chain in Zimbabwe. The results obtained from the analysis of survey data collected from 131 farmers and 18 trades revealed beans as a dual-purpose crop for male and female farmers and traders. Varietal and trait preferences were the same for both male and female farmers and traders but were prioritized differently. While female farmers prioritized cooking time, men farmers prioritized biofortification and market traits. Whereas male traders equally preferred price, color, and appearance, female traders prioritized price over color and appearance. Poverty and marital statuses of respondents influenced the number of varieties preferred by male and female farmers. We found that the effectiveness of partnerships in closing gender gaps in marketing is variety specific. While having partners closed the gender gaps in the marketing of the NUA45 variety, such partnerships did not have the same effect on closing gender gaps in the marketing of Cherry, Gloria, and other varieties. The results show that considering socioeconomic characteristics of actors and partnerships can reduce gender disparities in the bean value chain. Therefore, breeding programs should recognize the interconnectedness between socioeconomic variables and gender when developing breeding products.

Abstract Inducible defences can improve survival in variable environments by allowing individuals to produce defences if they detect predators. These defences are often expressed as inter‐related developmental, morphological, and behavioural changes. However, producing defences can incur costs, which may be expressed immediately and/or during subsequent life stages. In Australia, waterborne cues of potentially cannibalistic conspecific tadpoles induce hatchlings of invasive cane toads to accelerate their developmental rate, thereby reducing their window of vulnerability. However, the mechanisms and costs of such accelerated development are poorly understood, and whether cane toad embryos show cannibal‐induced plasticity in other traits is unknown. Here, we found no evidence of altered time of hatching for embryos exposed to non‐feeding conspecific cannibal tadpole cues. Additionally, hatchling dispersal behaviours were not affected by exposure to these cues. However, developmental acceleration of hatchlings induced by exposure to tadpole cues was accompanied by reduced hatchling growth, indicating a trade‐off between these processes. At the conclusion of the hatchling stage, cannibal‐exposed individuals were smaller and morphologically distinct from control siblings. This size reduction affected performance during the subsequent tadpole stage: smaller cannibal‐exposed individuals were more likely to die, and initial size tended to be positively associated with subsequent tadpole growth and development across treatments (respectively, p = .07 and p = .06). However, even accounting for variation in initial size, there was an additional negative effect of cannibal exposure on tadpole growth and development, demonstrating that the fitness costs associated with developmental acceleration are not entirely attributable to size reductions.

Foraging behavior of pollinators is shaped by, among other factors, the conflict between maximizing resource intake and minimizing predation risk; yet, empirical studies quantifying variation in both forces are rare, compared to those investigating each separately. Here, we discuss the importance of simultaneously assessing bottom-up and top-down forces in the study of plant-pollinator interactions, and propose a conceptual and testable graphical hypothesis for pollinator foraging behavior and plant fitness outcomes as a function of varying floral rewards and predation risk. In low predation risk scenarios, no noticeable changes in pollinator foraging behavior are expected, with reward levels affecting only the activity threshold. However, as predation risk increases we propose that there is a decrease in foraging behavior, with a steeper decline as plants are more rewarding and profitable. Lastly, in high predation risk scenarios, we expect foraging to approach zero, regardless of floral rewards. Thus, we propose that pollinator foraging behavior follows an inverse S-shape curve, with more pronounced changes in foraging activity at intermediate levels of predation risk, especially in high reward systems. We present empirical evidence that is consistent with this hypothesis. In terms of the consequences for plant fitness, we propose that specialized plant-pollinator systems should be more vulnerable to increased predation risk, with a steeper and faster decline in plant fitness, compared with generalist systems, in which pollinator redundancy can delay or buffer the effect of predators. Moreover, whereas we expect that specialist systems follows a similar inverse S-shape curve, in generalist systems we propose three different scenarios as a function not only of reward level but also compatibility, mating-system, and the interplay between growth form and floral display. The incorporation of trade-offs in pollinator behavior balancing the conflicting demands between feeding and predation risk has a promising future as a key feature enabling the development of more complex foraging models.

Understanding understory seedling regeneration mechanisms is important for the sustainable development of temperate primary forests in the context of increasingly intense climate warming events. The poor regeneration of dominant tree species, however, is one of the biggest challenges it faces at the moment. Especially, the regeneration of the shade-intolerant Quercus mongolica seedling is difficult in primary forests, which contrasts with the extreme abundance of understory seedlings in secondary forests. The mechanism behind the interesting phenomenon is still unknown. This study used in-situ monitoring and nursery-controlled experiment to investigate the survival rate, growth performance, as well as nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentrations and pools of various organ tissues of seedlings for two consecutive years, further analyze the understory light availability and simulate the foliage carbon (C) gain in the secondary and primary forest. Results suggested that seedlings in the secondary forest had greater biomass allocation aboveground, height and specific leaf area (SLA) in summer, which allowed the seedling to survive longer in the canopy closure period. High light availability and positive C gain in early spring and late autumn are key factors affecting the growth and survival of understory seedlings in the secondary forest, whereas seedlings in the primary forest had annual negative carbon gain. Through the growing season, the total NSC concentrations of seedlings gradually decreased, whereas those of seedlings in the secondary forest increased significantly in autumn, and were mainly stored in roots for winter consumption and the following year's summer shade period, which was verified by the nursery-controlled experiment that simulated autumn enhanced light availability improved seedling survival rate and NSC pools. In conclusion, our results revealed the survival trade-off strategies of Quercus mongolica seedlings and highlighted the necessity of high light availability during the spring and autumn phenological periods for shade-intolerant tree seedling recruitment.

Abstract Background Numerous studies in the past have expanded our understanding of the genetic differences of global distributed cyanobacteria that originated around billions of years ago, however, unraveling how gene gain and loss drive the genetic evolution of cyanobacterial species, and the trade-off of these evolutionary forces are still the central but poorly understood issues. Results To delineate the contribution of gene flow in mediating the hereditary differentiation and shaping the microbial evolution, a global genome-wide study of bloom-forming cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa species complex, provided robust evidence for genetic diversity, reflected by enormous variation in gene repertoire among various strains. Mathematical extrapolation showed an ‘open’ microbial pan-genome of M. aeruginosa species, since novel genes were predicted to be introduced after new genomes were sequenced. Identification of numerous horizontal gene transfer’s signatures in genome regions of interest suggested that genome expansion via transformation and phage-mediated transduction across bacterial lineage as an evolutionary route may contribute to the differentiation of Microcystis functions (e.g., carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and energy metabolism). Meanwhile, the selective loss of some dispensable genes at the cost of metabolic versatility is as a mean of adaptive evolution that has the potential to increase the biological fitness. Conclusions Now that the recruitment of novel genes was accompanied by a parallel loss of some other ones, a trade-off in gene content may drive the divergent differentiation of M. aeruginosa genomes. Our study provides a genetic framework for the evolution of M. aeruginosa species and illustrates their possible evolutionary patterns.

As a Muslim-majority country, Indonesia possesses significant potential to harness Islamic banking as a key driver of its economy. This study aims to examine the effects of Sharia-compliant financing provided by Islamic banks in Indonesia on the unemployment rate and economic growth. The analysis utilizes data on Sharia-compliant financing for non-bank third parties, open unemployment rate, and gross regional domestic product at constant prices as proxies for economic growth. Annual panel data from 33 provinces in Indonesia covering 2010 to 2021 are employed. The analysis employs a fixed-effect regression model using the generalized least squares (GLS) estimator. The findings of this study indicate that Sharia-compliant financing has a positive impact on reducing the unemployment rate and fostering economic growth. However, it is observed that the effectiveness of Sharia-compliant financing in reducing unemployment diminishes as the share of such financing increases. Conversely, a higher market share of Sharia-compliant financing is associated with a more significant role in promoting economic growth. These findings highlight a trade-off between the impact of Sharia-compliant financing on growth and unemployment, suggesting that although growth driven by Sharia-compliant financing in Indonesia is present, it may need more inclusivity and more optimal job creation.

Behaviour is often the fundamental driver of disease transmission, where behaviours of individuals can be seen to scale up to epidemiological patterns seen at the population level. Here we focus on animal behaviour, and its role in parasite transmission to track its knock-on consequences for parasitism, production and pollution. Livestock face a nutrition versus parasitism trade-off in grazing environments where faeces creates both a nutritional benefit, fertilizing the surrounding sward, but also a parasite risk from infective nematode larvae contaminating the sward. The grazing decisions of ruminants depend on the perceived costs and benefits of the trade-off, which depend on the variations in both environmental (e.g., amounts of faeces) and animal factors (e.g., physiological state). Such grazing decisions determine the intake of both nutrients and parasites, affecting livestock growth rates and production efficiency. This impacts on the greenhouse gas costs of ruminant livestock production via two main mechanisms: (1) slower growth results in longer durations on-farm and (2) parasitised animals produce more methane per unit food intake. However, the sensitivity of behaviour to host parasite state offers opportunities for early detection of parasitism and control. Remote monitoring technology such as accelerometers can detect parasite-induced sickness behaviours soon after exposure, before impacts on growth, and thus may be used for targeting individuals for early treatment. We conclude that livestock host x parasite interactions are at the centre of the global challenges of food security and climate change, and that understanding livestock behaviour can contribute to solving both.

Diversification at the plot level, through the use of intercropping (mixtures of crops), is an alternative to the conventional system of intensive agriculture, based on monospecific, usually single-variety canopies. Intercropping has been shown to provide benefits in terms of disease control. However, competition phenomena and the heterogeneity of the associated crops raise new ecological questions, particularly with regard to the dynamics and evolution of parasite populations. No study has assessed the potential impact of these associations on the dynamics of pathogenic species complexes. Changes in the nutritional status of plants and therefore in their physiological susceptibility to infection within intercropping systems could contribute to an increased diversity of ecological niches and thus affect the composition of the parasitic complex and its spatiotemporal dynamics. In this review, focusing on foliar diseases of fungal origin, and after outlining some elements of the biology and epidemiology of these fungal diseases, we will (i) describe the mechanisms that contribute to the composition of disease clusters and that drive interactions, but we will also review the strategies that these foliar diseases have adopted to deal with these co-infections; (ii) define how intercropping can lead to changes in epidemic dynamics, in particular by presenting the mechanisms that have a direct and indirect effect on disease evolution; and (iii) present the approach that should be adopted to properly study intercropping correctly in a multi-infection situation.

Humans maintain an intricate balance between storing information in visual working memory (VWM) and just-in-time sampling of the external world, rooted in a trade-off between the cost of maintaining items in VWM versus retrieving information as it is needed. Previous studies have consistently shown that one prerequisite of just-in-time sampling is a high degree of availability of external information, and that introducing a delay before being able to access information led participants to rely less on the external world and more on VWM. However, these studies manipulated availability in such a manner that the cost of sampling was stable and predictable. It is yet unclear whether participants become less reliant on external information when it is more difficult to factor in the cost of sampling that information. In two experiments, participants copied an example layout from the left to the right side of the screen. In Experiment 1, intermittent occlusion of the example layout led participants to attempt to encode more items per inspection than when the layout was constantly available, but this did not consistently result in more correct placements. However, these findings could potentially be explained by inherent differences in how long the example layout could be viewed. Therefore in Experiment 2, the example layout only became available after a gaze-contingent delay, which could be constant or variable. Here, the introduction of any delay led to increased VWM load compared to no delay, although the degree of variability in the delay did not alter behaviour. These results reaffirm that the nature of when we engage VWM is dynamical, and suggest that any disruption to the continuous availability of external information is the main driver of increased VWM usage relative to whether availability is predictable or not.

Grasslands are managed to provide multiple goods and services. During recent decades, abandonment of marginal grasslands and intensification of the most productive sites resulted in biodiversity losses and reduced ecosystem services (ESs). Moreover, invasion by unwanted plants impaired ESs, as seen in Jacobaea aquatica, a poisonous native invader in pre-alpine grasslands of Central Europe. Invasion by this plant compromises fodder quality and endangers animal health, resulting in abandonment of grassland use. We tested different management regimes to reduce J. aquatica in wet grasslands of Southern Germany and assessed how its regulation affects grassland multifunctionality. We monitored indicators associated with productivity and conservation, such as the abundance of J. aquatica, forage quality, yield, abundance of specialists, and pollinator-relevant plants. Intensive management favoured multifunctionality by promoting productivity and biodiversity, yet also increasing the abundance of J. aquatica. Reduced management regulates J. aquatica cover close to an acceptable threshold while also reducing ESs. Thus, we conclude that moderate management strikes a balance between the control of the poisonous plant and the supply of grassland multifunctionality.

Abstract Background The great species diversity of Lithocarpus is associated with interspecific fruit morphological variation, represented by acorn (AC) and enclosed receptacle (ER) fruit types. Species representing both fruit types co-occur in the same forests and share two distribution centers in southern China and southeastern Asia. The predation selection hypothesis suggests that the fruit morphological mechanical trade-off between two fruit types could represent divergent dispersal strategies under varied predation pressures. By integrating phylogenetic construction with fruit morphometric study, we tried to verify the predation selection hypothesis and elucidate the fruit type evolution of Lithocarpus, which is critical in interpreting the distribution and diversification of the genus. Results We identified the functional trade-off between the two fruit types: ER species have bigger seeds which are enclosed mainly by receptacle representing stronger physical defense; whereas the seeds of AC species are smaller and enclosed mainly by thin pericarp representing lower mechanical protection. Despite some reversals from ER back to AC, the ancestral state reconstruction in combination with thermal analysis supports the hypothesis that ER is the derived fruit type from AC-like ancestors independently across all clades. Conclusion Our results support the predation selection hypothesis by verifying the mechanical trade-off between the two fruit types. We propose a divergent selection theory for the two fruit types: the seed size and mechanical defense of AC species become smaller, whereas those of ER species become larger and require more morphological modifications in the receptacle. This signified the importance of the receptacle in differentiating the two fruit types and in the fruit morphological modification through evolutionary time. We found that the ER-type species evolved independently in all clades and across varied climates from tropical to warm temperate regions. As ER fruits are products of convergent evolution, we propose to examine the predation and dispersal variation between two fruit types in the future to verify whether predation selection is the reason behind fruit type evolution of the stone oaks.

The immune system is a network of molecules, signaling pathways, transcription, and effector modulation that controls, mitigates, or eradicates agents that may affect the integrity of the host. In mosquitoes, the innate immune system is highly efficient at combating foreign organisms but has the capacity to tolerate vector-borne diseases. These implications lead to replication, dissemination, and ultimately the transmission of pathogenic organisms when feeding on a host. In recent years, it has been discovered that the innate immune response of mosquitoes can trigger an enhanced immunity response to the stimulus of a previously encountered pathogen. This phenomenon, called immune priming, is characterized by a molecular response that prevents the replication of viruses, parasites, or bacteria in the body. It has been documented that immune priming can be stimulated through homologous organisms or molecules, although it has also been documented that closely related pathogens can generate an enhanced immune response to a second stimulus with a related organism. However, the cost involved in this immune response has not been characterized through the transmission of the immunological experience from parents to offspring by transgenerational immune priming (TGIP) in mosquitoes. Here, we address the impact on the rates of oviposition, hatching, development, and immune response in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the mothers of which were stimulated with dengue virus serotypes 2 and/or 4, having found a cost of TGIP on the development time of the progeny of mothers with heterologous infections, with respect to mothers with homologous infections. Our results showed a significant effect on the sex ratio, with females being more abundant than males. We found a decrease in transcripts of the siRNA pathway in daughters of mothers who had been exposed to an immune challenge with DV. Our research demonstrates that there are costs and benefits associated with TGIP in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes exposed to DV. Specifically, priming results in a lower viral load in the offspring of mothers who have previously been infected with the virus. Although some results from tests of two dengue virus serotypes show similarities, such as the percentage of pupae emergence, there are differences in the percentage of adult emergence, indicating differences in TGIP costs even within the same virus with different serotypes. This finding has crucial implications in the context of dengue virus transmission in endemic areas where multiple serotypes circulate simultaneously.

IntroductionIsland ecosystems often have a disproportionate number of endemic species and unique and fragile functional characteristics. However, few examples of this type of ecosystem have been reported.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive field study on Neilingding Island, southern China. The leaf samples of 79 subtropical forest tree species were obtained and their functional traits were studied in the dry and wet seasons to explain the relationships between plant functional traits and soil nutrients.ResultsWe found a greater availability of soil moisture content (SMC) and nutrients in the wet season than in the dry season. The values of wet season soil available phosphorus (5.97 mg·kg−1), SMC (17.67%), and soil available potassium (SAK, 266.96 mg·kg−1) were significantly higher than those of the dry season. The leaf dry matter content, specific leaf weight, leaf density, leaf total carbon, leaf total nitrogen, leaf total calcium, and the N/P and C/P ratios of leaves were all significantly higher in the dry season than in the wet season, being 18.06%, 12.90%, 12.00%, 0.17%, 3.41%, 9.02%, 26.80%, and 24.14% higher, respectively. In contrast, the leaf area (51.01 cm2), specific leaf area (152.76 cm2·g−1), leaf water content (0.59%), leaf total nitrogen (1.31%), leaf total phosphorus (0.14%), and leaf total magnesium (0.33%) were much lower in the dry season than in the wet one. There were significant pairwise correlations between leaf functional traits, but the number and strength of correlations were significantly different in the dry and wet seasons. The SAK, soil total phosphorus (STP), and pH impacted plant leaf functional traits in the dry season, whereas in the wet season, they were affected by SAK, STP, pH, and NO3− (nitrate).DiscussionBoth soil nutrients and water availability varied seasonally and could cause variation in a number of leaf traits.

Low-carbon and efficient city, a sustainable city development mode, requires the land to carry more people and economy, but cause no ecological damage, which is essentially a trade-off among diverse land functional zones (LFZs), e.g. living, productive, and ecological lands, from a land system perspective. Unfortunately, there is little knowledge about how to trade off LFZs for building low-carbon and efficient cities. To fill the gap, the study first proposes a fine-grained LFZ mapping method to sort the land into seven kinds of LFZs based on multimodal geographic data; then, the study defines carbon efficiency (CE) as a reference to evaluate efficient cities considering their economics, society, and ecology; finally, the study presents a cross lasso regression method to explore how LFZ patterns as well as their temporal changes influence CE, based on which LFZ features are optimized at both national and city levels for improving CE and facilitating efficient cities. The proposed methods are verified in 30 major Chinese cities from 2015 to 2020. The experimental results indicate that the 30 cities have different LFZ patterns in area proportion, morphology, and temporal change, where LFZ proportions are master control factors to CE; and LFZ feature trade-off at national level works better than per city, as it can improve CE by 58.5% compared to that in 2020, which increases population carrying capacity by 88.5% and economy producing capacity by 81.0% with no change in carbon emission, or reduces carbon emission by 55.2% by keeping population and economy constant. These findings directly contribute to low-carbon and efficient city planning, and facilitating sustainable city development.

Three-breed rotational crossbreeding can improve the functional traits of dairy cows, but few farmers in most Western countries use it. This could be due to a lack of knowledge of its medium- and long-term effects on animal performance at the herd level, regardless of the initial states of the farm and herd, the crossbreeding programme(s) used and changes in farm management and structure while transitioning to it. We aimed at assessing changes in animal performance of dairy cattle herds transitioning towards three-breed rotational crossbreeding and at identifying factors that explained them. We sampled 13 French dairy cattle farms for which animal performance data were available for a 9-year period (2009–2017) and described their trends in herd management and the farming system when introducing crossbreeding. We calculated five herd performance variables: mean milk productivity per cow-year (MilkCow), mean Milk solids content (FatProtCont), and the percentages in the herd of cows with no more than 117 days open (FertileCow), with mean somatic cell score less than 4 over the lactation period (HealthyLact) and with four lactations or more (L4+). We defined 15 variables related to herd and farm structure and management. We applied linear regression to each variable over the study period and used the intercept and slope to describe their initial values in 2009 and their trends, respectively. We performed partial least squares (PLS) regression to assess relationships between the trends in herd performance variables and potential explanatory variables, including the initial values of herd performance variables and the initial values of and trends in herd and farm structure and management variables. Linear regressions showed that within herds, median MilkCow decreased (–177 kg/cow per year), FertileCow increased (+1.5%/year) and FatProtCont either remained stable or increased (+0.1 g/kg per cow). Conversely, changes were less distinct for HealthyLact and L4+. From 2009 to 2017, herd size increased in most farms (med = +1.2 LU/year). The PLS regression highlighted that herds in which MilkCow decreased the most over time were those in which HealthyLact and L4+ decreased and increased the most, respectively. Moreover, for herds in which FertileCow increased the most, FatProtCont either decreased, or increased less. Based on association scores from the PLS, changes in the genetic composition of the herd influenced changes in herd performance variables more than did changes in overall farm management (|0.28|–|0.59| vs |0.26|–|0.50|). Our findings suggest that dairy crossbreeding is relevant to rebalance herd performance between production and functional traits.

Due to global climate change, drought is emerging as a major threat to plant growth and agricultural productivity. Abscisic acid (ABA) has been implicated in plant drought tolerance, however, its retarding effects on plant growth cannot be ignored. The reactions catalyzed by 1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate synthase (DXS) and 1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate reductoisomerase (DXR) proteins are critical steps within the isoprenoid biosynthesis in plants. Here, five DXS (CtDXS1-5) and two DXR (CtDXR1-2) genes were identified from Cassia tora genome. Based on multiple assays including the phylogeny, cis-acting element, expression pattern, and subcellular localization, CtDXS1 and CtDXR1 genes might be potential candidates controlling the isoprenoid biosynthesis. Intriguingly, CtDXS1 transgenic plants resulted in drought tolerance but retardant growth, while CtDXR1 transgenic plants exhibited both enhanced drought tolerance and increased growth. By comparison of β-carotene, chlorophyll, abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin 3 (GA3) contents in wild-type and transgenic plants, the absolute contents and (or) altered GA3/ABA levels were suggested to be responsible for the balance between drought tolerance and plant growth. The transcriptome of CtDXR1 transgenic plants suggested that the transcript levels of key genes, such as DXS, 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenases (NCED), ent-kaurene synthase (KS) and etc, involved with chlorophyll, β-carotene, ABA and GA3 biosynthesis were induced and their contents increased accordingly. Collectively, the trade-off effect induced by CtDXR1 was associated with redesigning architecture in phytohormone homeostasis and thus was highlighted for future breeding purposes.

ABSTRACT Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) are one of the most detrimental species of antibiotic-resistant bacteria globally. Phage therapy has emerged as an effective strategy for the treatment of CPE infections. In western Japan, the rise of Klebsiella pneumoniae strains harboring the pKPI-6 plasmid encoding bla IMP-6 is of increasing concern. To address this challenge, we isolated 29 phages from Japanese sewage, specifically targeting 31 K. pneumoniae strains and one Escherichia coli strain harboring the pKPI-6 plasmid. Electron microscopy analysis revealed that among the 29 isolated phages, 21 (72.4%), 5 (17.2%), and 3 (10.3%) phages belonged to myovirus, siphovirus, and podovirus morphotypes, respectively. Host range analysis showed that 18 Slopekvirus strains within the isolated phages infected 25–26 K. pneumoniae strains, indicating that most of the isolated phages have a broad host range. Notably, K. pneumoniae strain Kp21 was exclusively susceptible to phage øKp_21, whereas Kp22 exhibited susceptibility to over 20 phages. Upon administering a phage cocktail composed of 10 phages, we observed delayed emergence of phage-resistant bacteria in Kp21 but not in Kp22. Intriguingly, phage-resistant Kp21 exhibited heightened sensitivity to other bacteriophages, indicating a “trade-off” for resistance to phage øKp_21. Our proposed phage set has an adequate number of phages to combat the K. pneumoniae strain prevalent in Japan, underscoring the potential of a well-designed phage cocktail in mitigating the occurrence of phage-resistant bacteria. IMPORTANCE The emergence of Klebsiella pneumoniae harboring the bla IMP-6 plasmid poses an escalating threat in Japan. In this study, we found 29 newly isolated bacteriophages that infect K. pneumoniae strains carrying the pKPI-6 plasmid from clinical settings in western Japan. Our phages exhibited a broad host range. We applied a phage cocktail treatment composed of 10 phages against two host strains, Kp21 and Kp22, which displayed varying phage susceptibility patterns. Although the phage cocktail delayed the emergence of phage-resistant Kp21, it was unable to hinder the emergence of phage-resistant Kp22. Moreover, the phage-resistant Kp21 became sensitive to other phages that were originally non-infective to the wild-type Kp21 strains. Our study highlights the potential of a well-tailored phage cocktail in reducing the occurrence of phage-resistant bacteria.

Ecosystem services (ESs) provide a bridge between social systems and ecosystems. Effective management of the trade-offs between ecosystem services is an important scientific problem in the study of social-ecological system management. According to the origin of ESs trade-offs, this study summarizes the management approaches of ES trade-off, and points out the shortcomings of the existing management approaches in terms of “efficiency” and “fairness”. Finally, according to the shortcomings, an ES trade-off management framework is proposed to improve the “efficiency” and “fairness” of ES trade-off management. The research shows that the ES trade-off management framework based on key ecosystem services (KESs) can improve the supply of the KESs, and promote the inevitable loss on the non-key ESs (NKESs) so as to improve the “efficiency” of ES trade-off management. At the same time, the framework constructs compensation scheme of private winners to private losers is constructed to improve the “fairness” of ES trade-off management. The results provide potential solutions for ecosystem service trade-off management.

Ecosystem services (ESs) are closely related to human well-being (HWB). Recently, urbanization has increased worldwide, which has had a significant impact on the ecosystem service supply–demand (ESSD) and HWB. However, previous studies have primarily focused on the spatiotemporal pattern of ESSD and HWB, while ignoring their evolutionary pathways, especially in karst areas. We aimed to quantify the optimal trade-offs of ESSD under the constraints of urbanization and the nonlinear relationship between ESSD and HWB, further constructing a tree-like framework to explore the evolutionary pathways of urbanization, ESSD, and HWB from a landscape evolution perspective. We used the production possibility frontier (PPF) to quantify the optimal trade-offs of three ESSDs, the generalized additive model (GAM) to fit the nonlinear relationship between ESSD and HWB, and the geographic evolution tree model (Geotree) to construct the tree-like structure of urbanization levels, comprehensive ecosystem service supply–demand (CESD), and HWB. There is a trade-off between the deficit of carbon storage services (CS) and water yield services (WY), but a synergy between the deficit of WY and the surplus of FS. Further, there is a synergy between the deficit of CSs and the surplus of food supply services (FS). The response of HWB to the ESSD of CS is not obvious, but the response to the ESSD of WY and FS is obvious. Based on the Geotree model, the urbanization, CESD, and HWB present strong coupling relationships, which show the characteristics of clustering, stratified heterogeneity, and evolution.

The objective of this article is to analyze the capital structure adjustment of Latin American firms through the pecking order and trade-off theories using a sample of 975 non-financial firms for the period 2000-2017. The results support the existence of a target capital structure. Adjustment speeds ranged between 48.9% and 74.3% and generate a rapid convergence of leverage towards its target level. Financial deficits explained less than half of the changes in debt, which contradicts the pecking order theory. The results of the error correction model indicated that companies dynamically deviate from their long-term capital structure. The convergence speeds in the partial adjustment model increased up to 69.5% and 91.7% with the error correction method. These results are relevant for firms and investors

Introduction: Assembly and co-occurrence of the host co-evolved microbiota are essential ecological and evolutionary processes, which is not only crucial for managing individual plant fitness but also ecological function. However, understanding of the microbiome assembly and co-occurrence in higher plants is not well understood. The tea plant was shown to contribute the forest fitness due to the microbiome assembled in the phyllosphere; the landscape of microbiome assembly in the tea plants and its potential implication on phyllosphere homestasis still remains untangled. Objectives: This study aimed to deciphering of the microbiome networks of the tea plants at a continental scale. It would provide fundamental insights into the factors driving the microbiome assembly, with an extended focus on the resilience towards the potential pathogen in the phyllosphere. Methods: We collected 225 samples from 45 locations spanning approximately 2000-km tea growing regions across China. By integration of high-throughput sequencing data, physicochemical properties profiling and bioinformatics analyses, we investigated continental scale microbiome assembly and co-occurrence in the tea plants. Synthetic assemblages, interaction assay and RT-qPCR were further implemented to analyze the microbial interaction indexed in phyllosphere. Results: A trade-off between stochastic and deterministic processes in microbiomes community assembly was highlighted. Assembly processes were dominated by deterministic processes in bulk and rhizosphere soils, and followed by stochastic processes in roots and leaves with amino acids as critical drivers for environmental selection. Sphingobacteria and Proteobacteria ascended from soils to leaves to sustain a core leaf taxa. The core taxa formed a close association with a prevalent foliar pathogen in the co-occurrence network and significantly attenuated the expression of a set of essential virulence genes in pathogen. Conclusion: Our study unveils the mechanism underpinning microbiome assembly in the tea plants, and a potential implication of the microbiome-mediated resilience framework on the phyllosphere homeostasis.

The study of functional traits and their relationship to trade-offs has provided valuable insights into how plants adapt to environmental changes. Nonetheless, further research is necessary to fully comprehend the subtropical montane trade-off patterns in moss functional traits and the impact of environmental gradients on the correlation of these traits. To address this gap, we conducted a study of 11 moss species (7 families, 9 genera) in 54 patches from two subtropical mountain ranges, examining 40 functional traits related to photosynthesis, nutrients, water retention, and architecture. Through principal component analysis (PCA) and bi-variate correlation analysis, our findings reveal a strong correlation between light capture and nutrient assimilation strategies, as evidenced by the coordination between the traits of light capture and nutrient per area along a main principal component. Interestingly, we observed a trend towards smaller leaves and leaf cells in species with higher capacity for photosynthesis and metabolism, consistent with global trait spectra in vascular plants. However, we found that the trade-off between light capture and nutrient assimilation strategies was independent of water-holding capacity at shoot levels. Instead, we found that water-holding capacity was closely associated with nutrient utilization, energy metabolism, chlorophyll synthesis, and the primary process of photosynthesis. Our results highlight the multiple dimensions of functional traits in subtropical montane mosses and demonstrate that variation in these traits is driven by water availability, slope, and canopy density. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the co-variation of moss traits and how environmental changes may impact mosses and ecosystem function.

The suggestion that decapod crustaceans might experience pain has been dismissed by some authors who claim decapods only respond to noxious stimuli by nociceptive reflexes. Because reflexes do not require complex neuronal processing, but pain does, demonstrating reflex responses to noxious stimuli would not support the case for pain. Here, we report an experiment in which shore crabs are repeatedly placed in a light area (20 trials), but the animals can avoid the light by moving to a dark shelter. However, some crabs received an electric shock of 6 or 12 volts each time they entered the shelter. Those receiving either level of shock swiftly reduced their use of shelters and remained in the light. However, the magnitude of shelter avoidance was influenced by the brightness of the arena and the intensity of the shock. Shelter use was subsequently reduced to a greater extent if the shock level was high and the light intensity low. That is, crabs traded their avoidance of shock for their avoidance of bright light. Further, these animals showed avoidance learning and demonstrated activities suggesting anxiety, such as contact with the tank wall in the light area and increased latency to enter shelters when making the decision to enter the shelter if they had received shock in earlier trials. These results fulfil three key behavioural criteria for pain and, thus, are consistent with the idea that decapods can experience pain.

Existing research suggests that a health-centred response to the climate crisis would support immediate and more ambitious action that minimises adverse health outcomes of climate change whilst providing additional co-benefits for population health. This review aimed to identify and assess literature that examines the health and wellbeing co-benefits of climate action in urban areas and to identify potential co-benefits that could be incorporated into policy or programme evaluation. We searched Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science, and screened titles, abstracts, and full-text. Peer-reviewed studies in English were included if they focused on health and wellbeing co-benefits of climate change adaptation and/or mitigation policies and programmes specific to urban areas. Our analysis found that all 39 studies in this review identified positive health and wellbeing co-benefits, with the majority focusing on transport policies and cross-sectoral mitigation and adaptation. All included studies employed a diverse array of modelling methodology, with multiple models and interdisciplinary approaches to evaluate co-benefits. Co-benefits ranged from reduced or avoided mortality and morbidity to social and economic health benefits. The degree of co-benefits differed according to the policies themselves; the policy sector; and vulnerability, demographic and/or geographic factors. Nine studies identified negative trade-offs of climate action. The review’s findings add to existing literature in support of the value and importance of assessing the health and wellbeing co-benefits of climate action. The review also highlights the need for further identification and quantification of a comprehensive set of health and wellbeing co-benefits, improved data reporting and granularity, as well as research evaluating the impact of climate action that considers how vulnerability, demographic, geographic or other factors interact with policy implementation. This research is critical in informing the cost-effective prioritisation and coordination of climate policies that maximise human health benefits and promote health equity by minimising trade-offs for vulnerable groups.
