Introduction: In the current technological era, the implementation and use of information and communication technology are crucial for productivity and organizational management in the health sector. This study aimed to investigate factors influencing staff acceptance of the Hospital Management System (HMS) using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) in a private hospital in Selangor, Malaysia. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and administrative staff, to explore their experiences and perceptions of the HMS. Data collection was performed through interviews and observations and analyzed using thematic analysis with ATLAS.ti. Results: The study identified five key themes influencing HMS acceptance: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and behavioral intention. Participants emphasized the importance of system reliability, speed, and user-friendly interfaces for efficient workflow. Peer support and a technology-promoting organizational culture positively influenced system use. Comprehensive training and continuous technical support were crucial for user confidence. Despite recognizing the system's benefits, participants highlighted challenges such as inadequate system integration and the need for simultaneous digital and traditional record-keeping. Conclusion: Addressing these issues and tailoring the HMS to meet specific departmental needs can enhance user satisfaction and system effectiveness. The study underscores the importance of understanding user needs and providing robust support systems to facilitate the successful implementation and adoption of HMS in healthcare settings.

Abstract Landslides are a major concern for hilly regions worldwide, claiming lives and livelihoods. Early detection and warning systems are crucial in mitigating the impact. This paper aims to identify and analyse the existing landslides early warning systems (LEWS) by analysing the community awareness and assessing the perception of the respondents toward the effectiveness of existing warning systems in Bududa District, Uganda. LEWS are integrated systems designed to monitor, assess, and provide timely alerts about potential landslides. Through mixed methods with sample size of 199 participants, the study revealed that majority of the respondents’ (48.2%) lacked awareness about existing landslide early warning systems, while 28.2% were none committal, with only 23.7%, indicating awareness of some of these systems. Further identified that weather stations were the most popular (44.9%), and community radios (41%). Additionally, majority of the respondents (51.3%) ranked the systems effectiveness in terms of providing early detection and timely warning at 25%, and only 9.6% of the respondents ranked their effectiveness at 75%. The study recommends that Bududa district officials should increase community awareness of the installed landslide early detection and warning systems through sensitization programs, the Government should develop customized landslide detection and early warning system.

Abstract This paper aims to contribute knowledge about the influences of leaders’ perceptions of digitalisation on arrangements for leading the expansion of access to and application of digital technologies in K–12 education. Supporting the digitalisation of K–12 education requires digital competence. School organisers’ and school leaders’ digital competence and perceptions of digitalisation contribute to how digital technologies are employed in schools. Survey and participant observations were used to investigate leaders’ perceptions of digitalisation in K–12 education. The data were analysed using thematic analysis and theory of practice architecture. The results show that perceptions of digitalisation in K–12 education influence arrangements by allowing opportunities for enhanced quality in teaching and equality within and among schools. Further, collaborations between leaders, sharing ideas and experiences, and enhancing leadership are elements that contribute to the shaping of leaders’ perceptions of digitalisation in schools. This paper contributes to the knowledge of leaders’ perceptions of expanding the access to and application of digital technologies in schools.

This study aims to explore the role of multiple leadership styles in bank performance, with disruption as a moderator in Indonesia. The study uses a probability sampling technique with random sampling types. The main data source was the distribution of questionnaires. 300 bank employees were targeted, and 450 data inputs were received upon completion of the survey. The data were processed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with Partial Least Square Structural Software. The data analysis obtained a construct and discriminant validity value of 0.7 and achieved an R-Square of 0.743. The results of this study showed that multiple leadership styles, consisting of transformational leadership style, ethical leadership style, and servant leadership style, influence bank performance (P-Value 0.000). Disruption also influences bank performance (P-Values 0.000); however, disruption does not moderate the influence of leadership styles on bank performance (P-Value 0.993). This study emphasizes the importance of multiple leadership styles that combine transformational leadership style, ethical leadership style, and servant leadership style in managing banking business performance. This study significantly contributes to leadership development initiatives in the dynamic Indonesian banking industry and offers future research directions. Abstract Background Weight stigma refers to the social rejection, discrimination, and ideological devaluation of individuals because of body size and is a direct result of weight bias and anti-fat attitudes. Individuals with higher weight may be less likely to seek healthcare due to weight stigma, and if or when they do present for care, medical providers with weight bias may fail to provide high quality care. Little, however, is known about the intersectionality of weight stigma and perceptions of healthcare interactions as experienced by individuals who also binge eat. Methods Community-based adults completed online self-report questionnaires regarding generalized weight stigma (Attitudes Towards Obese Persons1), healthcare interaction quality (Patient Perceptions of Healthcare Provider Interaction Quality; PPH), and disordered eating (Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire) via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform. For this cross-sectional study, participants were categorized by the presence and absence of regular binge episodes. Pearson’s correlations, T-tests, ANOVA/ANCOVA, and a multivariate regression were used to examine relationships among demographic variables, weight stigma, disordered eating, and the PPH. Results Participants (N = 648) primarily identified as female (65.4%) and White, non-Hispanic (72.7%). Participants’ average age and body mass index (BMI) were 37.5 (SD = 12.3) years old and 27.3 (SD = 6.9) kg/m2, respectively. Higher healthcare provider interaction quality ratings (PPH) were significantly related to lower BMI (r(648)=-0.098,p = 0.012), less weight stigma (r(648) = 0.149,p

Green infrastructure has emerged as an opportunity to balance sociocultural and ecological benefits, alongside the potential for biodiversity conservation in cities. However, key design challenges that remain unsolved including 1) how to effectively balance biodiversity conservation and sociocultural benefits, and 2) how user's perception and knowledge may affect the acceptance of conservation interventions in parks. In this study, we used a mixed methods approach in which focus groups were used to explore users' perceptions of landscape attributes, their benefits, biodiversity, climate change, and conservation interventions in parks. This was followed by face-to-face interviews with the broader general public to quantitatively assess perceptions and acceptability for conservation interventions in parks. While plant density and functional diversity were identified as key landscape attributes, trade-offs may occur with other attributes such as multi-functionality and the order of the vegetation. Most conservation interventions had high acceptance levels, where the decrease of grass in parks was the most controversial attribute. All interventions were correlated with the importance of landscape attributes and climate change concerns, but poorly associated with knowledge of native biodiversity. The results support 1) increasing the functional diversity of plants in parks as a way to balance environmental and sociocultural benefits and promote the acceptability of conservation interventions, however such an increase should be linked to designs that respect notions of order and other park uses, and 2) environmental education based on climate change may be the key to improving acceptability of these initiatives.

Introduction: Students-centered teaching and learning methods are the trends in medical education. Many innovative techniques are introduced and implemented to promote active learning by students, like crossword puzzles, a fun educational tool to generate interest, motivate, and enhance the critical thinking of medical students. Hence, this study was conducted to assess the perception of medical students toward crossword puzzles. Materials and Methods: This is an interventional study done on II MBBS students in the department of pathology. The crossword puzzles are created, and students are allowed to solve them for 15 min after a didactic lecture. Then, students are provided with a questionnaire to assess their perceptions toward this technique. The knowledge gained and retained was evaluated by short answer questions in comparison with topics dealt with only by traditional lectures. Descriptive and analytical statistical analysis of mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test for analysis of scores of both methods are done. Results: The majority of the students in this study perceived that crossword puzzles helped in better understanding of concepts, were fun education tools, challenging and problem-solving, emphasized the core topic, helped reinforcement of lectures, encouraged active learning, and improved overall thinking. The P value between the scores by only lecture method and that reinforced by crossword puzzles was extremely statistically significant. Thus crossword puzzles can be used to enhance retention and help in reinforcement learning. Conclusions: Crossword puzzles are an innovative learning method which promotes active learning and overall thinking of the students. This can be implemented in medical schools as a simple, creative, and effective means of holistic learning.

Objectives. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of sport-specific educational proposals in school-age sports, currently used in planning of sports activities, such as game-based karate training, on social interactions and improving perceptions of one’s motor skills. Materials and methods. The sample consisted of 34 children from the Comprehensive Institute “Matilde Serao” in Ortona, Chieti, attending the third classes of the Primary School, in the school year 2023/2024. The method used was based on the Karate Sport Game protocols in conjunction with the dissemination of the ethical principles inherent to the martial arts. A questionnaire was developed for the purpose of assessing the learners’ levels of satisfaction, as well as the perceptions they had about themselves and in relation to others during this training intervention. Results. In the post-implementation evaluation of the educational proposals’ results, it was shown that 94.1% of participants had a positive experience engaging in the Game-Karate activities, 82.3% reported feeling significantly supported by the Instructors during the project, and 94.1% were very satisfied with the activities. The application of the Chi-Square test revealed two significant relationships with respect to the concept of opportunity for interaction with all peers. The first pertained to the participants’ overall satisfaction with the karate instructional project (p=0.006), while the second concerned the concept of improving teamwork (p=0.006). Conclusion. The findings indicate that Karate Game had a beneficial impact on the participants’ emotional sphere, involvement, perceived improvement in motor skills, and group dynamics. In addition, the significant relationships found underscore the importance of social interaction and collaboration in the context of physical activity. These results suggest that playful and participatory approach to the training process in Karate classes can be a valuable resource for the comprehensive development of children’s personality and motor skills during the developmental age.

Abstract Background Globally, the majority of kindergarten-aged children face obesity issues and insufficient physical activity (PA) engagement. Regular PA participation can provide various health benefits, including obesity reduction, for kindergarten-aged children. However, limited studies have investigated the factors influencing kindergarten-aged children’s PA engagement from the perspective of their teachers. This qualitative study aimed to identify factors that could help promote PA among kindergarten-aged children from teachers’ perspectives, including facilitators, barriers, and teachers’ recommendations. Methods Fifteen kindergarten teachers (age range: 28–50 years; mean age: 38.53 years) with teaching experience ranging from 2 to 31 years (mean: 16.27 years) were recruited from Shanghai municipality, Henan, and Jiangsu provinces in China. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted via face-to-face (n = 7) or telephone (n = 8) to gather insights into factors influencing PA promotion among kindergarten-aged children. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using a constant comparison approach based on grounded theory, which involved open, axial, and selective coding processes. Results The study revealed mutual theoretical support between themes and the social-ecological model (SEM), as factors identified in the study are distributed at various levels of the SEM. Twelve factors were identified at four levels of the SEM: (1) intrapersonal level (children’s personality and skills), (2) interpersonal level (family, peers, and teachers influence), (3) organizational level (school environment and resources, opportunities for kindergarten teachers’ training and children’s PA, design and organization of PA, and PA that children need), (4) community level (family-school partnerships). Conclusion Various factors at different levels can influence kindergarten-aged children’s PA. The study’s findings revealed that these factors are distributed across the first four levels of SEM, with the majority being at the organizational level. These multilevel findings are expected to assist in developing and implementing more effective PA interventions for kindergarten-aged children. Future research is warranted to identify strategies for promoting PA among kindergarten-aged children at the policy level of the SEM.

Abstract Background The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare necessitates understanding the perspectives of future practitioners. This study investigated the perceptions of German-speaking medical and dental students regarding the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in their future practices. Methods A 28-item survey adapted from the AI in Healthcare Education Questionnaire (AIHEQ) and the Medical Student’s Attitude Toward AI in Medicine (MSATAIM) scale was administered to students in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland from April to July 2023. Participants were recruited through targeted advertisements on Facebook and Instagram and were required to be proficient in German and enrolled in medical or dental programs. The data analysis included descriptive statistics, correlations, t tests, and thematic analysis of the open-ended responses. Results Of the 409 valid responses (mean age = 23.13 years), only 18.2% of the participants reported receiving formal training in AI. Significant positive correlations were found between self-reported tech-savviness and AI familiarity (r = 0.67) and between confidence in finding reliable AI information and positive attitudes toward AI (r = 0.72). While no significant difference in AI familiarity was found between medical and dental students, dental students exhibited slightly more positive attitudes toward the integration of AI into their future practices. Conclusion This study underscores the need for comprehensive AI education in medical and dental curricula to address knowledge gaps and prepare future healthcare professionals for the ethical and effective integration of AI in practice.

Occupational therapists are required to obtain CE units to ensure professional competency. This study examined occupational therapy practitioners to understand: What are OTPs’ perceived challenges and CE needs when working with populations with neurological impairments? And how can CE courses be tailored towards addressing these challenges and gaps in knowledge effectively? There were 14 responses and 6 themes identified. Participants indicated if they had access to supportive resources as well as their preferred mode of delivery for CE. The findings of this study can be used to identify the preferences, specific clinical skillsets currently used, and gaps in supportive resources.

Abstract Background As part of the fight against coronavirus disease, Nigeria received nearly 4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine via the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) Facility, marking a historic step towards equitable global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. Although evidence exists on COVID-19 hesitancy in Nigeria, yet, we are unaware of any study on the optimization of COVID-19 vaccination from the lenses of the mobile teams. Objective This study seeks to explore the perceptions and experiences of mobile teams in selected communities during the implementation of COVID-19 vaccination in Benue and Niger. Methods An exploratory approach was adopted, and the study was conducted in Niger and Benue states based on poor performance in COVID-19 vaccination. Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) were conducted among 12 mobile vaccination teams from 12 LGAs. The recorded discussions were transcribed and coded (inductively and deductively) using Dedoose software (v9.0). Four themes and seven sub-themes were generated from the participants’ responses. Results Seventy-two (72) health workers including vaccinators, validators, Electronic Management of Immunization Data (EMID) recorders, social mobilizers, and paper recorders participated in this study. Health workers’ perceptions and experiences were thematized using the health building blocks. The mobilization teams in Benue and Niger states perceived that their mobilization efforts contributed to improved coverage, increased accessibility, and reduced hesitancy among the community dwellers. Challenges reported by the teams were vaccine misconceptions, requests for incentives in exchange for vaccine uptake, poor network services, distance to communities, and vaccine stockout. Conclusion This study concluded that social mobilizers play key roles in vaccine uptake, especially at the community level. Their roles in creating awareness, sensitization, and bringing the vaccine closer to hard-to-reach communities contributed to the success attained in the fight against COVID-19 in both states.

Abstract Background Pharmacogenomics (PGx) constitutes an important part of personalized medicine and has several clinical applications. PGx role in clinical practice is known, however, it has not been widely adopted yet. In this study, we aim to investigate the perspectives of Greek physicians regarding the implementation of PGx testing in clinical practice and the key issues associated with it. Methods Fourteen interviews were conducted with physicians of various specialties for which PGx applications are available. A semi-structured interview guide was utilized based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) context and the Diffusion of Innovation model. Transcripts were coded independently and compared by two members of the research team. Descriptive statistics were generated using Microsoft Excel. Results Six main themes emerged: awareness and use of PGx testing; source of information; key stakeholders of the PGx supply chain, their interactions and change agents; clinical benefit and significance of PGx testing; barriers and lack of reimbursement; and recommendations to boost the PGx adoption rate. Most respondents were aware of PGx applications, but only three had already recommended PGx testing. Peer-reviewed journals along with clinical guidelines were regarded as the most used source of information while stakeholders of the PGx supply chain were discussed. PGx was considered that promote patient-centered care, enhance medication clinical effectiveness, decrease the risk of side effects, and reduce healthcare costs. Lack of reimbursement, scarcity of resources, and high PGx cost were the foremost barriers affecting PGx adoption. Conclusions It was concluded that if case PGx testing is reimbursed and physicians’ training is reinforced, PGx implementation will be boosted and improved shortly.

This paper explored whether social transformation in two Eastern Cape Universities, South Africa is a myth or reality. The paper draws upon key insights from social transformation about democratic freedom, political, and cultural spheres of society. Taking social transformation in Higher Education institutions (HEIs) as a conceptual frame of reference, some issues affect the university’s ability to address their challenges in a transformative manner. The theory of transformation underpinned the paper, to understand that transformation is a method of change from one jurisdiction to the next which can be applied to either a person or a group and its services. The interpretivism paradigm was applied to comprehend what people mean when they act and engage with others, as well as the intentions behind their acts. A qualitative research methodology using a case study design was employed to gain information from various views from the purposely selected participants (academics, support staff, and students). Data was collected through focus group interviews and semi-structured interviews. In the data analysed similar categories and themes emerged. The findings of the study exposed a lack of social transformation practices and resistance to change in addressing the institutional processes and practices in a transformative manner. The researchers recommend that Higher Education Institutions ensure they are engaged in practising social transformation strategies to improve their approach to addressing their institutional needs. Based on the findings, a model is proposed as the new knowledge for the existing literature on the social transformation in the Eastern Cape Universities, South Africa whether it is a myth or reality.

The objective of the article is to identify the perceptions, meanings, and resignifications that the inhabitants of Sígsig canton, Azuay province (Ecuador), assign to archaeological heritage. It also attempts to explain how these ways of understanding and using such heritage come into conflict and friction when managed exclusively within a legal and institutional framework. To analyze the ambiguities arising from the dichotomy between public management and the local populations’ uses and meanings of heritage, this study employs the theoretical frameworks of public archaeology and the methodological approach of participatory cartographies. By analyzing national and local heritage regulations and conducting interviews and mappings with actors from the educational, political, and general society sectors, it is suggested that institutional management views heritage as an identity, historical, and economic resource through tourism. Additionally, this management is characterized by a fiscalizing, regulatory, and sanctioning logic, while the inhabitants understand, incorporate, and use archaeological objects and vestiges in their daily lives. This usage fosters a direct connection with oral traditions, intangible aspects, and, above all, with nature. Thus, frictions were identified between the social and political uses of heritage, which regularly involve themes such as gold, mining, and water, within a framework of collective imaginaries and discourses

Objective/context: In 2020, Ucayali was the Peruvian region with the highest loss of Amazonian forest (47,267 hectares). Measures have been taken regarding climate commitments and environmental governance, but the results continue without notoriety, and mitigation actions are limited. From a subnational approach, the article seeks to analyze the perceptions of brokers and actors involved about the implementation of forest policies in the Ucayali region. Methodology: Based on a qualitative strategy that included semi-structured interviews and a co-construction workshop to evidence the perceptions of the actors involved, with direct knowledge of the territory and implementation, and intermediary agents (brokers), the latter with the capacity to influence the decisions made regarding the formulation of action plans. Conclusions: The results demonstrate the existence of a structural difficulty in achieving short- or long-term change actions. There are institutional limitations but also a lack of support from civil society. Originality: Considering the type and limited number of studies on perceptions of climate change-oriented policies, the results obtained allow for generating relevant evidence for policy formulation processes and articulation between different levels of government

This systematic review focused on higher education teachers’ and students’ perceptions and practices of written feedback, as well as their relationships and differences in English as a foreign/second language and academic writing. This study aimed to identify empirical studies, describe their characteristics, summarize the findings, and make recommendations for future research. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol was used. Electronic searches produced 2,398 references, of which 30 articles met the inclusion criteria. Studies primarily focused on students’ perceptions, with few concentrating on students’ and teachers’ reported practices and the relationships between their perceptions and practices. This review suggests that future research should focus on multiple comparisons between teachers’ and students’ perceptions and practices of written feedback.

A pre-validated survey questionnaire with 17 items related to students perceptions of AI and its applications was used. The sample included radiologic technology students from three universities in Saudi Arabia. The survey was conducted online for several weeks, resulting in a sample of 280 radiologic technology students.Results: Of the participants, 63.9% were aware of AI and its applications. T-tests revealed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0471) between genders with male participants reflecting slightly higher AI awareness than female participants. Regarding the choice of radiology as specialization, 35% of the participants stated that they would not choose radiology, whereas 65% preferred it. Approximately 56% of the participants expressed concerns about the potential replacement of radiology technologists with AI, and 62.1% strongly agreed on the necessity of incorporating known ethical principles into AI.Conclusion: The findings reflect a positive evaluation of the applications of this technology, which is attributed to its essential support role. This study aimed to explore physicians’ perceptions, feelings, and beliefs regarding leadership and to provide recommendations regarding appropriate training and institutional post-training support.Methods: We conducted a qualitative study at the Geneva University Hospitals. A purposeful sample of residents (R), fellows (F), attending physicians (A), and chairpersons (CP) were invited to participate in focus groups (or semi-structured interviews) between April and June 2021. We investigated their understanding of leadership, self-perception as leaders, difficulties, and paths to improvement in their leadership skills. Focus groups were transcribed verbatim and analyzed both inductively and deductively using Fishbein’s model of behavior prediction and Irby’s professional identity formation framework.Results: We conducted ten focus groups (R=3; F=4, A=2, and CP=1) and one interview (CP). Physicians expressed poor self-efficacy at all hierarchical levels: feelings of insecurity and confusion (R and F), frustration (A), and feeling stuck between divisional and institutional governance (CP). Such negative feelings were nurtured by personal beliefs with an intuitive and idealized representation of leadership. Beliefs focused more on personal characteristics rather than on skills, processes, or perceived institutional norms. Unclear expectations regarding physicians’ role as leaders, overemphasis on academic achievement, and silo professional organizations fueled their feelings. Participants reported developing their leadership through trial and error, observing role models, and turning to personal resources rather than formal training.Conclusion: Our results show that physicians’ leadership skills are still mainly acquired intuitively and that institutional norms do not encourage clarification of leadership roles and processes. Physician training in leadership skills, together with more explicit and clear institutional processes, may help to improve physicians’ self-efficacy and develop their identity as leaders.Keywords: leadership, physicians, identity formation, beliefs, perceptions, qualitative

This study aims to examine the administrative service delivery practices within the local government of Nepal and explore the intricate perceptions of the interplay between governance, service delivery, and citizens. The objectives include understanding the contextual elements that shape states, addressing concerns of developing nations, emphasizing service delivery, prioritizing citizen viewpoints, and tackling governance issues. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach grounded on post-positivism, the study employs purposeful sampling to select rural municipalities in Nepal. Data collection involves a quantitative institutional survey to assess the current state of public administrative services, with survey respondents comprising service providers and citizens. The respondents reported higher levels of satisfaction with the efficiency, timeliness, and resource availability of administrative services. However, the study also revealed gaps and disparities in the knowledge and perceptions of administrative practices and governance among different respondent groups and ecological regions. Emphasizing the significant advantages of collaboration, decentralization, people-centric development, and meaningful engagement, the study highlights the need for further research and policy interventions to enhance public service delivery and governance of local government in Nepal.

Illegal river sand mining in regions like the Limpopo Province poses severe threats to ecosystems and communities. Nevertheless, the community's perspectives concerning these effects have not been determined. Thus, the aim of the investigation was to assess community perceptions regarding the environmental consequences linked to river sand mining in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. The study employed mixed methods to acquire the primary data. The quantitative data were acquired using questionnaires; meanwhile, the qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews from various respondents. The demographic profile of the respondents indicated a predominantly male population, with a majority lacking formal qualifications. Additionally, the prevalence of very high unemployment rates in the area seemed to influence participation in the activity. Consequently, some perceived it as an economic opportunity to generate income for their sustenance. It has been found that as developments increase, the demand for river sand increases as well, leading to a high extraction rate of sand. Lastly, the extraction of the resources was found to be un-regulated or controlled; therefore, it is concluded that unregulated extraction of these resources resulted in a high extraction rate and environmental crises such as un-rehabilitated pits, water pollution, land pollution, among others. It is therefore recommended that collaborative efforts among relevant authorities to enforce stringent regulations and penalties. Equally vital are public awareness campaigns, which can play a pivotal role in educating communities about the environmental repercussions of illegal sand mining.

The pedagogical roles of teacher educators (TEs) in recruiting and educating future language teachers have recently gained attention among language researchers and scholars. Hence, this study set to investigate the pedagogical roles of Iranian non-native teacher educators (TEs) in educating preservice and in-service EFL teachers from the viewpoint of language institute managers. To this end, following a qualitative survey research design, a total of 30 institute managers were selected via the snowball sampling method and engaged in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The participants’ responses were voice recorded and then thematic analysis was conducted to extract the main themes and subcomponents. The findings of the study showed that institute managers assigned three main instructional roles to TEs: holding preservice/in-service teacher education courses, revising the assessment system, and designing effective language syllabuses. Accordingly, language institute managers believed that effective TEs should not only be responsible for running teacher education courses but also engage in the evaluation process by checking and revising the testing procedures and designing and developing relevant instructional syllabuses in cooperation with educational managers of the institutes. The pedagogical findings of the study are also discussed.

The aim of this study is to analyse the perception of students and university teachers on the level of importance of generic competences when devising the End-of-Degree Project in Teacher Education, as well as on the amount of training the students receive regarding these competences. It also looks for possible differences between both groups and both ratings. An online survey was applied to a sample of 52 university teachers and 199 fourth year and graduate students of Primary/Preschool Teacher Degree courses. Participants were asked to rate 33 generic competences of an instrumental, interpersonal and systemic nature. It was found that the students thought they had received less training regarding many of the competences, as compared to the perception of university teachers. In addition, importance score was significantly higher than those related to training for both students and university teachers. These results highlight the need to explicitly address and assess the development of generic competences across all subjects in ways that meet the students’ needs.

The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of college students towards digital competences and how they evaluate their needs for competence in learning and using English as a foreign language (EFL). The participants are 20 students (10 males and 10 females) learning EFL at the school of foreign languages of a private university in İstanbul, Türkiye. Data were collected via a socio-demographic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. For the analyses of the qualitative data, codes, and themes were determined and organized according to the inductive thematic analysis approach, for which Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-step procedure was followed. The results revealed themes of skills for digitalization, ownership of digital tools, positive attitudes towards digital competences in language education, needs relating to language use and learning: assessment, communication, interaction, resources, information, lessons and teachers, and finally, differences between before and after distance education in terms of digital competences. Compared with the present literature, tertiary level EFL learners have positive views of digital competences that cover widely accepted definitions and perceive their own digital competence levels as sufficient, teachers are perceived as having more digital competence than students. Digital competences are widely used in lessons, extracurricular activities, and assessment-evaluation processes, even though school curricula do not sufficiently prioritise them. They also believe that they need similar digital competences in foreign language education, parallel to literature. Although it has been shown that the school gives students enough opportunity to enhance their digital competences, there are still several suggestions made by the participants to advance their academic and professional goals. Furthermore, it is thought that national higher education policies do not place enough emphasis on this issue. In conclusion, digital competences should be prioritised, according to suggestions made by national policymakers, institution administrators, and university instructors as well as students.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate how a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of an adapted diabetes nutrition education programme (NEP) was received by adults with sub-optimally controlled (HbA1c of ≥ 8%) type 2 diabetes in a tertiary setting. This could aid in understanding the small effect of NEP on HbA1c and other outcomes and the high attrition rate.Methods: This qualitative study was done alongside the year-long RCT. In the RCT, intervention participants received four NEP components, and both intervention and control group participants received education materials (fridge/wall poster). Five focus-group discussions were held with the intervention group participants at two time periods: after they completed the NEP curriculum (7th month) (n = 26; 67% of randomised participants [RP]( and at the end of the study (12 months) [n = 24; 61.5% RP). Nineteen (50% RP) control group participants were individually interviewed at the end of the study. Data were analysed using a thematic framework.Results: All participants (control and intervention) reported high satisfaction with the NEP. Participants emphasised the value of the fridge/wall poster for themselves and their families. Participants (control and intervention) reported various benefits of the NEP: improved diabetes knowledge, skills in dietary self-care, family support for self-care, better health and motivation for appropriate self-care. Some participants also reported positive changes to their diet and physical activity behaviours. The perceived benefits were the main reason for completing the study.Conclusions: Irrespective of the arm of participation, the NEP was well received, and perceived benefits inspired participation. The limited NEP impact and the sub-optimal programme participation do not appear to be related to participants’ perceptions of the adapted NEP.

Recent crises in international relations have created tensions in communication and hindered the achievement of understanding between societies. Under these complicated circumstances, young people are not only objects of public influence but also agenda-setting actors capable of learning and acting on the basis of knowledge about the international situation. This article focuses on how the Japanese students perceive their close neighbor Russia and examines how their views on the image of the neighboring country and its citizens have changed from 2021 to 2022. To examine the changes in perception, within the research project “Student’s representations of neighboring countries: Russia and Japan,” students from four Japanese universities were interviewed (online questionnaire). In the present work the results of the studies are analyzed in order to draw conclusions about the drivers of the change in the public perception of Russia. The author focused on university students for this study because it was assumed that they would eventually become part of the political elite of the country. The tendency for social and political advocacy among the youth was also a contributing factor that supported university students being the group favorably consider for this research. The university student population also provides a higher level of homogeneity among respondents, increasing the internal validity of the findings. Comparing the results of the 2022 survey with the results of the 2021 survey, we can observe some significant changes in the perception of Russia by Japanese youth. First of all, we can observe a shift in perception from the sphere of culture to the sphere of security. The quotes from students throughout this article should be taken into account when looking at the results and analysis. This research also confirms that negative and positive cognitive opinions about a neighboring country can coexist among Japanese youth.

Background and Study Aim. Given the recent mandate by the Budget Law 2022 for compulsory two hours of physical education (PE) in IV and V classes of Italian primary schools, understanding the dynamics of gender stereotypes during movement activities becomes crucial. This review aims to summarize the scientific evidence of the gender gap in PE lessons and identify barriers to female participation in movement activities. Material and Methods. The methodology employed was a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The literature search was conducted in April 2023, utilizing a range of databases including Web of Science and Scopus. The search strategy applied MeSH terms and text words, connected by AND: "gender stereotypes" OR "gender gap", "PE" OR "physical education" OR "school" OR "children". Additionally, relevant articles were manually selected from Google Scholar to supplement the database findings. The inclusion criteria were centered on studies within the school context. Only articles published in English within the time frame of 2012 to 2023 were considered. Exclusion criteria ruled out conference proceedings, literature reviews, articles published before 2012, and non-English language publications. Results. Thirteen items met the inclusion criteria. The main barriers included personal beliefs of pupils towards sporting activities, particularly highlighting concerns from the female gender. Other significant barriers were attitudes of teachers and the perpetuation of gender stereotypes in PE textbooks. Several interventions were conducted, primarily focused on co-educational methodologies. These interventions proved effective in dismantling some gender stereotypes. Conclusions. The results demonstrated the presence of gender stereotypes during PE lessons. There was a need to improve teacher training, which was perceived as inadequate to work on gender inequality from primary school onwards.

Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly expanding in myriad industries and systems. This study sought to investigate public trust in using AI in the criminal court process. While previous research has identified factors that influence trust in AI, such as perceived accuracy and transparency of algorithms, less is known about the role of influential leaders—such as judges—in shaping public trust in new technology. This study examined the relationship between locus of control, anthropomorphism, cultural values, and perceived trust in AI. Participants completed a survey assessing their perceptions of trust in AI in determining bail eligibility, bail fines and fees, sentencing length, sentencing fines and fees, and writing legal documents (e.g., findings and disposition). Participants were more likely to trust AI performing financial calculations rather than determining bail eligibility, sentence length, or drafting legal documents. Participants’ comfort with AI in decision-making also depended on their perceptions of judges’ trust in AI, and they expressed concerns about AI perpetuating bias and the need for extensive testing to ensure accuracy. Interestingly, no significant association was found with other participant characteristics (e.g., locus of control, anthropomorphism, or cultural values). This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the role of judges as influential leaders in shaping public trust in AI and examining the influence of individual differences on trust in AI. The findings also help inform the development of recommended practices and ethical guidelines for the responsible use of AI in the courts.

Abstract Background This study assessed knowledge, behaviors, and perceptions towards hypertension following community dissemination on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk within the Navrongo Health and Demographic Surveillance Site in Northern Ghana. Methods A cross-sectional mixed methods study was conducted among middle aged men and women following education on CVD and their risk factors. Knowledge and attitudes of participants regarding hypertension were measured in 310 participants using a survey tool and the resultant data was analyzed with descriptive statistics. Focus group discussions (FDG) were used to assess perceptions of 40 study participants on their lived experiences with hypertension. Recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded into themes using Nvivo 12 software before thematic analysis. Results Of the 310 surveyed participants, 54% were women and the mean age was 50 ± 6 years. The results showed that 84% of participants had heard about hypertension, 70% knew it was an increase in blood pressure and could be caused by excess salt intake, poor diet and physical inactivity. About 22.3% of participants were aware of the had hypertension. In terms of management, majority of the participants were aware that hypertension could be treated with antihypertensive medication and that untreated or uncontrolled hypertension could result in adverse health consequences. Few participants had ever had their blood pressure measured and did not access screening or healthcare care services and rather perceived the health system as inadequate to screen, and manage hypertension. Conclusion Though, knowledge on hypertension was high, awareness of hypertension status and access to screening and healthcare services was low. Community beliefs and perceptions strongly influence treatment, and control of hypertension. Effective sustained community dissemination efforts addressing misperceptions could improve hypertension treatment and control.

Abstract Background This review aimed to provide healthcare professionals with a scientific summary of best available research evidence on factors influencing respectful perinatal care. The review question was ‘What were the perceptions of midwives and doctors on factors that influence respectful perinatal care?’ Methods A detailed search was done on electronic databases: EBSCOhost: Medline, OAlster, Scopus, SciELO, Science Direct, PubMed, Psych INFO, and SocINDEX. The databases were searched for available literature using a predetermined search strategy. Reference lists of included studies were analysed to identify studies missing from databases. The phenomenon of interest was factors influencing maternity care practices according to midwives and doctors. Pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria were used during selection of potential studies. In total, 13 studies were included in the data analysis and synthesis. Three themes were identified and a total of nine sub-themes. Results Studies conducted in various settings were included in the study. Various factors influencing respectful perinatal care were identified. During data synthesis three themes emerged namely healthcare institution, healthcare professional and women-related factors. Alongside the themes were sub-themes human resources, medical supplies, norms and practices, physical infrastructure, healthcare professional competencies and attributes, women’s knowledge, and preferences. The three factors influence the provision of respectful perinatal care; addressing them might improve the provision of this care. Conclusion Addressing factors that influence respectful perinatal care is vital towards the prevention of compromised patient care during the perinatal period as these factors have the potential to accelerate or hinder provision of respectful care.

Abstract Background Rejection is a highly stressful experience and individuals tend to avoid it whenever possible. In intimate relationships, experiences of rejection can shape the interaction dynamics between partners. Highly rejection sensitive people fear that their romantic partner will reject them and they overreact to any ambiguous cues that might indicate rejection. Furthermore, because they focus on the threat of rejection, they may have difficulty disengaging from rejection-related emotions, persevere in a rejection-focused state and have a reduced capacity to regulate their emotions. The prolonged experience of strong negative emotions, together with maladaptive attempts to respond to rejection, may undermine key relationship maintenance processes that contribute to relationship functioning and lead to negative reciprocity in interactions. The goal of the present study was to shed light on how individuals experience rejection-related emotions and determine whether, following perceptions of negative interactions, rejection sensitivity was associated with stronger negative responses and less efficient downregulation of negative emotions. In addition, we examined whether dyadic patterns of rejection sensitivity were associated with negative emotion dynamics following perceptions of negative interactions. Methods The participants (N = 298) were couples experiencing the transition to parenthood. A multilevel modelling approach was used to assess the associations between rejection sensitivity, perceptions of negative interactions and emotional states. The analyses included repeated daily reports for both rejection and emotions. Results The results suggest that rejection sensitive individuals do not report higher negative emotions when they perceive negative interactions. Moreover, rejection sensitive men and women did not remain longer in a negative emotional state after they perceived negative interactions with their partner. Finally, when both men and women partners reported higher levels of rejection sensitivity, neither reported having higher negative emotions after experiencing negative interaction perceptions. Conclusions Our findings provide further insights into emotional dynamics and rejection sensitivity in romantic relationships. Our results do not provide evidence for a link between rejection sensitivity and higher negative emotions or slower recovery after reports of negative interactions. If individuals suppress their emotions, they may not benefit from regulation with their partner and instead may protect themselves over their relationships. However, in this context, rejection sensitivity might also not constitute a strong predictor of daily emotion fluctuations, but other variables– such as relationship satisfaction – might. Future research may investigate emotional responses in a sample with higher levels of rejection sensitivity and use more diverse measures of perceptions of negative interactions.

Objective: To determine the prevalence and measure the perceptions of women regarding causes, emotional feelings, and emotional support following a miscarriage. Study Design: Descriptive cross-sectional. Place and Duration of the Study: The study was conducted in the eastern province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 15th May 2023 to 30th August 2023. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among women living in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. A self-administered Arabic questionnaire was sent to the eastern population using Social Media platforms. Data was analyzed in Software Sciences (SPSS) version 26. Results:A total of 402 women responded, and 32.3% (130) were aged between 26 and 35 years. 57% (229) had a history of miscarriage and 26.2% (60) encountered recurrent miscarriages. Of the miscarried pregnancies 53.7% (216) were planned pregnancies. Approximately 78.4% (78) of women received medical care and (176) reported a miscarriage less than 7 weeks of pregnancy, The common perceived causes of miscarriage were spiritual 89.1% (358) and lifting heavy objects 60.3% (242). Almost 70.7% (284) had average emotional support after miscarriage, 16.2% (65) had high, and only 13.1% (52) had low emotional support received. Background: Improving the understanding of the post-discharge experiences of family members after their loved ones leave the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is essential for developing effective follow-up strategies. These strategies are crucial for mitigating potential negative outcomes for both patients and their families. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of family members after the discharge of their loved ones from the ICU. Methods: In September 2023, we conducted a systematic search of qualitative studies across the following databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to guide this review. Results: Eight articles met the inclusion criteria. Four themes were identified following evidence synthesis: (1) grappling with a weighty burden; (2) recognizing and confronting adversities along the way; (3) seeking support beyond one’s own resources; and (4) addressing comprehensive care requirements. Conclusions: Family members face significant psychological and physical challenges while caring for their loved ones recovering from an ICU stay. Adequate formal and informal help is imperative to provide support both during hospitalization and after discharge. A refined understanding of the distinct requirements and experiences of family members can serve as a strategic framework for informing educational interventions and follow-up programs during the transition from hospital settings to community-based care. Background: To start perinatal death auditing, doctors should have good knowledge about it. Objectives: To know the awareness and perceptions of doctors about different aspects of perinatal death auditing like 1) different types of contributors; 2) high-risk approach; 3) consequences; 4) documentary requirements; and 5) existing system of mortality meeting/child death reviews. Methodology: The perinatal death auditing project was implemented in two districts of Karnataka state. As a part of the pre-intervention survey, awareness and perceptions of doctors and a few health care administrators were explored. They were requested to participate in the study. Those who consented were approached in their hospitals and interviewed. Trained medical social workers conducted the interviews. Awareness was scored from 0 to 3 with 0 being no knowledge and 3 being good knowledge. Perceptions were scored from 0 to 3 with 0 being no negative perceptions and 3 being fear of legal consequences. The responses were documented, scored, and described. Results: Though 22 doctors were eligible, only 16 consented to participate in the study. Knowledge of doctors about different contributors was inadequate. They were apprehensive about legal consequences. They knew that documentation could protect them and be useful in a court of law. They were not clear about the conduct of mortality meeting/existing system of child death reviews. Conclusion: Knowledge was inadequate. They were apprehensive about legal consequences. Training of doctors and allaying apprehensions are required for starting perinatal death auditing.

While a significant body of academic work has been compiled on the transformation of planning law since the end of apartheid, far less has been produced on the perceptions of practising planners of these new laws, and their impacts on the planning profession’s stated objective of contributing to the creation of quality human settlements. This article seeks to assist in filling this gap in the field by reporting on a study into the perceptions of practising planners in the Western Cape in this regard. The study involves research into the views of professional planners on planning laws applied during and post-apartheid and the impact of these laws on human settlement planning and development. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 25 professional planners employed in the public and private sectors. The data sample, limited to the Western Cape province, was regarded as a starting point for further research on the perception of planners in these regards in the remaining eight provinces in the country. The key findings of this study are that planners by and large welcome the new planning legislation and view it as an improvement on the old. The challenges being experienced are mainly related to the institutional and financial landscape in which the law plays out rather than the law itself, notably lengthy planning processes; a focus on meeting housing-delivery targets at the cost of other equally important settlement development objectives; capacity, and budget constraints.

Abstract Uganda's lactating mothers are vulnerable to deficiencies of vitamin A and iron because they consume plant‐based conventional foods such as white‐fleshed sweet potato (WFSP) and non‐iron biofortified common bean (NIBCB) that are low in provitamin A (PVA) and iron, respectively. A PVA carotenoid–iron‐rich dish was prepared from a combination of orange‐fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) and iron‐biofortified common bean (IBCB). This study evaluated the perceptions and sensory acceptability of OFSP+IBCB (test food) against WFSP+NIBCB (control food) among lactating mothers in rural Uganda. A total of 94 lactating mothers participated in the study. The sensory attributes (taste, color, aroma, texture, and general acceptability) of test and control foods were rated using a five‐point facial hedonic scale (1 = dislike very much, 2 = dislike, 3 = neutral, 4 = like 5 = like very much). An attribute was acceptable if the participant scored from like to like very much. Focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted to assess participant perceptions about their future consumption of OFSP+IBCB. The chi‐square test was used to detect the proportion difference for each sensory attribute between OFSP+IBCB and WFSP+NIBCB, while FGD data were analyzed by thematic analysis. Taste, color, and aroma were acceptable to the mothers and not significantly different between OFSP+IBCB and WFSP+NIBCB (p > .05). Participants had positive perceptions of the taste, aroma, and color of the OFSP+IBCB and negative perceptions about the soft texture of OFSP. The lactating mothers had positive perceptions of consuming OFSP+IBCB provided they were accessible, affordable, and feasible to prepare.

The present study investigates the perceptions and practices of a group of university students and instructors at an English Medium university in Northern Cyprus. The study examines the relationship between attitudes and perceptions towards English Medium Instruction (EMI) and English as an Academic lingua franca (ELFA). The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, incorporating a survey distributed among 200 students and interviews conducted with 4 students and 6 instructors. The survey results are analyzed with SPSS 23 to provide descriptive statistical analysis, correlation, and regression analysis. The interview data undergoes thematic analysis to uncover patterns and provide qualitative insights. The study indicates differing perceptions and attitudes between students and instructors. Instructors tend to perceive students’ attitudes towards EMI/ELFA as negative, while students themselves exhibit positive attitudes toward these instructional methods. Additionally, the study sheds light on the significant challenges faced by both students and instructors, including issues related to low language proficiency, self-confidence, and comprehension problems within the EMI context. The research also highlights the diverse strategies employed by students to overcome these challenges. The findings have potential implications for other similar EMI contexts.

Introduction: Plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery (PRAS) is a significant yet often overlooked specialty in medical school curricula. The impact of social media and unregulated information sources can distort the perceptions of medical specialties, including PRAS, leading to a decline in student interest, inappropriate referrals and strain on healthcare services. This systematic review aimed to understand the perceptions of medical students towards PRAS, identify influencing factors and explore strategies to address these influences. Methods: The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Four databases were searched, and the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Data from 17 relevant studies were analysed in Microsoft Excel using descriptive statistics. The risk of bias was assessed using a modified Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results: Medical students generally held positive perceptions about PRAS, particularly regarding career opportunities, specialised skills and the nature of the specialty. However, their awareness of the full scope of plastic surgery is limited, with a focus on cosmetic and aesthetic procedures. Social media and the internet significantly influenced the students' perceptions, whereas personal experiences had a minor impact. Education and training in plastic surgery positively affected the students' perceptions. Nevertheless, there is a need for improved representation of PRAS in medical school curricula and promotion of accurate information through reliable sources. Conclusion: Students exhibited a favourable attitude towards plastic surgery, but their knowledge of the specialty can be enhanced. Strengthening PRAS teaching in medical schools and ensuring accurate information dissemination can foster a deeper understanding and interest in this field. Large-scale studies with standardised protocols should be conducted in different countries to gain comprehensive insights tailored to specific educational contexts.

Objective: This study investigated the preferences and perception of the participants regarding patient services in Emergency Department (ED). Methods: A vast comprehensive survey, targeting a sample size of 597 participants in the Jeddah region, was conducted. The study aimed to understand the appeal and necessity of various features ranging from amenities in the waiting area, specialist care, medical staff professionalism, infrastructural modifications, and procedural changes in the ER departments. Results: A substantial number agreed on a free coffee/tea service (80%), free Wi-Fi (92.1%), long comfortable seats (84.9%), and a mobile charging station (92%). Interestingly, patients preferred health information on TV (52.5%). Understanding the need for additional amenities, 72% supported the idea of a dedicated play area for children. Almost 73.8% responded in favor of a valet parking service, and 69.9% recognized the importance of personal care services provided by medical staff and nurses. The survey further showed that the presence of a device indicating approximate waiting time was a desired feature (93%). Notably, the qualifications of the emergency physician mattered for 71.7% of participants. Concerning medication delivery, 70.2% of participants preferred receiving them at their location in the emergency department. Further, 71.1% preferred to have healthy snacks on waiting area, and about 98.2% needed toilets to be cleaned frequently and scented. Conclusion: This comprehensive survey indicated a significant inclination towards patient-centric modifications in the EDs. Patients valued informational, infrastructural, and service-oriented features, emphasizing the need for a personalized, comfortable, and informed experience. [SJEMed 2024; 5(1.000): 010-014]

Unlike the conservation of wild plants and animals, which is a global policy issue, the conservation of locally cultivated plant varieties and indigenous breeds of farm animals is largely dependent on the farmers' choice to exploit them. This choice is subsequently influenced by consumer perceptions. As various local genetic resources of local plant varieties and farm animal breeds are of low productivity, they are not preferred by farmers and are therefore at risk of extinction. Consumer perceptions of food products originating from local genetic resources play a crucial role in the conservation of agrobiodiversity and sustainability of the primary sector, particularly in rural areas where short food supply chains can be more easily developed. The present study investigated consumer knowledge and opinions regarding products from local indigenous genetic resources in a rural area of particular agricultural importance: Western Macedonia, Greece. According to the findings, consumers have positive perceptions concerning local plant varieties and indigenous farm animal breeds, indicating their willingness to pay, but highlighting the requirement for reliable labeling. Interestingly, although Greece has a great diversity of indigenous farm animals, the public in the research area is only familiar with local plant varieties. Factors such as age, income and education level show a positive correlation with awareness for sustainability and conservation of local genetic resources.

Introduction In Thailand, school smoke-free policies initially targeted cigarette smoking but now extend to include electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). Yet, the impact of this expansion on curbing e-cigarette use in schools is uncertain. This study seeks to explore how e-cigarette control policies and educational initiatives in Thai secondary schools influence students' legal knowledge, perception of harm, current e-cigarette use, and susceptibility to future use. Methods This cross-sectional survey was conducted in four regions of Thailand between May and August 2023, involving 6147 students selected through multistage sampling. Data collection utilized a self-reported online questionnaire in Thai, developed using Google Forms. For continuous outcomes, multiple linear regression models assessed relationships between school e-cigarette policy perceptions, covariates, knowledge of e-cigarette laws, and harm perception. Multiple logistic regression models analyzed the association between policy perceptions, covariates, and categorical outcomes: current e-cigarette use and susceptibility. Introduction Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have emerged as a new paradigm in nicotine delivery systems. Although they are marketed as safer alternatives to tobacco, public perceptions of their safety and utility vary widely. This study aims to understand the percentage of use, factors associated, perceptions, and attitudes about e-cigarettes among Ecuadorian adults. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among the Ecuadorian population aged 18–65 years through a convenience sample, using a structured online questionnaire designed to collect responses from voluntary participants over three months, from February to April 2023. The questionnaire assessed the respondents’ attitudes and perceptions towards e-cigarettes. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, and adjusted logistic regression analyses to identify factors associated with e-cigarette use. Results Out of a total of 3047 Ecuadorian adults, the percentage of e-cigarette ever use was 27.9% (n=850), with 19.4% being current users and 8.5% former users. Abstract Background Improving shared decision-making using a treat-to-target approach, including the use of clinical outcome measures, is important to providing high quality care for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We developed an Electronic Health Record (EHR) integrated, patient-facing sidecar dashboard application that displays RA outcomes, medications, and lab results for use during clinical visits (“RA PRO dashboard”). The purpose of this study was to assess clinician perceptions and experiences using the dashboard in a university rheumatology clinic. Methods We conducted focus group (FG) discussions with clinicians who had access to the dashboard as part of a randomized, stepped-wedge pragmatic trial. FGs explored clinician perceptions towards the usability, acceptability, and usefulness of the dashboard. FG data were analyzed thematically using deductive and inductive techniques; generated themes were categorized into the domains of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Results 3 FG discussions were conducted with a total of 13 clinicians. Overall, clinicians were enthusiastic about the dashboard and expressed the usefulness of visualizing RA outcome trajectories in a graphical format for motivating patients, enhancing patient understanding of their RA outcomes, and improving communication about medications. Major themes that emerged from the FG analysis as barriers to using the dashboard included inconsistent collection of RA outcomes leading to sparse data in the dashboard and concerns about explaining RA outcomes, especially to patients with fibromyalgia. Other challenges included time constraints and technical difficulties refreshing the dashboard to display real-time data. Methods for integrating the dashboard into the visit varied: some clinicians used the dashboard at the beginning of the visit as they documented RA outcomes; others used it at the end to justify changes to therapy; and a few shared it only with stable patients. Conclusions The study provides valuable insights into clinicians’ perceptions and experiences with the RA PRO dashboard. The dashboard showed promise in enhancing patient-clinician communication, shared decision-making, and overall acceptance among clinicians. Addressing challenges related to data collection, education, and tailoring dashboard use to specific patient populations will be crucial for maximizing its potential impact on RA care. Further research and ongoing improvements in dashboard design and implementation are warranted to ensure its successful integration into routine clinical practice.

Information and digital technologies have revolutionized research methodologies for measuring people’s perceptions of built environments. Vast amounts of urban data can now be collected, providing more accurate and intuitive presentation and analysis tools. This enhances the research on the built environment from a human-centered perspective. In this paper, with the help of the CiteSpace knowledge map analysis tool, manual deep intervention was combined with clustering and stratified sampling of literature information to identify hot topics and research trends. The results demonstrate that there are two new perspectives. The first is the up-bottom urban/group perspective, specifically a holistic study of group perceptions by large-scale data, represented by big data, with technologies such as artificial intelligence. The second is the bottom-up humanistic/individual perspective, which accurately examines individual perceptions through physiological data based on ergonomics techniques, psychological, and other small-scale data. Furthermore, these two perspectives are interconnected, indicating a cross-trend in both directions. By bridging the gap between subjective perception and the real-world environment, integrating multi-source data offers a more precise and efficient foundation for thoroughly evaluating the built environment, which would help us better understand the built environment and satisfy the users’ demands in the research and practice of urban design.

Many EFL learners believe writing is a hard skill to master. Project-based learning is argued to be an effective solution to the problem. This study is aimed to look at the effect of Project-based learning (PJBL) on English writing skill for Indonesian EFL learners and their perceptions of PJBL. A mixed-method approach was implemented in this study. A pair sample t-test was used in analyzing the quantitative data of the written test while the descriptive-qualitative technique was applied in analyzing the data of the interview. Participants are thirty-nine tertiary students from Universitas Tidar. From the study, Indonesian EFL learners believe project-based learning influenced their writing skill in many ways. The result of this study is that there was a significant difference in project-based learning on English writing skill in pre and post-test for EFL learners which favor the improvement in grammar, vocabulary, organization, and content writing of the text. Project-based learning enhances the learners in linguistics aspects such as vocabulary knowledge, grammatical conventions, and punctuation. Besides, it also enhanced the learners' critical and creative thinking in the process of writing. In addition, project-based learning also motivated the learners to write as they were habituated to the independent learning situations that demand them to follow through all the processes accordingly: not to be left behind. Further studies are suggested to gain a deeper and broader comprehension of project-based learning's effect on student's writing skill.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted individuals, society, and healthcare organisations worldwide. Recent international research suggests that concerns, needs, and experiences of healthcare workers (HCWs) have evolved throughout the pandemic. This longitudinal qualitative study explored the evolving views and experiences of Victorian healthcare workers (HCWs) and organisational key personnel during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods We recruited participants from the Coronavirus in Victorian Health and Aged care workers (COVIC-HA) study cohort. We conducted two rounds of semi-structured interviews with HCWs and organisational key personnel from three different healthcare settings (hospital, aged care and primary care) in Victoria, Australia, in May-July 2021 and May-July 2022. Data were analysed thematically using trajectory and recurrent cross-sectional approaches, guided by a temporal change framework. Results Twelve HCWs and five key personnel from various professional roles participated in interviews at both timepoints. Expected themes derived from mid-2021 interviews (navigating uncertainty, maintaining service delivery, and addressing staff needs) evolved over time. Concerns shifted from personal health and safety to workforce pressures, contributing to HCW burnout and fatigue and ongoing mental health support needs. New themes emerged from mid-2022 interviews, including managing ongoing COVID-19 impacts and supporting the healthcare workforce into the future. Clear and consistent communication, stable guidelines and forward-looking organisational responses were considered crucial. Conclusions Our longitudinal qualitative study highlighted the evolving impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HCWs’ perceptions, health and wellbeing and uncovered long-term sector vulnerabilities. Analysing HCW experiences and key personnel insights over time and across different pandemic phases provided crucial insights for policymakers to protect the healthcare workforce. Findings emphasise the need for proactive strategies that prioritise HCWs’ wellbeing and workforce sustainability. Policy makers must invest in HCW health and wellbeing initiatives alongside healthcare system improvements to ensure resilience and capacity to meet future challenges. Trial registration This study was approved through the Victorian Streamlined Ethical Review Process (SERP: Project Number 68,086) and registered with ANZCTR (ACTRN12621000533897) on 6 May 2021.

Abstract This study investigated the development of spatiotemporal perceptual interactions in 5-to-7 years old children. Participants reproduced the temporal and spatial interval between sequentially presented visual stimuli. The time and spacing between stimuli were experimentally manipulated. In addition, cognitive capacities were assessed using neuropsychological tests. Results revealed that starting at 5 years old, children exhibited spatial biases in their time estimations and temporal biases in their spatial estimations, pointing at space–time interference. In line with developmental improvement of temporal and spatial abilities, these spatiotemporal biases decreased with age. Importantly, short-term memory capacity was a predictor of space–time interference pointing to shared cognitive mechanisms between time and space processing. Our results support the symmetrical hypothesis that proposes a common neurocognitive mechanism for processing time and space.

Abstract Background The current applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine continue to attract the attention of medical students. This study aimed to identify undergraduate medical students’ attitudes toward AI in medicine, explore present AI-related training opportunities, investigate the need for AI inclusion in medical curricula, and determine preferred methods for teaching AI curricula. Methods This study uses a mixed-method cross-sectional design, including a quantitative study and a qualitative study, targeting Palestinian undergraduate medical students in the academic year 2022–2023. In the quantitative part, we recruited a convenience sample of undergraduate medical students from universities in Palestine from June 15, 2022, to May 30, 2023. We collected data by using an online, well-structured, and self-administered questionnaire with 49 items. In the qualitative part, 15 undergraduate medical students were interviewed by trained researchers. Descriptive statistics and an inductive content analysis approach were used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. Results From a total of 371 invitations sent, 362 responses were received (response rate = 97.5%), and 349 were included in the analysis. The mean age of participants was 20.38 ± 1.97, with 40.11% (140) in their second year of medical school. Most participants (268, 76.79%) did not receive formal education on AI before or during medical study. About two-thirds of students strongly agreed or agreed that AI would become common in the future (67.9%, 237) and would revolutionize medical fields (68.7%, 240). Participants stated that they had not previously acquired training in the use of AI in medicine during formal medical education (260, 74.5%), confirming a dire need to include AI training in medical curricula (247, 70.8%). Most participants (264, 75.7%) think that learning opportunities for AI in medicine have not been adequate; therefore, it is very important to study more about employing AI in medicine (228, 65.3%). Teachers have positive perceptions about the implementation of the Minimum Competency Assessment (MCA) and reading literacy. However, mathematics teachers also need to have a perception of students' numeracy skills that are assessed using the MCA instrument. Teachers experience various challenges and difficulties in improving learning to strengthen numeracy. This study aims to describe teachers' perceptions of students' numeracy competencies measured using MCA and to identify efforts made by teachers to strengthen students' numeracy competencies. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The results of this study indicate that teachers' perceptions of students' numeracy competence measured using the MCA instrument are positive (agree) so that teachers can make appropriate efforts in improving the quality of learning and strengthening numeracy. The efforts that teachers can make are looking for information on achievement results, reading report card data, identifying the root of the problem, and fixing the problem. Positive teacher perceptions encourage teachers to make appropriate efforts in strengthening students' numeracy competencies and support schools to develop data-based programs. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa persepsi guru tentang kompetensi numerasi siswa yang diukur menggunakan instrumen MCA adalah positif (setuju) sehingga guru dapat melakukan upaya yang tepat dalam memperbaiki kualitas pembelajaran dan melakukan penguatan numerasi. Adapun upaya yang guru dapat lakukan adalah mencari informasi hasil capaian, membaca data rapor pendidikan, mengidentifikasi akar permasalahan, dan membenahi masalah. Persepsi guru yang positif mendorong guru agar dapat melakukan upaya yang tepat dalam menguatkan kompetensi numerasi siswa dan mendukung sekolah menyusun program berdasarkan data.

Abstract Background Violence against women (VAW) is a significant public health problem. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the frequency and severity of VAW has escalated globally. Approximately one in four women in Nepal have been exposed to either physical, psychological, and/or sexual violence in their lifetime, with husbands or male partners being the perpetrators in most cases. VAW prevention has been under-researched in low- and middle-income countries, including Nepal. This study aims to explore the perspectives of local stakeholders, including healthcare providers and survivors of violence in Madhesh Province. The overarching goal is to provide insights for designing prevention and support programs that are acceptable to communities and cater to the needs of survivors. Methods An explorative qualitative study was conducted in Madhesh Province, southern Nepal. A total of 21 interviews, including 15 in-depth interviews (IDIs) with health care providers, three IDIs with women seeking general or maternal and child health services at health care centres, three key informant interviews with the local stakeholders working in the field of VAW, and one focus group discussion with violence survivors, were conducted in Nepali by trained field interviewers. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, translated into English, and analysed using content analysis. Results VAW, particularly physical violence, was a common experience in the study area. Sociocultural traditions such as dowry, child marriages and son preference were identifiable triggers for VAW, causing significant physical injuries and mental health problems, including suicide. Health care providers reported that violence survivors often hide their experiences of violence and do not seek any kind of help. Women feared that violence would increase in frequency and intensity if their perpetrators found out that they had disclosed their experiences of violence to health care providers. Local stakeholders emphasized the importance of engaging community leaders and garnering support from both women and men in interventions designed to reduce VAW and its impacts on mental health. Conclusions Participants reported that verbal and physical violence is often perceived as a normal part of women’s lives. Women should be made aware of available support services and empowered and supported to increase access and uptake of these services. Additionally, more individual-based counselling sessions that encourage women to escape violence and its mental health consequences while maintaining privacy and confidentiality are recommended.
