Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) can occur following quenches in quantum systems when the rate function, a dynamical analogue of the free energy, becomes non-analytic at critical times. Here we exhaustively investigate in an exemplary model how the dynamically evolving state responds to a second quench. We demonstrate that for quenches where the initial and final Hamiltonian belong to different phases always result in DQPTs, irrespective of the intermediate quench and dynamics or the time of the second quench. However, if the initial and final Hamiltonian belong to the same equilibrium phase then the intermediate Hamiltonian must belong to a different phase. In this case, the second quench time in relation to the critical times of the first quench becomes crucial to the existence of DQPTs.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials like transition metal dichalcogenides and Xenes are expected to bring exciting advancements in many fields of nanotechnology. The wealth of their electronic properties makes them appealing for a broad range of applications. In particular, in the framework of optics and photonics, three emerging routes where the key role of 2D materials will push forward the current state-of-the-art will be here outlined and discussed. Exerting control over the light-driven generation of spin-polarized dissipationless currents, enhancing the photon harvesting, and engineering the light-matter interaction are three challenges for 2D materials-based optics and photonics.

Background: Majorana states in condensed matter devices may be of a localized nature, such as in hybrid semiconductor/superconductor nanowires, or chirally propagating along the edges such as in hybrid 2D quantum-anomalous Hall/superconductor structures.Results: We calculate the circular dichroism due to chiral Majorana states in a hybrid structure made of a quantum-anomalous Hall insulator and a superconductor. The optical absorption of chiral Majorana states is characterized by equally spaced absorption peaks of both positive and negative dichroism. In the limit of a very long structure (a 2D ribbon) peaks of a single sign are favored.Conclusion: Circular-dichroism spectroscopy of chiral Majorana states is suggested as a relevant probe for these peculiar states of topological matter.

Mass-spring networks (MSNs) have long been used as approximate descriptions of biological and engineered systems, from actomyosin networks to mechanical trusses. In the last decade, MSNs have re-attracted theoretical interest as models for phononic metamaterials with exotic properties such as negative Poisson's ratio, negative effective mass, or gapped vibrational spectra. A numerical advantage of MSNs is their tuneability, which allows the inverse design of materials with pre-specified bandgaps. Building on this fact, we demonstrate here that designed MSNs, when subjected to Coriolis forces, can host topologically protected chiral edge modes at predetermined frequencies, thus enabling robust unidirectional transmission of mechanical waves. Similar to other recently discovered topological materials, the topological phases of MSNs can be classified by a Chern invariant related to time-reversal symmetry breaking.

Wepropose a scheme realizing topological insulators and quantized pumps for magnon excitations, based on strongly-interacting two-component ultracold atoms trapped in optical superlattices. Specifically, we show how to engineer the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model for magnons using state-independent superlattices, and the Rice-Mele model using state-dependent superlattices. We describe realistic experimental protocols to detect the topological signatures of magnon excitations in these two models. In particular, we show that the non-equilibrium dynamics of a single magnon can be exploited to directly detect topological winding numbers and phase transitions. We also describe how topological (quantized) pumps can be realized with magnons, and study how this phenomenon depends on the initial magnon state preparation. Our study opens a new avenue for exploring magnonic topological phases of matter and their potential applications in the context of topological magnon transport.

Guiding energy deliberately is one of the central elements in engineering and information processing. It is often achieved by designing specific transport channels in a suitable material. Topological metamaterials offer a way to construct stable and efficient channels of unprecedented versatility. However, due to their stability it can be tricky to terminate them or to temporarily shut them off without changing the material properties massively. While a lot of effort was put into realizing mechanical topological metamaterials, almost no works deal with manipulating their edge channels in sight of applications. Here, we take a step in this direction, by taking advantage of local symmetry breaking potentials to build a switchable topological phonon channel.
