In this work, we explore the combustion mechanism of single micron-sized aluminum particles using a numerical model. The Burcat database and Catoire mechanism is considered as the thermodynamic data and the kinetic mechanism for our numerical model of aluminum combustion. Two independent experiments, including particle temperature profiles, ignition delay and burning time, are selected to evaluate the performance of the numerical model. The model shows great agreement for all considered properties. A parametric study is further conducted to identify the effect of involved physical parameters on the combustion process. The diffusion coefficient (D) of oxidizers and the activation energy of surface kinetics (Esurf) and evaporation coefficient (α) of aluminum impact the particle temperature the most. Burning time is most sensitive to the activation energy of surface kinetics (Esurf). The optical measurement in a solid propellant combustion indicates that the contact angle of the oxide cap on Al particle is between 10° and 20°. It is found that the selection of contact angle of the oxide cap significantly impacts the prediction of combustion time and residual of active aluminum. The current work highlights the importance of physical properties on the prediction of Al combustion, suggesting that more detailed evaluation from experiments and theory is encouraged.

Abstract Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are considered promising carriers for large-scale H2 storage and transportation, among which the toluene-methylcyclohexane cycle has attracted great attention from industry and academia because of the low cost and its compatibility with the current infrastructure facility for the transportation of chemicals. The large-scale deployment of the H2 storage/transportation plants based on the toluene-methylcyclohexane cycle relies on the use of high-performance catalysts, especially for the H2 release process through the dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane. In this work, we have developed a highly efficient catalyst for MCH dehydrogenation reaction by incorporating subnanometer PtFe clusters with precisely controlled composition and location within a rigid zeolite matrix. The resultant zeolite-encapsulated PtFe clusters exhibit the up-to-date highest reaction rate for dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane to toluene, very high chemoselectivity to toluene (enabling the production of H2 with purity >99.9%), remarkably high stability (>2000 h) and regenerability over consecutive reaction-regeneration cycles.

Abstract A fundamental understanding of the active sites in working catalysts can guide the rational design of new catalysts with improved performances. In this work, we have followed the evolution of homogeneous and heterogeneous Pd catalysts under the reaction conditions for aerobic oxidative coupling of toluene for the production of 4,4′-bitolyl. We have found that subnanometer Pd clusters made with a few Pd atoms are the working active sites in both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic systems. Moreover, water can promote the activity of Pd clusters by nearly one-order magnitude for oxidative coupling reaction by facilitating the activation of O2. These new insights lead to the preparation of a catalyst made with Pd clusters supported on a two-dimensional zeolite, which expands the scope of the oxidative coupling of aromatics to larger substrates.

Rural tourism is a powerful way to revitalize the countryside, and its spatial pattern is crucial for sustainable development. This paper analyzes the spatial distribution of rural tourism characteristic villages in Henan Province by taking 723 villages as the research object and using the nearest neighbor index, kernel density analysis, and spatial autocorrelation. It investigates the influencing factors utilizing the optimal parameters-based geographical detector (OPGD) model. The results show that, firstly, the overall spatial distribution of the rural tourism characteristic villages in Henan Province is characterized by aggregation and unbalanced distribution, and the overall spatial distribution density demonstrates the aggregation characteristics of “four cores and one belt”. Secondly, the rural tourism characteristic villages can be divided into four primary categories, agricultural industry, rural culture, and featured villages and towns. The spatial distributions of the four main categories are all clustered. Thirdly, the primary factors affecting the differences in the spatial distribution of the rural tourism characteristic villages are the topographic features, economic development level, tourism market potential, traffic capacity, and relevant policies, among which the critical factor is the number of A-class scenic spots in the tourism market potential. To promote the optimisation of the spatial pattern of rural tourism, it is necessary to strengthen resource integration. Furthermore, it is important to conduct in-depth exploration of more factors in order to provide comprehensive guidance for the sustainable development of rural tourism.

In the search of alternative resources to make commodity chemicals and transportation fuels for a low carbon future, lignocellulosic biomass with over 180-billion-ton annual production rate has been identified as a promising feedstock. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art catalytic transformation of lignocellulosic biomass into value-added chemicals and fuels. Following a brief introduction on the structure, major resources and pretreatment methods of lignocellulosic biomass, the catalytic conversion of three main components, i.e., cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, into various compounds are comprehensively discussed. Either in separate steps or in one-pot, cellulose and hemicellulose are hydrolyzed into sugars and upgraded into oxygen-containing chemicals such as 5-HMF, furfural, polyols, and organic acids, or even nitrogen-containing chemicals such as amino acids. On the other hand, lignin is first depolymerized into phenols, catechols, guaiacols, aldehydes and ketones, and then further transformed into hydrocarbon fuels, bioplastic precursors and bioactive compounds. The review then introduces the transformations of whole biomass via catalytic gasification, catalytic pyrolysis, as well as emerging strategies. Finally, opportunities, challenges and prospective of woody biomass valorization are highlighted.

Hydrogels are attractive for the treatment of waste water, but their mechanical properties are typically reduced when underwater. Here, a synthesis strategy is reported for a graphene oxide-coated hydrogel which can catalyze organic dye degradation in water over multiple cycles.

A simple and efficient flow field visualization method (based on shadow imaging) was applied in a direct-connect test to explore the influence of the momentum flux ratio and the jet angle on the formation and evolution of nitrogen jets in supersonic combustion chambers. The test setup adopts a rectangular flow passage to simulate a flight condition with Mach number of 6 and altitude of 25 km. The experimental results showed that (a) the flow field visualization method adopted in this paper can clearly register the formation and evolution of the shock wave structure in the flow field and the windward shear vortex on the jet surface. (b) The evolution process of the windward shear vortex is significantly affected by the jet angle. In particular, the stretching position of the windward shear vortex changed when the jet angle was obtuse. (c) The bow shocks showed local distortion due to the periodic generation of large-scale shear vortexes. (d) Under the working conditions of the test, the largest instability of the flow field was found for a jet angle of 120°. This work provides, on one hand, the experimental basis for clarifying the formation and evolution mechanism of transverse gas jets, and on the other, valuable data that can be used to validate numerical simulations.

In this paper, a modular solid scramjet combustor with multicavity was proposed. The influence of multicavity shape on the performance of solid scramjet was investigated by the direct-connected tests. The experiments simulated a flight Mach 5.5 at 25 km. The boron-based fuel-rich propellant was used. The microstructure of combustion products was analyzed by SEM. The experimental results show that the fuel-rich mixture produced by the gas generator would ignite rapidly in the solid scramjet combustor. The combustion process showed a typical characteristic of establishment-development-maintenance-attenuation. Compared to the flame-holding cavity, the other shapes of cavities, e.g., narrow and lobe, can improve mixing and combustion. In our experiment, the combustion efficiency increased from 0.41 to 0.48, and the total pressure recovery was 0.36. In summary, the proposed solid scramjet combustor can effectively solve the ignition delay problem of the fuel-rich mixture, and the narrow/lobe cavity shows the ability to improve the mixing and combustion of the fuel-rich mixture.

In this study, a CO2 laser ignition experimental system was built to study the ignition process and characteristics of the Nitrate Ester Plasticized Polyether (NEPE) propellant. The effect of the energy density, ingredients, and the grain size distribution of the propellant on the ignition process was investigated using a CO2 laser igniter, a high-speed camera, and a tungsten-rhenium thermocouple. Four types of NEPE propellants were tested under different laser heat fluxes, and the ignition delay time, the ignition temperature, and the ignition energy were obtained. Experimental results show that the ignition process of the NEPE propellant can be divided into three stages, namely the first-gasification stage, the first-flame stage, and the ignition delay stage. When the energy density is lower than the ignition energy threshold, the ignition process cannot be achieved even under continuous energy loading. The increase of the energy density can lead to the decrease of the ignition delay time but has little effect on the ignition temperature. The ingredients and grain size distribution have great effects on both the ignition delay time and the ignition temperature. The grain size effect of aluminum is the largest compared with that of Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), while the grain size effect of AP is larger than that of HMX.

The solid scramjet has become one of the most promising engine types. In this paper, we report the first direct-connect test of a solid scramjet with symmetrical structure, carried out using boron-based fuel-rich solid propellant as fuel. During the test, which simulated a flight environment at Mach 5.6 and 25 km, the performance of the solid scramjet was obtained by measuring the pressure, thrust, and mass flow. The results show that, due to the change in the combustion area of the propellant and the deposition of the throat in the gas generator during the test, the equivalence ratio gradually increased from 0.54 to 0.63. In a solid scramjet, it is possible to obtain a symmetrical distribution of the flow field within the combustor. Moreover, in a multi-cavity combustor, the combustion state expands from the cavity to the center of the flow channel. The performance of the solid scramjet increased during the test, reaching a combustion efficiency of about 42%, a total pressure recovery coefficient of 0.35, and a thrust gain specific impulse of about 418 s. The solid scramjet with symmetrical structure is feasible. The cavity configuration adopted in this paper can reduce the ignition delay time of fuel-rich gas and improve the combustion efficiency of gas-phase combustible components. The shock trains in the isolator are conducive to the recovery of the total pressure. The performance of the solid scramjet is limited by the low combustion efficiency of the particles.

In this study, a quasi-steady combustion model of an aluminum particle is established, which is more accurate to simulate the physical combustion process. Detailed gas-phase reaction mechanism and surface reaction mechanism are considered. Moreover, the particle temperature is not constant in this work, which is calculated in different combustion stages. The judgement standard of each combustion stage is from observational data in the experiment and the simulation results of combustion durations of each stage, and distribution of ambient temperature and gas-phase species profiles are in good agreement with experimental results. The calculation results show that in the first stage, burning rate of the particle is the fastest, and in the second stage, particle temperature can drop to more than 100 K below the boiling point for the large particles, which is slightly below the boiling point for small ones. As the combustion stage changes, Da number is going to keep going down, which will lead to the transition of combustion method from diffusion-limited control to kinetic-limited control for an aluminum particle.
